Lighting - Above mirrors or Beside mirrors?
Comments (6)That's one of my issues. I have 8-1/2 foot vanity and 9' ceilings. I would have loved to put scones on either side of two mirrors; however, my sinks are so close to the walls, that won't work. I was in desperate need of lighting so I bought "temporary" scones to put above the sinks (where my old lights were). Well, I love the lights! And where I once thought I'd put in two mirrors or one mirror framed in marble...I'm putting in a beveled mirror on the entire wall (I think). But...my first choice would have been to put sconces on either side of the mirrors. It's a beautiful look. Twogirls, I was also worried about the height of the ceilings. Are you putting in crown molding? That may help....See MoreVanity lights -- sconces or over the mirror lighting
Comments (4)Sconce lighting is IDEAL as long as it is at face level. You want the light to reflect evenly on your face if at all possible. So, lights on either side of the mirror, or, mounted directly over the mirror are ideal as long as they are at eye level. Bathroom bar lighting is unflattering and doesn't provide an accurate lighting for your face. Hope that makes sense. I'm not in anyway promoting RH sconces, this is just meant to give you an idea of the ideal type of sconce for the bathroom. You can also check out the National Kitchen and Bath association recommendations for lighting in a bathroom. A web search of "National Kitchen and Bath Association" will bring up their site. Comments (10)I used 4 similar sconces (Restoration Hardware Double Sutton) in my master and replaced the included incandescent light bulbs with round 40W LED bulbs because I was worried about heat and electricity usage. I'm very happy with the effect - cool, probably brighter though not as warm a glow. My contractor thought 3 sconces would have been enough, but I am happy with 4. I put in 2 75W LED can lights over the vanity, which though bright, cast facial shadows since they were located too far from the wall (10" vs. 4"- 6") - look a little ghoulish at 60+ years of age. We had above mirror makeup lights which I loved, so I would recommend horizontal above mirror lights for your situation. My RH medicine cabinets have 2 halogen lights, so sometimes I use just them to put on makeup, and they do run a little hot. I just don't put on makeup that often. And there is 1 general LED can light with diffuser in the vanity area. This post was edited by gildee on Sun, Sep 7, 14 at 16:11...See MoreArticulating sconces above mirrors in master bath
Comments (6)I put bright tube sconces above each medicine cabinet because my design changed in the years between buying the lights and installing them. Originally, they were supposed to go one on either side of the two med cabs, which were going to be very close together, side-by-side. If I wore makeup, the lighting at my mirrors would not be ideal. I do believe that the designer-types here are right when they say that mirrors need side sconces. My lights project the light out into the room and do not really create shadows. But they do not really give even light on the face. Luckily, my DH says that he does not notice this for shaving! Your down lights will create shadows under every protrusion on the face - brow ridge, nose, and hair. I do love the look of these lights, but I think they are better mounted like this in a laundry or above a potting sink....See Moreherring_maven
