Air Conditioner help needed!

Hi all! I live in an apartment and am thinking about purchasing a portable air conditioner.

To be exact, I am looking at the EdgeStar Extreme Cool 12,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner.

Does anyone have any experience with the portable air conditioners? Do they work as well as a regular window unit? Our rooms our fairly small (none more than 300 sq ft -- in Manhattan).

Advice is MUCH appreciated!

The reason we are thinking of a portable air conditioner is that installing an air conditioner in our 7th floor apartment is a real pain and limits the use of our windows. It would be nice to be able to actually open the window on a nice day (which we couldn't do with a window unit!).

The units work fine for what they are designed to do. Keep in mind, you'll still need a window to exhaust the condenser air but, it is a lot less cumbersome than an entire window unit.

Tell me, what do you mean by they work well for "what they are designed to do"? Does this mean they work as well as a regular window unit?

Also, I know we still need a window (which we have) -- I just thought it might be easier to drag the unit from room to room as needed and to pull they little window slide out, rather than have big units in each window at all times -- which would both block my views and be a pain to install and remove come winter!

To be clear I did NOT say that they INSTALLLED the $30 thermostat for $200. I said they sold me a $30 thermostat for $200! The INSTALLATION and the SERVICE CALL were TOTALLY different charges so the whole thing was about $600 (and it conked out 3 days later so changing the thermostat didn't fix the problem,and so much for thier "diagnosis") so I DO think that the people I dealt with were thieves. I find it interesting that you would jump to such an erroneous conclusion as to me being difficult being the problem. That was REAL helpful. What I had hoped for was somewhere to start educating myself about what to look for in a good central air conditioner and what factors make one better than another, and if there ARE any REAL hazards about one kind of system over another (although I find that unlikely in refridgeration but I don't know which is why I'm asking). Otherwise the NEXT few people I deal with may try to convince me that System X will explode,and that is why Sytem Y which THEY install is better. Thanks

Tigerdunes, I am having a 2.5 tom replaced. The home is 3400 sq. ft. but this AC is for the upstairs only, I'm guessing 12-1400 sq. ft. The thermostat is icomfort Wi-FiÃÂ® Touchscreen Thermostat Include Merv 11 air filtration system I have discussed the humidity with the HVAC company. I have no idea of the typical run tines, but it is NOT cyclling on and off. The reason for the replacement is multiple leaks in the condenser. They added 5 lbs. of freon to tide us over, to be recovered and credited back to up with new installation. Is there any other information I can provide. Thank you and this forum for any assistance. I did a quick search on the AS site for opf10w and found no information. I would suspect a 2.5 ton a/c would be excessive, unless you have zero insulation and questionable construction. Recommend that you have a heat calc done (or do yourself [hvac-calc.com]) to determine your heating/cooling needs. I (sorry for all of the I's) also searched for the Chronotherm 111 stat, but there are many models (do you have a model number--may be on the back plate)? The information that I found was not sufficient to give you an informed answer. If your stat is a single stage unit, most 2 stage furnaces will work on a timer on the control board (not the best way). A 2 stage stat gives you better comfort and efficiency. mike_home, Thanks for the info. I will consider a heat pump. This year the state of new jersey now requires all ac installers to receive training and state licenses in ac installation. In my research it has been stated quite a few times, the ac will work only as well as it was installed. Lennox has premier installers and only a very few of the other brand installers are NATE trained. But the majority are still not ac trained licensed installers. The majority are plumbers and electricians. My concern is the duct work and the refrigerate not being done to specifications. Many hvac contractors offer only one year labor. Unfortunately a number of homeowners found themselves shelving out more money 2,3,4, years later, just for labor. The installer is as important as the ac with 10 year limited warranties. I can accept an annual maintenance contract, but want the ac to work as smoothly as the Luxaire had for 35 years.

They're a LOT more expensive for the BTUs you get vs. a standard window unit. They're cumbersome to drag around, so they really aren't that "portable" when it comes right down to it. And they take up floor space. Another consideration is the power requirements. A 12,000 BTU AC will probably consume most of a standard 30 amp receptical circuit. Meaning that if you have it plugged in, you'd better not plan on running anything else off that circuit or you'll probably blow a circuit breaker. Some 12K units will even require a 20 amp circuit.

For apartment dwellers, a couple of smaller lightweight 5K units that can be strategically placed in certain zones often makes more sense than a portable. It'll be cheaper, for sure. You can usually find a small 5k unit for under $150. You'll have less electrical load, especially if you only run them one at a time when you are in the specific zone. Yes, you'll have to pull them out and store them when cooling season is over, but you'd have to figure out storage for a portable too.

CR apparently did reviews of some of these. They basically said that if you have to use one, chose a model that uses two hoses (one for intake, one for exhaust). They do NOT work as well as a window unit of the same size. You also want to make sure you have a way to drain the condensate (hose into a pan or whatever).
