Undermount sink?

We are planning on redoing our tiny guest bathroom...new vanity (39") and therefore new granite countertop. Right now we have a drop in cast iron sink, but are seriously considering an undermount sink.

If you have an undermount sink, please tell me what you love about it...Does mold build up on the perimeter of the sink?

Any suggestions as to brand or model number would be appreciated. We just want something mid-range in price. Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated.

What do I love about my undermount sink? No bump! And no, I don't get any mold build up.

Nothing grows or builds up around the rim of my kitchen undermount sink. Theres always that question but I've not found it to be an issue. I'm putting a glass undermount sink in my bathroom. I love the "no bump" and the extra counter space you get by not having the drop-in edges.

I was thinking about getting the Kohler Tresham drop in sink. It has a raised rim so I was thinking less water would get on the counter. I also liked that it already has the faucet holes in it so we wouldn't have to have the holes cut out. The bathtub and toilet are Kohler almond color so the sink would also be almond color. I like the look of the under-mount better and can get an almond in it. Thank you for your thoughts on this.

Mold resistant silicone for under-mount sink?

babyboomer1001: 100% silicone is perfect caulk between a sink flange and the bottom of stone. Polyseamseal and other Latex caulks are not; they do not have the adhesive stickiness or flexibility of silicone. It's best if you can pull your sink, clean the sink flange and stone bottom, recaulk with silicone and reinstall the sink. If this isn't reasonably possible, use a stiff plastic shim or plastic laminate to gouge the caulk out, clean the gap with acetone, and recaulk with silicone. Ignoring a leaking sink flange can have catastrophic consequences if your top has been "rodded" or reinforced with steel. If the fabricator used the wrong rod and/or the wrong bedding the rod can rust and blow up your top. I've fixed about 8 of these so far and it runs around $1,000.00-$1,600.00.

Well…of course you can do it--you can do almost anything if you're willing to take the trouble, but it seems to me pretty pointless to use godmorgon in this situation. You'll definitely lose the whole top drawer and may have to lose a good part of the bottom drawer, too, because of the plumbing. Godmorgon is very easy to adapt for vessel type sinks, but not so much for this. I'd honestly look for another brand that comes with an undermount sink already. This is going out of your way to make your life harder for less benefit. Personally, I wouldn't do godmorgon unless I was willing to use the ikea sinks meant for them. This look is popular enough that you should have plenty to choose from. Check out Duravit--they used to have a lot of vanities in this style, although I haven't looked lately.

Can I get an undermount sink, if my cabinets are recessed under sink?

You need to make a very accurate measurement from the bottom of the top to the top of the recess cabinet rail. Is it 8 1/2" or not? If so, an 8" deep sink will fit by 1/2". The other dimensions become irrelevant. If your engineered stone is 2cm with a 2cm edge build up, the bottom of the stone has now moved up 2cm which is a strong 3/4". Now you've got 8 1/2" + 3/4" = 9 1/4" which will accommodate most sinks. On a remodel, your cabinets may need to be shimmed on the top to get to level anyway, but I'd pick up the 1/16" + needed to get a Kohler 3821 into that top anyway. Make sure the sink you pick doesn't have a centered drain please; you want your disposal to clear. I strongly recommend a large single bowl sink.

Toto sinks are good. Also, I like undermount sinks with the overflow located in the front of the sink, so that you can't see it (versus the overflow placed under the faucet, where you can always see it).

Also, since you're thinking of an undermount, have you thought about the different shapes available? The rectangular ones are stylin' and mod. I myself prefer the oval. They come in different sizes, so you should decide whether you want more sink or more counter.

Not only easier to clean, but they LOOK cleaner, which is almost more important. Every sink in my new house is undermount.

I wish we could use the Kohler Ladena I've got sitting in my garage, but it doesn't look like it's in the cards. I love that sink so much--it's one of the stylin' rectangular ones :) that also looks clean and classic, IMO. Comes in large and small. The only downside for us was that the DIY factor was just a bit higher than I felt like taking on after everything else. If you've having a pro do your work, no problem :)

I only regret waiting so long to get them. We have the Kohler Caxton's. Dh has a short beard and when he trims it tiny whiskers are bound to fall. With the old sink, it was nearly impossible to get them all (the bump!) but now he just wipes them into his sink. Much easier and the granite just shines! : )

I appreciate all of you who responded to my question. We'll definitely consider an undermount bathroom sink.
How do the Toto sinks stand out from others?
Flyleft: Our vanity is already built, prepped with plywood for 2 cm granite. (I had the kitchen cabinet person build it to our specs and it is paid for!...very important as far as remodel goes). Dh will install it and connect plumbing. I hope we're not in over our heads. What is your opinion?
