Computer shuts itself OFF!

I am still working on the problems with this new computer an HP with XP and Windows version 7. I can send it back, but if the problems aren't deadly serious and can be resolved I would rather fix them. So I hope someone has some advice for this problem?

When I leave the computer unattended for about 15 min to 1/2 hr it hibnernates but comes right back up when I touch the mouse - but-if I leave it for much longer, and hour or more it shuts itself off and won't reboot when touching the mouse. When I look at the button on the tower it is still lit up like it is on, but I have to hold it in until it shuts down and then reboot it. I hope I am explaining this so people can understand what I am trying to say?

On my old system when there was also what they called an 'improper shutdown' the computer would do a scan before booting up looking for errors on the C drive, and I am not getting that either.

Check in your Control Panel>Power Options
Look around and disable the Hibernation. You can also set the option to Never turn off for the Monitor and HDD.

If it's new and you can still send it back, then couldn't you get some tech support from them...or have they maybe not been able to help. I'd think they would only want you to send it back as a very last resort.

Check that the vent in the fuel cap is clear. If the cap does not have a vent then the fuel tank is vented with a hose and you need to check that the vent hose is clear.

Win32:Refroso, I don't like the looks of this and my abilities end here. It could be a false positive. But with the symptoms you have and some of the information I have found would feel much better if you go to a malware removal forum for more thorough scans and mostly an expert opinion. At this time I am going to supply a link where we send folks for Malware issues. Please follow the instructions at the link provided and post the required logs, it's important you post the logs. Thanks pamminger much appreciated. I will try that site also. Celticmoon we did clean all the dust out the first time the TV quit working. That helped for awhile but then it quit working again. Thanks for the info it is much appreciated.

I never use 'Hibernate', read too much about it in the past to be sure even today. So I set my monitor and hard drives to go off after 15 minutes of inactivity. Done that for years as I run 24/7 with no problems

I turned off Hibernate-thank you! I was gone for a couple of hours and my computer came right back up when I touched the mouse.

As for sending it back, I really don't want to go through unstalling everything-would have to pay someone to do that-then pack it up and return it, and then have to go looking for a new one because I am not ready to deal with Vista-when I can resolve these issues that I have.
Then I would have to pay again-to hook me back up again.
DH & I are not computer savvy and I have one of the wireless adapters in my computer which would need tranferring.

I have been emailing back & forth with HP Help and they do respond within an hour, it is just some of the things they tell me to do are beyond my understanding!

Mine does the same thing.

Gone 15 minutes, and the screen saver is on, so all I have to do is touch the mouse.

Gone longer than 15, the computer hibernates, so I have to touch one of the keys and click on the screen for the computer to come back on. No big deal!

I normally keep mine on 48, off 8 and on again, depending on use. I find the computer works better if it has a little rest every so often.

NewHomeBuilder -- it isn't that "the computer works better if it has a little rest every so often." It works better when it is rebooted every so often. You can keep it running 24/7 and just do a "restart" every couple of days.
