affording your plan--how do you know?

I have been working on designing my own house plan for a while now and think I have the perfect plan for our family. But how do I know that it is even feasible financially? I have not chosen a builder yet. There is a man who has a "drafting" business I've spoken to on the phone who has come highly recommended by two builders I've interviewed. He charges per square foot to put onto blueprints what you want. But before I pay for that, I need to know if I'm in the right ball park financially. Should I be asking builders I'm interviewing for their ball park estimate of what it'd cost to build my plan? Or should I go back to the draftsman and ask him to ball park it before he really draws it? Thank you !
