5 panel (shaker) interior door and style of home.....
Comments (2)We also love that door style. It was our original choice, but then decided to simplify because we are trying to build aging in place. With that, we're thinking of every possible place that needs cleaning, so going with a single panel to reduce the little ridges that collect dust. All that being said, I was watching Mad Men one night and one of the doors in a residence was multi panels. I then starting noticing these doors everywhere. My conclusion: they transcend a specific style and label. I think your hardware is more important for the design statement you want to make....See More5 panel interior doors: mdf or mdf with poplar
Comments (4)"I would think the solid MDF MIGHT be more stable over time due to it being 100% frabricated material." Doors and furniture are made using panels to reduce the effects of the wood expanding and shrinking. Each panel has clearance in the grooves holding it to allow the panel to move separately without altering the size of the door. MDF is only moderately stable, and changes size in ALL directions (unlike solid wood that only changes in two of three axis). "The poplar one might be a little heavier feeling, which you might like. I know I like a heavier feeling door. They usually close nicer as well. (or slam really hard when angry): Poplar is far lighter than any MDF. It is one of the softest (besides balsa) and lightest of the hardwoods. It excels at holding paint and crisp details. MDF doors solid or MDF panels) are painfully heavy. Enough that you need to make sure you use longer screws on their hinges (especially the top hinge) and three hinges are often required even on interior doors made from/with MDF....See MoreInterior Doors - 5 panel w/mortise lockset
Comments (15)just so I understand(and I make sure that there wasn't some crazy change in mortise locks between 1889 and 1922)...when you turn the doorknob, it just spins, but the latch-a-ma-bob doesn't go back into the door? If you take the doorknob off the spindle, you have a square spindle, and if you turn that, your latch-a-ma-bob goes back into the door? If the case is that you can turn the spindle and the latch moves, then the problem (I would think) is a contact problem between the doorknob and the spindle...at which point, you would need to inspect the spindle, the screws, and the doorknobs, all of which are pretty easy and cheap to replace (and fairly universal in size). *MY* problem is one piece of metal that breaks in the mortise itself, a tiny piece of spring steel. If I got industrious I could re-engineer it and fix them all--all my upstairs ones but one are broken. A previous owner went around this by putting barrel latches or hooks and eyes on the insides of the doors (which means the doors lock too, which is nice), so I haven't really worried about it. The doorknobs and spindles are fine, but the guts don't turn any more....See Moresalvage yards for building materials
Comments (22)As my partner likes to remind me, those treasures have to be moved, cleaned, stored, organized and reorganized, and usually modified. In our case, they often end up getting moved multiple times before installed, sold or donated. The perfect item is usually not available at the perfect time or place and if it is, there is probably a pricetag that reflects the sellers opinion of that perfection. One of my weaknesses is vintage light fixtures. I have a couple of gorgeous ones hanging in my garage that will have to be moved with me to hang in the new garage until the right location calls out for one of them. I love the unique items and figuring out where to use them, but the logistics of using the cheap finds ensures that very few actually end up to be true bargains. This bed is one of my favorite salvage pieces. Of course, it wasnt a bed until my partner and I invested many hours into assembling the parts. The headboard and footboard started life as newel posts and stair railings and the bed rails came from an oak fluorescent light fixture. We bought the stair railings and posts at a demo sale and removed them ourselves. We disassembled, trimmed, rearranged, and assembled a bed. The direct costs were under 200 dollars but when the hours are added up, this bed is priceless....See Moretulips33
