Hello to you all! I really love this forum....no back-stabbing, name-calling, dummy-spitting. Just good people going out of their way to help others. Most refreshing and so different to other forums I visit! So please be gentle with me!

I've been reading several recent posts about preferred protection programs, and to be honest, I don't know the difference between anti-virus, malware, trojans etc.

It's occurred to me that I may be running too many or conflicting ones, so I hope that if I list what I have, you good people will advise me on which ones to delete (or add).

Spybot, AdAware, Avast, SuperASpyware, WOT, Scotty is always on patrol(cute little dog...love him!)Registry Mechanic, PConPoint, CCleaner, and as for Malwarebytes, I've downloaded and run it twice, but after a few days, its icon disappears from my desktop. I look in program files, and it's listed, but with (empty) next to it.

What's going on there? Is it sulking because it's detected that I have another similar program installed? Frustrating!

And R-C, if you're there, read your recipe for the clam and crawfish dish on Landzdown (Did you know that "I come from a Landzdown Under"?)...nearly swooned with pleasure at the sound of it!

You're not running much really.

Spybot does not run, unless teatimer is on. I think you would know if it was you would receive occasional pop ups from spybot, tea timer checks for registry changes and warns you about them. Spybot without tea timer is considered an (On Demand Scanner) That means you run it when you want, and it is not running all the time..

Keep Avast that is the Anti Virus program. Always running,

SuperAntiSpware does not run unless it is the paid version, On Demand Scanner.

Keep WOT, it just provides a warning about possible bad sites.

I would uninstall Registry Mechanic. It could be running on the system.

ccleaner, cleaning tool keep it, It also does not run on the system. On demand cleaning, there is a setting where you can set this to run But I would not use it.

Not sure what's going on with malwarebytes it also does not run on the system reinstall it when you need it up date & run it once a week. This is also an On Demand Scanner free version, There is a paid version and you don't need it with Avast,

PConPoint if this is a registry cleaner I would uninstall it and it could be running.

The only change I would make here is uninstall AdAware it's a resource hog (uses Ram) does little, and replace it with, Spywareblaster, you need to up date this program once a week.

All Anti Virus Programs RUN on the System, All fireWalls run on the system. Most spyware programs --- SuperAntiSpware, Spybot, Malwarebytes in fact do not run, until you run them.

So out of you list only AdAware and avast is running on the system.

People get confused about protection an what runs on the system and what are On Demand Scanners....

Nothing is conflicting here from what I see.

25 watts per 5 gallons is reccomended. Get one that has a control knob. The 7.5 says it is good up to 5 gallons and may be. But I don't think they have an adjustment on them. If a heater is overworked it will have a greater possibility to fail or worse over heat the aquarium. A 25 watt with an adjustment knob is the way to go. I like the freshwater master test kit by aquarium pharmaceuticals. I prefer the reagent type vs. multi test strips. In the long run the set is less expensive. The color cards are easier to read then some others, IMO. It has the vital tests you need pH, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. The strips ammonia test are sometimes skewed and are not accurate in some instances. It's like a Jr High chemistry set. You can get a small bottle of Prime by seachem or amquel+ ( I use prime, again a price thing you need less to treat more then amquel+, so it goes a long way) even though this is mainly for dechlorination it also removes ammonia and other crap. It can be double dosed to keep very high ammonia in check. Zeolite also helps. Usually just frequent water changes will dilute the water. If you read any of the bio-chemistry articles in the link I gave you you can see how pH plays a factor in the toxicity of ammonia and nitrites. Having well water is nice but you "could" have other issues to contend with. One major factor is pH, not so much for type of fish but it can really mess with establishing a nitrogen cycle. Water parameters will determine What% water to change and how often. After it is established, for regular maintainance IME with smaller aquariums I have found it better to do a smaller% more often, rule of thumb is 25% every 2 weeks minimally. If you have a Bio-wheel then you can change the cartridge part as the directions for it state. If you want to save a little$, make a slit in the blue fiber and dump out the activated carbon and replace it with new from a bulk container. I never had a problem in the past ( when I was a kid) establishing an aquarium. When I decided to start it up again (after 20 yrs.) I had alot of trouble. The city supplied water in the town I grew up in was pretty good quality and all I did was keep buckets of tap water on hand for water changes. I only had one test kit, pH, the litmus(sp?) paper. When that ran out I never replaced it. The only difference was water chemistry everything else I did was identical. The things I am mentioning are not gospel as the only way to do this. However, down the road when you may want to try different fish, live plants etc. it really helps to know how your system works and what is needed to maintain it. The only time I test the water now is if I suspect a problem or it has been a while since the last test. I always test new aquariums until I'm satisfied that they are OK. It is possibly true that flowering plants do one thing or the other as far as foliage and flower production is concerned. I noticed on some of my plants that once they start blooming consistantly, you don't see much new growth in the foliage. Having had hoyas for years not thinking they could flower outside of a greenhouse, I initially kept them because I liked the foliage, so getting a bloom here and there is exciting, but not a priority for me. I think if your main priority or reason for wanting hoyas is the flowers, then you should get the hoyas that are known for flowering young, because with alot of them, flowers on a young plant are the exception, not the rule. I have a kentiana that is several years old and hasn't flowered yet. I have hoyas that took over a decade to flower. Though it does happen early with some of the ones that notoriously take a long time, if you count on it too much you will probably lose interest in hoyas, because even growers with perfect conditions wait a long time for flowers in most varieties. But there are pretty reliable bloomers that bloom as young plants, like lacunosa, bella, multiflora, and a few others. Let your kentiana do it's thing and become a big bushy plant first - from a "decorative" point of view, you have to look at the whole plant, the flowers need some kind of background to show themselves off against, they really aren't as attractive if you just have a bloom hanging from a skimpy little plant. So, let it grow and in the meantime, look for the early bloomers, you might be able to find bella and multiflora at home Depot or Lowes, I would get those plants to keep me happy while I wait for the others to bloom!

