Darn , my RH Dillion Sconces don't seem bright enough!

Hey folks.

I just got the RH Dillon Sconces installed in my new Master Bath...one on each side of the vanity mirrors. And darn if they are not very bright??!! I have recessed ceiling cans in ceiling, but I didn't put one ABOVE the vanity....there is one a foot or so back behind and over.

It doesn't look like enough light!! I was hoping to have a nice well lit shave!!

I hate to replace these sconces..I like the lok and they are installed!! I was thought about adding a double/triple above the mirror...but that would look STUPID I think?

Maybe add a recessed light just directly ABOVE the vanity??

Please Help!!!

I'd bet it would make a big difference to position the light over the mirror, if that is an option. We are close to ordering the Dillon sconces ourselves - not sure as to how we'd place them - but am thinking about a double over each of the medicine cabinets...does anybody know whether there is a standard guideline that dictates placement of the lamp relative to the vanity top? I'd LOVE to see pictures, if anybody is willing to share. Anyway, DRK, hope you have luck resolving this - it really is an attractive fixture!

Robin, sconces on either side of the mirror at about face level (66") is suppose to provide the most flattering light. Not sure about guidelines for over the vanity.

drkona, I know you said you like the fixture, but what if you changed out the glass for something similar but with clearer glass?

LOL, ZAMSX is right. That goes for everybody living in the house. It is a pain to live staged. I used to spray the closets with Fabreeze "Linen & Sky", pour Pine Sol down the bathroom drains, and mop all the way out the door for every showing. Yup, certifiable. LMAO today. When we were selling a staged house my DH kept asking: When am I going to have my stuff back?!!! I'd say: Soon Dear. As soon as we sell. Soon. LOL Silicon Valley. Wow. I'm in NE. Two different worlds. How's your market? MB- Euro shams would be nice, and 2 regular, with the purple one popping the finished look. -Do you have a couple of white or light slipcovered Parson's chairs for the FP area? Borrow them. Any small chair slipcovered for warmth(Target has slipcovers) will work. Kitchen- Stand the 3 paintings (12x14 or so)leaning against the backsplash wall, vertically , but not completely straight. If you have lights shining on them from lights under the cabs would be nice. The reason I mentioned BM Silkien Pine in the kitchen is because its considered a neutral green. Some buyers are sensitive to green, some are sensitive to blue. You can't win. A couple of light rooms with pale grey/blue, or pale grey/green are fine. The rest should be in the off-white/ cream/beige family. You shouldn't have a problem finding paint to go with Ivoire. Any BM Neutral Whites will work. BTW- I read where you're considering making one of your sons' bedrooms into an office. Don't do it. Leave it as a bedroom. One den downstairs is enough.

You have a gorgeous ceiling and fireplace! They should be the stars of the room. I'm a bit of an audiophile myself, so I understand that sound bars and other all-in-one type speakers are completely unacceptable. And the speakers can't point in a different direction or be shoved smack dab up against the EC. They're too close as it is. Having said that, the problem is that the sheer size of the EC and the darkness of the color force the eye right to it instead of the beautiful features of the room, the ceiling and fireplace. This is one of the many reasons I hate TV and have only recently allowed one into my home. I can't stand it when people spend creativity, time, and money decorating a lovely living room like you have obviously done, and then the whole focal point of the room is the TV! I really like what Beverly did above. Rather than try to hide it, which is impossible and just makes it look even more imposing, she played up its good features, added the green, which is a very nice touch, and made it look like it's supposed to be there. The other iterations make it look out of place, although everything was an improvement over the first pics with that big thing on the top. Beverly took the good things from your inspiration photo and made them work in your room! Now you can play up the fireplace and people can see it, and the ceiling, without being overwhelmed by the EC. Your EC now looks like it was invited and welcomed into the room instead of looking like your DH sneaked it in there in the middle of the night and it is most unwelcome. :-) Hope this is helpful! I have an update and would love to get some feedback before I order the final accessories. (Demo begins one week from today!) I got a quote for replacing the vanity with white cabinetry complete with a sitting area, plus hardwiring of sconces. The costs all added up to too much for me, so I'm sticking with my vanity and overhead lighting location. I feel great about my choices for tile, bath tub, paint, and fixtures. My worry is that all the little accessory details won't quite work together, diminishing the beauty of the bathroom as a whole. I need to buy the accessories soon; here's what I have in mind. With overhead lighting instead of sconces, I prefer one large mirror. The mirror is by Pottery Barn, a wooden frame with gold gilt, 72" x 36". Perfect size for the space, very very very hard to find. This is technically a floor-length mirror, so I hope it can be mounted horizontally! PB customer service was useless when asked. The lights are also PB, polished nickel. For practical reasons, I ruled out any overhead lights that take type B bulbs (too dim) and have fabric shades (too hard to clean). As a big plus, these are on sale for $170 each. Do they go with the mirror and the rest of the room? Chandelier is PB, 18" diameter, antique brass, UL-listed. This will be over the tub on a dimmer. It was hard to find a chandy that's not too big, ornate, and/or expensive. Knobs and pulls are glass and polished nickel from Restoration Hardware. Towel ring, TP roll, and hook are Ballard Design in polished nickel. Fabric for the roman shade is gray on cream linen. Shower bench is Signature Hardware in teak. I hope this will help tie in the wood of the vanity with the other side of the room. Towel warmer is polished stainless steel (no nickel option) from Signature Hardware. If anything doesn't quite mesh or looks wrong, I would love to hear, as well as any suggestions for alternatives!

Really doing a lot of great things.....but.....when you began the room, it was full of big dark wood, now it seems to be full of small glass and metal.....I think you need a mix and something really big on the fireplace or nothing at all.....just an opinion, but you are doing great things.....

Is the room painted? [paper faced drywall seems to really soak up light]. Did you check after dark? [most room light seems weak if its competeing with a bright window]

If they are already the max wattage allowed, switch to daylight CFs, and remember it takes a few seconds for them to reach full brightness. The 25 watt CFs give the equivalent of 100 watts of incandescent. The daylights are a clean, white light with no flicker and better color rendering than a regular incan.

Oh, and I think the third sconce can look quite nice, depending on the height of the ceiling and the overall space.

budge1: Well, the glass on the sconces can't be replaced w/ clearer glass...it is all one piece.

oruboris: The bulb is a 60W max....but maybe I could try a CF bulb for a bit more brightness...what brand do you recommend?

Look at the link below...this is for a triple sconce to match my singles on each side of mirror. Do you think it would look OK to have this ABOVE the mirror whilst having the singles on either side? Would it be too crowded/busy?? They also make a double-sconce version???

I was also thinking of adding a can light just above each vanity???

I think you may need to add an overhead fixture since even a triple fixture with frosted shades would not provide good lighting.

Newport Brass makes a squared sconce (model 19-51) that is available in a variety of finishes and a clear shade.
