recs for gas range with rear high powered burner

I am seeking recs for a gas range with a the high powered burner in the rear for safety issues (have three kids 5 and under). Was most closely looking at Bosch and KitchenAid (budget is low $2,000, looking for stainless) but it seems the highest powers are in the front. Thanks in advance!

Personally I would suggest getting a range with ALL the burners the same.
FAR more useful and versatile.
For less than $2000 you are basically limited to really one range which is the NXR.

It has 4 excellent double tier burners that go up to 15K BTU and also down to a very VERY low simmer.
15K BTU is more than ample.

The overall power of the burner is not going to make that much of a difference as far as kids burning themselves.
and with double stack burners if you just want to simmer up front you can.

But in reality about the only actual "safe" range for what you are talking about is Induction.

I would also lay odds that if they do not listen to you and they touch that burner anyway I bet they wont do it again.

What everybody else said. You are over-thinking this. Our college educations do this to us. The DCS "specs" are for the least powerful rangehood that DCS recommend for use with that stove, as akchicago says. As Weissman and akchicago (and now me, too) say, it is not the number of burners you have going but what you are cooking that determines the rangehood setting. You run the hood at the speed that is needed for what you are cooking regardless of how many burners you are using at the time. If you are holding various kinds of melted chocolate in six 5" sauce pans with all six burners going at once --- and I've seen my neighbor do this with four burners when making the most outrageous chocolate truffles you can imagine --- there will be no need to even turn on the hood. Yeah, you would have all six burners going, but there will be neither much heat nor any vapors to dissipate. OTOH, if you are into gonzo searing where you have one single pan heated hot enough to melt lead . . . well, you will probably need to open windows, use a floor fan and run your rangehood on high even though there is only one burner going. So, we have a unanimous vote here that you are okay running the vent at whatever speed works best for what you are cooking. Feeling reassured?

I'll second what cooksnews said, but add a couple of additional comments. First, it seems to me that you've pretty much answered your own question. Second, the supposed difficulty of cleaning a sealed-burner stove is, it seems to me, a function of the cooktop surface and the depth of the burner wells. My old GE dual fuel, with its shallow burner wells and burner plates required a lot of attention and frequent applications of Barkeeper's Friend. My new pro-style NXR with its stainless cooktop surface and deep burner wells is much easier. Pull the burner grates, spritz with windex and wipe with a microfiber cloth. As for whether you would be "happier" with a 15k to 17k burner configuration than with the 22K-plus open burner Blue-Stars, ARs, or CCs, who knows? There are a really wide variety of reasons why some folks are passionate about high-powered open burners. Some want to use round bottomed woks and get closer to the "true taste of the wok" or something they feel is reminiscent of street-vendor pad-thai. Some feel that, without an open pro-style burner, they cannot get sufficient low temp burner evenness to make the exquisite sauces they make. Some of them need or want to be able to blast three or four shrimp in tiny pans heated to very high temps. Some of them feel their cooking style really benefits from the higher btu-hr power. Some are like car junkies for whom there can never be enough horsepower. Some of them need the high hp or btu to supprot elitist snobbery and feel superior to us peasants who tastes and skills are far less refined than their own. Some just like the look better. Some people will have a mix of some or all of the above reasons. Personally, for my cooking, I have absolutely no regrets or problems with having sealed 15K-btu-hr burners for what I cook. My NXR burners will heat my cast iron pans hot enough to burn off the seasoning if I choose to do that, although I could also do that with the 12K btu-hr burners on the old GE. Personally, I don't feel that a steak has to be seared at temps sufficient to melt lead. I have not owned a round-bottomed wok for a decade and do not feel bad because I do not have one. The NXR's low heat settings, like those on cooksnews' DCS, are plenty low enough for me to melt and hold chocolate in a small pan for hours. There is one difference I have observed between my stove and cooksnews' DCS. For high heat applications, the burners on my stove work better with pans larger than eight-inches in diameter. For example, boiling six quarts of pasta water will take me 22 minutes. Doing this with a 10-inch-diameter pot will bring the time down to less than 15 minutes. In a 13-inch diameter kettle, it takes less than 14 minutes. That said, I have no problem searing steaks or sauteing in 10 and 12 inch fry pans. For me, making blackened fish or chicken does not require more heat than I have available. Also, I certainly can and do use small pans. Boiling water for morning oatmeal takes 3 minutes in a 5-inch sauce pan. I can melt and hold chocolate for hours in that small pan, too. Frankly, I find cookware construction makes a bigger difference to evenness than the burner design for what and how I cook. Now, if I had one of the open burner stoves, maybe I could boil that pasta water in 12 minutes instead of 14 but that is not a big deal for me. But, again, whether you will be happy with a "lesser" stove is such a subjective judgment that, except for bragging rights, it will be hard to say how "happy" you will be.

