We bought an LG CD fridge when we arrived in New Mexico last year. When it seemed to be running a little high in temperature, we called the LG customer service (an 800 number), and they sent out a local repairman without delay. He came a day after we called, checked it out and told us everything was fine. As it's a high efficiency fridge, it adjusts slowly to changes in set temperature but it gets there in the end. I'm sorry I can't recall the model number, but it was highly rated by AJ Madison, and it's been perfect in the 6 months we've owned it. I think list was a little over $2000. We also bought LG washer/dryer from local Home Depot. We have an 800 customer service number for these too, and were told they have local service support. As nothing has malfunctioned, we haven't had to call so I don't know how good the service is. So far, based on our experience, I would not hesitate to recommend either product. If the appliances are well made, perhaps you won't need a lot of service? Cheryl

there is a drain hose that gets plugged up. then the melted ice will freeze in the drain hole that drains to the pan under the fridge. the best thing to do is let the freezer thaw out then lay it down on the floor and blow into the drain hose to see if it can be cleared out. if it is plugged you will not be able to blow through it. mine was plugged with dog hair of all things and i could not clear it out until the ice was melted away from the drain hole. another thing to check is the defrost timer. its on the back of the freezer. if you have not heard it go into the defrost cycle the timer or heating element may be bad. some timers can be turned manually to the next cycle on the timer itself to start a defrost cycle.

Thank you Susan! :o) I did not even think of Best Buy! I have had relatively good experiences with them. And I am thinking that the Amana is actually the same as the Whirlpool. But I did end up biting the bullet and ordering the fridge from Home Depot. When I called the Lowe's store in Rockland County, NY near where my grandma lives to get info on fridge and delivery, installation, etc., they put me on hold 5 times to ask me who I was holding for each of those times. Then I FINALLY spoke to someone in appliances who sounded completely unenthusiastic to assist me only to tell me that they don't sell Amana appliances (which I'm not sure is true). So even though I've had great experiences with the Lowe's stores here where I live in Seattle area, I knew after that phone call I did not want to deal with that particular store. Then, I called US Appliances and they told me things that contradicted what was on their website. So they were crossed off my list as well. So after calling other places (except for Best Buy) and looking online for more info and not getting anywhere, I just shrugged my shoulder and thought at this point it doesn't really matter who I buy the fridge from 'cause it seems like they all suck in some way, shape or form! Customer svc. just isn't what it used to be no matter where you go! So the fridge will be delivered the day before Christmas Eve, which is perfect timing because I will be in NY visiting my grandma and the rest of my family for the holidays anyway. And I was pleased that I was able to schedule the delivery for this day! I am looking forward to my grandmother's reaction when she sees a new fridge in her kitchen but am also very apprehensive that Home Depot is going to screw me somehow. Hopefully that won't happen and if it does, oh well, life will go on, I guess!! :o) Anyway, there's my saga. Thanks for reading!!! Kevin

Danby have been around. I don't know anything about the company. They seem to make basic units and a lot of special sizes and specialty units. I don't remember seeing any reports from users. Freezer technology for the basic function is old. What's newer is evaporators. If you want no frost, an evaporator system will be far superior, but perhaps not in budget. Manual defrost freezers, even dirt cheap ones, if you're careful about not opening the door much, and certainly not standing there staring (it helps to keep a running list of what's in there instead of letting out all the cold), it should serve you well. For self-defrost units, that system would be the telling point. It's also old tech, so it should work, but how soon freezer burn sets in might vary. Given that individual usage creates wildly different environments in the freezer, it's hard to pin down which might work better for which person. I'd say a lot depends on your budget. If you like it better and get it, what happens if you're not happy with it? Can you afford to sell it at half of what you paid and try again? What if you weren't happy with a better known one, once you got it? The interior is important to me. That makes the Danby sound like a front runner for you.
