I dragged our old Dell Tower out of the closet. It's been 4 or 5 years since it was turned on, and for the most part I think I got everything off of it.

However, I think there are some files that I need. Problem is, it's password protected to log on.

NO ONE can remember the password. I've tried opening it in safe mode, but it's still asking for the password.

Anyone have any suggestions?

My suggestion would be to remove the harddrive from the old computer and either buy an enclosure (pretty cheap on EBay and plug the enclosure into a USB port and access the files that way (it will show up as another drive much the same as a thumbdrive does) or, if you have another desktop, install the old HD in the new computer and access it that way...

Hi carolssis I see where garmanma has responded to your post in BC. Not following you around, I am a 'part time' help mod over there. 8) You would be wise to follow the advice given and do exactly as said. If garmanma says that the HJT team can help .. They can. Don't run a killdisk program until or unless they tell you. Sometimes it takes awhile for a response to a HJ post but they do get back to you as quick as they can. Good Luck

there's methods to do it use google that is not something that I post on any forums for safety sake. That is something that should never happen that is one password you want to be sure you write down and save. To be safe every one should follow the very easy directions to make the password recovery disk. Here is a link that might be useful: recovery disk

I admit, I don't always post where I get my recipes from. Sometimes I've had them for so long, I honestly don't remember. Also I don't follow recipes to the T, I make changes, so they aren't the original source. Am I wrong? However, I am vehemently against, and get livid when I see a blatant theft of a published recipe being touted as her own, in her own cookbook, or on a blog. The one that got my back up was a Banana muffin recipe that a girl from my area has on her blog, and in her cookbook which you can buy. (I wouldn't). The recipe is word for word from Muffin Mania, a soft-cover cookbook on muffins that was sold in the 80's by a local woman. Her grand-daughters revived the book and made another publishing of it, and it's as popular as it was then. To have someone steal a known recipe and have it in their personal cookbook is wrong, wrong, wrong.

If you never set an administrator password, you can start it in safe mode, use administrator as the id and leave the password blank. If you get in you can reset the password for the other account in Control Panel User Accounts.

It's a big if but worth a try, IMO.

I have been trying for days to get into my old Windows XP desktop but couldn't remember my password. I followed pkponder's advice and finally opened it. Thank you, pkponder! However, when I went to the Control Panel User Accounts, I couldn't find anything. Does that mean the account with my user name is no longer there? Can it be recovered?
