toto soft-close seat

I have a Toto Aquia toilet with a soft-close seat installed nearly a year ago. We love the toilet but the soft-close seat doesn't seem to want to stay upright. Very early on I e-mailed Toto USA with pictures of the installation (showing the seat upright past vertical) and they promptly sent another one out to me free of charge. I installed it but with no success. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.

I have several in my house and we've never had the problem you describe. I did have the opportunity to reassemble the mechanism once when the hinge pin became disconnected. I'm wondering if somehow the mechanism is installed backwards so that it's pushing the seat down instead of fighting the weight to keep it up (hence soft close).. Does it still soft close? You might take a look at it if your somewhat handy, it's pretty easy to disassemble.

Yes, it soft closes.....it just won't stay upright unless you hold it in place for about 30-45 seconds. The lid always stays up fine but the seat is the problematic part. We had the same exact problem with both seats we installed.

The Toto Soft-Close seat isn't automatic. You have to give it a push, then it will slowly close without slamming. The Soft-Close seat comes as a standard feature on many of the Toto toilet models, and can be purchased separately for installation on non-Toto toilets. Toto also makes an automated toilet called "Neorest" It raises the lid automatically as you walk toward the toilet, has a built in Washlet, heated seat, a unique flushing system, and the lid automatically closes and flushes when you rise. I have the Toto Drake w/ soft close lid. The seat stays up just fine. The "lid" slowly closes if you start closing it a bit. If you don't start pushing the lid downward, it also will stay up just fine. Maybe yours is defective, unless Toto makes more than one type of soft close. BTW, I've had mine about 11 months and have experienced no problems.

I just had 4 Toto toilets installed and had a hard time figuring out which ones to get and which seats. Since I needed 4, I went with the good old Toto Drake to save a few bucks although some of the other styles would have been easier to clean around. I bought the regular old Soft close seat for the elongated bowl. I found that I don't care which Toto I ended up with. They are so wonderful and the soft close seats are wonderful. I never, ever thought I'd be standing there flushing over and over again and marveling over a toilet. But I did. And slamming the seat, which doesn't slam. It's unbelievable how these things perform, even the entry level models. I could go on all day. I also bought two Toto pedestal sinks because I'm in love with Toto now and they were cheaper than a Kohler sink. I have a 4 year old and I suspect the Toto Drake could take a Barbie Doll, no problem.

I think the pro's out way any con's if the con's do exist. I never read the don't sit on it statement but I am sure we have. I love the the soft close cover because more times then not the seat cover is down. I too have been to other locations and found out the hard way that their toilet seat is NOT a soft close! Opps! When cleaning the toilet I have always forced the cover down not real fast but I have pushed on it and it still works beautifully. I think those statements are there to protect the manufacturer from claims. I say go for it, you will be very happy with the soft close seat.

Unlikely as it sounds, I'd check the toilet for level. If the front is a bit lower than it ought to be, the lid would be more likely to stay up, and the seat to fall.

Or the back of the toilet's too far forward. We've had 2 toilets with that problem. Not soft close, but regular seats - the lid would stay up, but the seat wouldn't. Ever.
