Homemade Outdoor Wok Range?

John Liu

With summer coming to the Pacific Northwest - that's the rumour, anyway - I'm thinking of making an outdoor wok range.

Basically, the idea would be:

- Buy a wok burner like the one at the top of this page http://www.indiajoze.com/equipment.html

which is at the local Chinese market for about $70, no tax and no shipping

- Buy a regulator, maybe the one on the above page

- Mount the burner on a steel work table that I'd find used at a restaurant supply store, maybe rivet some sheet sheet to the backside as a flame guard

- Connect it to a propane tank like the one that powers my gas grill

- Have a big lid and fire extinguisher handy

- And cook away.

This would be strictly for outdoor use. I'd set it up next to my BBQ. Goal is to do it for well under $300. Above that, and I'd probably try to find a used single-hole wok range like

http://www.selectappliancepro.com/exec/ce-product/ir_isp-j-w-13

and figure out how to convert it to propane.

Can anyone give me comments, ideas, safety pointers, things I've missed? I imagine I can get plenty of oomph from a propane tank?