You might get more input if you repost with your question in the title. I have miele all frig, all freezer columns. I like that they are well lit, plenty of space, drawers adjust, but the freezer cooling fan is loud. I've had the fan replaced twice but the unit is still loud. Unfortunately I don't have any input about the freezer drawers. I am quite happy with my miele fridge.

Have you considered a pale grayish-blue or grayish-green on your kitchen wall? I think something like that would go well with the turquoise you love, the gray in your living room, the chair, and your cabinet and trim stain. Keep in mind you don't have to pick the exact shade and saturation of a color (for example a color in the chair) to have the wall color coordinate. Matching the saturation of any of those chair colors on a wall would probably overwhelm your space. I like to get paint chips I'm considering and put them next to other paint chips (of colors in adjoining rooms that are staying) and other important elements in the rooms and sort of play with them in different light conditions to see if I like them together before even getting the paint samples. When you find one that "sticks" and you get a sample, it might help if you paint a big piece of paper, or at least wider swatches on the wall up against the cabinets so you're not seeing so much bright green in between. I think it's hard to "see" a color when it's so small and surrounded by a competing bright color. It's helped me to identify things that I love and know I want to keep and decorate around, and use those things as inspiration and to "consult" for each decision (like choosing paint). If you love the chair, that could be one thing to inspire your palette along with the gray and turquoise. It's okay that the chair doesn't have gray or turquoise... It has black (which is essentially just the most saturated gray ;) ) and it has a blue that looks like (at least on my monitor) it coordinates with turquoise. Of course you also have to make sure your choices go with what's there and not changing for awhile (such as trim, cabinets, and couches). Don't get stuck on decorating around dish towels... unless you really love them and they're one of your inspirations! Anyway, not sure if this will help at all, but I've been where you are, overwhelmed and feeling like things will never come together. Reading the advice on this forum has helped me a lot in thinking about my own space and how to pull things together. But if your gut is saying the chair just isn't right, then I'd say listen to it. That's more important than any advice you can get from people looking at pictures and giving your opinions :) Good luck!!

Everything that Zep516 said I agree with. As for the deletion of Malwarebytes, that could be one of the other ones deleting it, my guess would be AdAware. Did you see what files were deleted after the scans?

Thank you all for your advice...will download Spywareblaster immediately, and delete AdAware...how do I know if I have a firewall?
And Fred....I have W2k, not '98! Do you think I'm THAT far behind with my technology? :>D

No, not at all, and the one on XP is only one-way, so it is not recommended here. Most here use either the free version of Zone Alarm or Commodo.

go to Start : Control Panel and click on the Security Center icon, have a check in the firewall section there lets see if the windows firewall is running..

If other firewall was installed there is most likely an Icon in the task bar, down by the clock indicating it is running...

Have installed Spywareblaster...

Another glitch...when I go to add/remove to uninstall AdAware, it's not even listed...nor under Lavasoft. Where could it be hiding?

hey Shax long time no see!! I miss ya! Glad you found a recipe over there you like, if you meant that seafood casserole one, that is one fabulous dish, I have seen people lick their plates LOL.