Thanks, you all! I've been out researching an American as an alternative, to get away from the electronic control board (the piece that broke for the second time on our range, which has necessitated this purchase). rhome, the sears salesman said they're made by Electrolux. E'lux also makes frigidaire--I'm guessing they're somewhere in between the E'lux label and the Frigidaire? Although I like this better than the e'lux, actually. More "features", like the delightful bridge burner. Although the E'lux has an 18K burner. But hey. If you can take the grate off, like huango says, and wok directly over the burner, life is good. huango, the *one* thing you mention that surprises me is the slow preheating. That's kind of out of hand, 25 mins. for a frozen pizza (I'm assuming 425-450)? I make pizzas pretty often--we just keep our stone in the oven we use it so much (or *did* until it broke!). What would you think of an American range as compared to this? I'm not sure which top would be harder to clean--the Kenmore or the American, which is all stainless...

Which range can operate the burners during a power outage?

Most current models can be lit in a power outage but the only way to know on any particular one is to check the pdf of the user guide/owner's manual. Do a word search on a term like "outage" or "match." If you don't find those terms, then you've identified a model that cannot be lit in a power outage. Once in a while, IME, you may find a manual that forthrightly says it cannot be lit without power, but many manuals skip past that issue. Where you find the term in a pdf, read the passages and see if it says anything about lighting burners with a match or without power. As for gas ranges without self cleaning, it is pretty common at the lowest and highest ends of the market , but it is hard to know for any given model without checking the specs on vendor sites like Lowe's, AJ Madison, ABT, etc. I have to say that the "lights in an outage" question has been asked so often that you'd think some industrious appliance geek somewhere would have compiled a list of all current models that can be lit during a power outage. Add in the additional filter of having or not having high heat self cleaning and you'd have a pretty comprehensive reference. However, in the decades that I've been participating here, I have yet to find such a list. But maybe somebody here has compiled the list or knows where to find one and (hopeffully) will chime in. I suspect that will be unlikely because so many manufacturers change model numbers so often that it would be hard to maintain a current list, but you never know. Oh, one other thing; in previous threads on this questions, some folks have wanted to be able to light an oven without electrical power, not just the stove top burners. The answer to that is that nobody in the North American appliance market is currently selling any residential gas ranges with piiot lights or without thermostatic oven controls but some forum members have turned up a few stoves which have 9v battery back-ups for the oven and stove-top ignitors. I guess I'm inclined to agree with nunyabiz's second post: if a little kid is going to reach into a flame, or grab a pot or a pan off the burner while it's hot, you'll have a problem independent of your range choice or burner arrangement -- a 10k btu burner, 12, 15, 22, etc. -- 8 or 10k doesn't make it safe. Electric certainly doesn't make it safe, and it might make it harder for a kid to see that the stove is hot. Induction might make the top safe, but doesn't solve the hot pan or pot full of boiling water problem. Kids have to be taught to stay away from the top of the range until they are ready to learn to cook. And even then, they need to be taught to take proper care. Really. Just like not running into traffic or leaping head first down a stairway.

FWIW, we've got two nine year-old kids and one that's nearly 14. We've had gas ranges throughout their lives, without issue.

Thanks all. Great suggestion about getting all the burners the same. I was mostly looking at a kitchenAid that had very small BTU burners on the back and the one that you'd use for boiling on the front - didn't like that the only option for boiling was in the front. I probably sound over protective - my father spent a year in the hospital (age 3) because he over turned a pot of boiling water on himself.

Now I am looking at the Bosch Integra 700 series range or the the 5 burner cooktop (30 in). Also would love to look at the NXR. Thanks.

