Can't turn off monitor

Everything was working fine earlier this morning. Now, when I tried to turn off the monitor with the power button on it, nothing happens. The picture just stays on. I tried shutting down and restarting- still had the problem. I went into the control panel and tried to shut it off automatically "after one minute" -didn't work.

Any idea what is wrong?

You seem to have 2 problems if I understand correctly. Using the On/Off switch on the bottom of the monitor no longer works? Do feel or hear a click if in fact you felt or heard the click before?

Right click desktop and using Properties also does not work to cause the monitor to go into 'Snooze' mode?

A make and model of both the monitor and computer might work wonders for anyone trying to assist. This is a desktop or laptop?

Sounds like the power switch on the monitor is not working.

Buy a power strip to switch the monitor separately. I would'nt fool aroung with the switch much or you may end up buying a new monitor.

If you have not cleaned the inside of your tower in the last year, especially if you have animals and a lot of dust, do yourself and your pc a huge favor and open that thing up and get those dust bunnies out of there, that in itself will save you a LOT, your pc will run better, less heat, last longer and not take as much effort to run. That is one of the top killers of computers. And it is a task anyone can do. If you need tutorials there are tons of them on google and youtube with step by step direction and we are here to help also. Just do it!! Mine have clear panels so everything inside is visible I have to keep a neat pc LOL But I love having the ability to see what is happening inside. Plus I like all the pretty lights too. I also cringe when I hear " I just turn off the power strip " My sincere hope is that each individual pc and monitor were actually properly shut down individually Before the strip was just turned off!! Unfortunately I know in some cases that is not so.

I know some LCD monitors have replaceable backlights; not sure if your Princeton is among them. I would check with Princeton or places that sell electronics parts. I suspect that, with the continually falling prices of new LCD monitors and because most people would have to pay for any parts replacement, the unit is BER. However, at this point you risk little (not even the old-fashioned jolt you could get from CRTs), so I would take it apart methodically, look for anything that failed a smoke test, and maybe you'll get lucky and find it's a cheap, generic part. Otherwise, I'd go monitor shopping.

You probably just need a new washer in the tub faucet (providing this is the type set-up that has separate cold and hot faucets). First, determine if the offending faucet is the cold or the hot. With the water for the house off, remove the valve handle, a screwdriver will probably be needed for this. Remove the escushion and then the valve stem (with a crescent wrench) and replace the washer on the end of the stem. If it were to be a long term fix, you should also replace the valve seat.

There could be a feed-in and feed-out in that switch box, the feed-out could lead to the receptacle that the monitor is plugged into. When toggling the switch the movement might open and already loose connection causing the monitor to shut off. That's just a theory. If the monitor is plugged into to correct outlet of the UPS (some outlets are not protected) I don't know why it would shut off.

Thanks for the information It's a Nspire 17" monitor-four years old. I think it may be a bad switch as it did work twice when I pressed it. but it usually won't.

You mentioned turning the monitor off with the power strip. I can do that but isn't it bad to leave the picture(image) on the screen all day?

Many video cards can turn the monitor off or on or put them into a power saving mode.

nersoft has a small windows command line .exe that does lots of things like that.

As an example...
Have a shortcut on my laptop/desktop;
C:\anyFile\nirsoft\nircmd\nircmd.exe cmdwait 1000 monitor off
a mouse wiggle wakes it up.

Of course I included a keyboard shortcut too; "Cmd + Alt + Down" .. but that didnt work so well... just turns my display upside down ;)