Zep pretty much said all I would say. Just remember for superantispyware, spywareblaster, malwarebytes to update them weekly and run the scans, spywareblaster however has no scan just update and hit the button that says enable all protection and you are done.

I agree I would bet adaware is fighting with malwarebytes so get rid of adaware, remove malwarebytes and re install it then update it. Malwarebytes and superantispyware are about the best and I run those weekly.

Keep spotty! he does a good job.

I sure would think that adaware should be listed in your add remove list, is it listed in program files? does it list it's own uninstaller?

I thought we had got you fixed up with a firewall when you were doing the clean up at LzD? if not yes you sure need one. I use zone alarm, if you happen to go for the zone alarm free one be sure you uncheck the extra stuff they try to install now you do not need any extra toolbars and junk.

shax- None could be less computer knowledge challenged than me! This forum has been so helpful- sometimes it takes me many questions to understand their answers, but never has anyone blasted me for not understanding.....well.. ALMOST never!!

Yep, adaware is listed in my program files, and gives instructions to uninstall, but they are what I'm trying....go to add/uninstall, click uninstall and it'll go! But it's not there...

Yes, I thought you guys added a firewall to my 'puter, but I wouldn't recognise one if it bit me! So I've installed Zone Alarm (which even denies me access to Firefox unless I approve!)

Yes it will ask for every thing that tries to access the internet but you will have it learning quickly what is ok and what is not, the ones you know for sure like firefox and your antivirus etc just be sure when the box pops up to tell it to remember so it does not keep bothering you. if you are not sure what it is don't do that till you know for sure, don't want to allow a nasty to phone home.

Hum I don't know if Revo uninstaller works on 2k or not, that might be an option for you, I will check on that. in the mean time here is the link for it if you want to dig around in there and see what it says.

R-C...installed Revo, but it, too, can't find AdAware...I know it's in there, 'cause it's on my desktop and opens fine when I click. Maybe if I update it, it'll overwrite the current version and leave its name in my add/remove file, from where I can delete the lot?

If you install the latest version, it should recognize that there's a version installed and upgrade it.

As far as Zonealarm requiring you to let Firefox access the internet, that's actually a good thing. I think the version that costs money is preconfigured with certain applications and their signatures so it's easier to use.

Forewarned is forearmed: any time a program that access the internet is upgraded, you'll need to give it permission the first time it runs. This is also a good thing. Years ago (probably around 2000) some security expert discovered that all the firewalls except zonealarm could be bypassed by naming a malicious program iexplore.exe. Zonealarm recognized that it wasn't the valid iexplore and blocked it. Now they all have this feature.

The key is that you can't just always allow an executable whose name you recognize access the internet. If you didn't install any upgrades, patches, etc, you shouldn't get a message that the program has changed. Note that IE is often upgraded with Windows updates.

One other note is that sometimes Zonealarm gets a little aggressive in blocking access. If you share devices on your network, you may need to designate it as a trusted zone.

I do a lot of work with various VPNs and sometimes I need to set them up as trusted zones so Zonealarm will treat them as LANs.

One other note on Ravencajun's advice that if you don't know for sure, don't allow the access, you may want to leave the "remember this setting" unchecked when you disallow access the first few times, just in case it's something that does need access and you just don't recognize it. There's a way to change these settings after the fact, but IMO it's easier to do them using the popup boxes.

I did just install the latest version of AdAware...it didn't overwrite the old one, just sat beside it! Did easily uninstall the new version, but original just sits there like a shag on a rock...

Did a google search for "uninstall AdAware" and seems I'm not the only one with this problem...even Corinne was there...

Success! Found my original download of the first AdAware in an obscure folder, re-installed it over the top of the existing one, then went to add/remove and uninstalled it! Icon disappeared too....
Reloaded Malwarebytes and all seems well....but there's always tomorrow!

ah Shax I think I found why you ended up with out a firewall after we helped you out(LzD), when you removed the Norton suite you were left with out one, then on this page
you no longer have a software firewall
Corrine mentioned to you to get one, but you had received your over the limit download warning at that point LOL
so I reckon you never got back to it.
Well now you have the zonealarm so that is covered.

Too many anti virus programs might inter flick with each other as they each usually come with their own firewall. However programs like spybot are just anti-malware and there's not problem with having as much as those as you can.

Weather here? Being our Summer, it's been around the 35C mark (95F), but coupla 40C (105F) days. Swap you for a few chilly days!
