Tiles look wrong; GC says they have to slope

Let me see if I can explain this....our bathtub adjoins the shower stall, so the glass shower wall will end on the bath tub -on the tile surrounding the bathtub in fact. GC has sloped the tiles claiming the shower water needs to run into the shower rather than lie on a flat surface.

But as I look at the bathtub, it looks as though the tiles have just been badly installed.

What do you think?

I think that we need pictures to make a judgement. However, your GC is correct, the tiles do need to be slightly sloped.

My bath WAS built this way. No slope. Water puddled at the glass on the shower side. Eventually the water seeped through the grout, etc and rotted the tub surround. Then the tub collapsed.

My most dangerous Uninformed Idiotic Orange Apron Episode Was when I was in electrical and the helper boy was explaining to a couple that they could run 12 gauge lamp cord inside their circuit breaker panel box. He was in the process of selling them a small spool of lamp cord. I had to step in and tell him he was wrong. He got ticked off and told me that he had learned at "Home Depot University" that NEC code said to use 12 gauge wire for 20amp breakers. Uh, yeah, but that's 12 ga solid copper conductors, not 12 gauge strand lamp zipcord. His argument then turned to "12 gauge is 12 gauge, it's all the same." Danger, Will Robinson!

Yes, it is on the tub deck that extends into the shower. We spoke with the marble guy today and although he says that they noticed it was not sloping as expected (ie towards the shower floor), it is the responsibility of the carpenter to buld the tub surround with the slope. What I think really stinks is that they did not even mention the slope issue to me during installation and that it's not even level! Shouldn't they be responsible to at least ensure that the slab is installed completely level? The contractor says the marble installers are to blame since the tub surround is built level and the installers can manipulate the pitch by the way they install the slabs. The marble installers are telling me it will cost $900 to fix since they will most likely ruin the slab when they remove it (it's in 4 pieces). What to do?

Thank you for the reply JFC. Yes, the tiles are not very long, and I have no idea if I will or will not like the uniform way. I guess my question is, is the uniform way look normal? Do people lay these kind of tiles like that? I don't want to rip the whole thing out if it's not necessary, so is it necessary is the main question (necessary = bad looking and will bug me so bad that it has to be redone)? kmanetta, The rule of thumb for slope on a deck is 1/4" per foot. if your pool is 6' from the patio then the slope would be 1 1/2". Saying they couldn't lower the pool 2" more is pretty dumb. Sounds like they screwed up. Keep in mind that deck-0-drain is common for providing drainage. How much slope are you dealing with now?

What about using a solid surface material here? Granite, silestone, etc.

Thanks all. (Sorry no digital camera for pictures).

Now I feel stuck. It's not so much the sloping tiles that bother me as the grout build-up on the adjoining ones to get them to the same height.

Kevin, the original plan was for granite. Unfortunately, the the fact that some of the granite would overlap the edge of the bath wasn't taken into account when the vanity was installed, so now we can't use granite as we would be unable to open the vanity door. Hence the tile is Plan B - and not turning out to be a good one!

THAT's where he's wrong. If he's sloping the tiles where the shower glass till be, he needs to slope ALL the tiles on that side, not some of them, and then all of the sudeen the tiles sit straight, and it looks like the riser on s stair step. THAT'S unacceptable.