Welcome.
I looked at ranges for about a year prior to buying one and finally decided on the NXR.
I really wanted a stove with all the burners the same because it just makes more sense to me.
Having one tiny little "simmer burner" and one big high output burner and a couple in between just seemed ridiculous to me.

I also really checked into burner configurations (how they are positioned) and stoves like the NXR were far better.
You need enough space in between ALL burners to be able to use 2 large pots/pans one in front of the other.
I can use my 14" WOK up front and a 10" pot in the rear on one side 12" cast iron frying pan and a 12qt (about 10") pasta pot in the back on the other 2 burners and can use full blast 15,000BTUs on all 4 and then turn all 4 down to a wisp of a simmer.
I have a 14X23" steel griddle that usually keep on the right hand side covering those 2 burners because I use a griddle a lot.

Check out the NXR, for what you are looking for and for the price you are talking about I seriously doubt you will find anything else 1/2 as good.

We got ours for $1799.00 total price shipped to the door.

For the price there is nothing else that comes close.

Here is what ours looks like installed, this was the day we installed it. We are about to get our granite counter tops and back splash in the next couple of weeks. Will look much better then.
I highly suggest using a nice piece of stainless for the back splash behind the stove, works great, looks good and easy to clean.

Not shopping, just curious -- is there an option for continuous grates on the NXR?

Yes there is a center grate you can get.
I just don't see the need for one personally so never bought one.

Thanks so much. Looks great and great to know you can get continuous grates. I'll definitely check it out, sounds almost too good to be true. What have you found out about reliability?

And totally agree about stainless backsplash, I have one now (behind the 24 yr old KA cooktop that came with the house) and it is so easy to clean.

I can not really speak to reliability because I have only owned the range for about 4 months so far.
At this point we love it, no problems at all and don't see any signs of problems in the future.
If you look up "NXR Reviews/Complaints" etc you will find very VERY few complaints of any kind.

The only complaints I have seen are actually talking about the shipping damage and not really a problem with an undamaged stove. (A stove with broken/leaking gas lines, broken parts/welds, and chipped enamel on the inside, a door that doesn't close properly are all talking about shipping damage obviously).

The place we bought this said they have sold a couple dozen of them and never had a compliant or return.

I know the stove is made well, it is not cheaply put together at all, the shipping weight is around 350#, it is totally stainless on all sides, the grates are very heavy duty, the burners are excellent and the exact same ones used on Wolf stoves.
The hinges come from Italy and are very strong, the door is very heavy and well insulated.
The guy where we bought ours put the door down then stood on it with all his weight (about 190#)and it didn't even creak.

It has a nice infrared broiler that gets somewhere around 1600-1700 degrees.

The racks on the inside are very heavy duty.

One other thing to consider when concerned about children near it regardless of what powers it is how well the oven is insulated.
Our old oven that we replaced would have branded you for life if you touched it after it being on 450 degrees for 30 minutes or less.
This NXR I have had the oven on 450+ for well over 30 minutes and used the broiler and the oven door is barely warm to the touch.
There is a spot deep on the crevasse at the bottom of the door and above the kick plate at the very bottom of stove that if you stick your fingers all the way to the back of it it gets hot but thats about it.

For the price you wont find a better stove, in fact there are several stoves I have seen that cost hundreds more that are not as nice.

Been reading all about the NXR here on GW and today went and saw the 30" (not intending to buy it) and the store offered to sell me the floor model. A deal I couldn't pass up. 1800.00 plus NJ sales tx. Its being delivered tomorrow....phew glad thats done..was getting tired of reading about them. ..now I just need to get accessories but not rushing till I get some other things researched like my front load clothes washer. Thank you for all the posts...and I am glad I was able to see the range b4 we purchased it and I am glad got a deal!

Cool , hope you enjoy it and it comes in undamaged.
We still love ours so far after 5+ months.

Really hard to beat the NXR "for the price" only stoves that even come close are the Blue Stars but that is ONLY if you happen to live in Canada and you can them for about $2100 plus tax and plus shipping still brings it to well over $2500.

So for what you have to choose from in the under $1800 price range, nothing beats the NXR for a 30" stove.
