Should Openings from One Room to Another Be Centered?
Comments (17)The layout of the great room should determine the placement of the doors. Will there be a TV or fireplace on the wall opposite the doors? If so, how will the furniture be placed? Can sofas be positioned away from the wall so that kitchen traffic flows without affecting TV viewing in the great room? Will sofas have to be placed off center to accommodate for centered French doors? Or will the TV/fireplace be placed on the north or south walls, and then, how will traffic flow around furnishings to get to the kitchen? Better to have the doors off center than to have to place your furnishings awkwardly to accommodate kitchen traffic. Your great room will never look right if your furniture is badly placed. If the doors are off center for better traffic flow, you can always balance that visually with a wall table, framed family photos, a mirror or artwork....See Morefireplace not in the center of the wall
Comments (19)The fireplace mass is comprised of two elements to create one. This means that you have to consider the two elements as one mass. While the black hole of the firebox is offset, you have to view the adjacent cabinet as one half of the whole. Because of this arrangement, it becomes really expensive to move any of that wall around. That's problem number one. Your second desire was to move the TV to above the fireplace box. You have an obviously load bearing beam above that space and the ceiling won't be high enough to accommodate a television. I don't think it is going to fit. The way the current entertainment wall is designed is the most comfortable angle for viewing. You would be selecting one good function for a less than good function with the TV above the fireplace. What you could do is take out the TV cabinet and hang the TV on that wall. With a family, I bet that series of cabinets is valuable storage space that you don't want to lose. That's a tradeoff. By changing the furniture, we may be able to optimize the use and save you a bunch of money and trouble in the process....See MoreGreat Room Fireplace Not Centered with Room - Please Help :(
Comments (52)I had a client change there mind and wanted a vaulted ceiling in their living room. The problem was the master bedroom was above the living room and the second floor joists were being installed that very moment. They stopped construction and I offered the idea of raising the living room ceiling two feet to eleven feet and providing an extra set of steps in the second floor hallway leading to the master bedroom space. The change was made and everyone's happy. It is sometimes worth it to make late changes in construction to make the design better....See MoreLiving room with a huge wall on one side a fireplace in the middle.
Comments (8)Can’t really see much furniture but usually you want to face the furniture toward the fireplace/focal point …it won’t obstruct the view …if you place it far enough away for a grouping… usually a couch centered on fireplace an a side chair or two angled on each end/side to round out an area for conversation as well …tables at each end of the couch can also serve the chair seating.. if there is room behind the couch for a long-ish console table… I love to see that low enough to have a chair or bench to sit at.. for a snack…or to sit cups or glasses while watching tv...See Morecarsonheim
