Semi-Recessed Robern Medicine Cabinet Problem
Comments (1)I have used the Robern mirrored medicine many times in my clients' homes as well as my own. If you would like to recess the unit into the wall (depending upon the model you are using) it is sometimes necessary to cut out one stud in the wall and then "brace" between the two flanking studs. You MUST take great care in doing this as there can be electrical in the way - not to mention the integrity of the wall itself - so it all depends upon the particular installation. The mirrored strips for the side are for a surface mount installation - so obviously the unit will protrude. Hope this helps! Good luck and BE CAREFUL!...See MoreNeed help deciding on medicine cabinet options
Comments (4)Threnee-A few thoughts. First, Doug is right about Robern. Their cabinets are beautiful although expensive. I was thinking about buying the new Uplift cabinet, which opens straight up like a garage door. It avoids you having to step away to open the door. You could hang pendant lights in front of it--that's how they show it in the catalog. I ultimately decided not to buy the cabinets--I needed two and the scale didn't work anymore with my room. We decided to go with towers on either side, which I had before and I much prefer. We are putting the lights on the side of the tower. So you could try that. Finally, you might think about putting a tall, shallow closet on the back wall and either mirroring the door or using plantation shutter doors--I happen to love that look. A shallow closet would hold all the little stuff. I came to the conclusion that medicine cabinets are expensive and provide much less optionality that other solutions. Comments (7)Mine is opening towards the toilet and it's fine. Keep in mind that the guests usually don't use your medicine cabinet. Without opening it, most people won't be able to even notice that it opens one way or another. Look at all of these powder room photos: can you guess to which side the open? Comments (2)For the med. cab. over the sink, I'd recommend one the same size or smaller than your vanity width visual appeal- fixtures "stacked" on top are equal or less than the lower item's width as a visual rule. A 20"+ mirrored swing door will be heavy, and especially if you'll be using it daily, get a quality cabinet....Kohler puts substantial hinges on theirs, even their reasonably priced ones stocked at HD. The width AND depth of the sconces from the wall would be considerations for being hit by the opended swing door, but this shouldn't be an issue if they are fairly standard size and don't have unusually delicate glass...you see this placement all the time....just open with care. : )...See More_usernameblank_
