Bathroom remodel....tub to shower...window help!!

Here's the deal. I just recently remodeled the bathroom in my new home. The house was built in 1943, and it had a full tub/shower. We ripped out the tub and replaced it with a walk-in shower. The issue we are facing (which we unfortunately didn't realize until the tile was already on the walls) is that the window sticks out of the wall (into the shower) about 3/4". We have been unable up til now to come up with a solution to our issue, therefore no molding has been put in place (except for vinyl baseboards siliconed just to prevent water damage). What is the best way to go about fixing the molding around this window? One person told me to use "Corian(sp?)". Another said to hand plane the wood framing of the window so that it is flush with the tile, then to use PVC molding. I'm at a complete loss and just want to finish my shower! (Oh, I forgot to mention that the old molding was wood molding. Completely damaged over the years, rotting it out. This is something I would rather not repeat). Thanks so much in advance for any and all help!

I'd be concerned about having wood framed window in the shower at all..... can't you replace it with a vinyl framed one?

barring that, can you take a photo and show us so we can see all the relationships and maybe come with some good ideas for trying help?

You are in a pickle here I think.

If the wooden window is getting wet or has gotten wet in the past the job of waterproofing it will be very hard. Properly waterproofing a window is tricky and requires a little care and some speciality waterproofing products.

Cutting the window's jamb level with the existing backer board is not a hard thing to do and a good first step. I might suggest you install some kerdi band to the wooden sides of the window with Kerdi Fix as an adhesive.

Before any waterproofing steps are taken the old window should be sanded and check for damage. A product called "Wood Petrifier" could be used to repair soft spots on your window. An oil based priner and good quality marine paint for the window.

Ideally you can tile the inside portions of the window jamb and have a sloped window sill.

What was used as a backer board in the shower? Was any waterproofing measure used in the wet zone?

Hey I have that same bathroom, which I am in the beginning stages of remodeling. Since tub/showers seem to be hated, I am sure I am going to be in the minority. After much thought, we are keeping the tub/shower. Here is our line of thinking. We have a six year old. She takes a bath and this is her bathroom. It was a pain to bathe her in the big tub in the master. Hurts the back to reach in that far down. Since she is young she wonÂt have any issue stepping over the tub to use it as a shower when she is older. I know the general rule is that a house has to a have a tub somewhere, but I really think, if you have a house that will be occupied by young children that a tub is necessary in their bathroom. As a mother I wouldnÂt buy one with just a shower in the kids bathroom and a tub in the master. JMO. As for a step in being ideal for visiting seniors, this is true, but since they are just visiting, we prefer the house to work for the people who are here the majority of the time. robotropolis, you should have good weather. It was gorgeous today! Where are you headed? I'm in the Tampa area. I grew up in Michigan though, so I've experienced plenty of freezing winters. :-) Hollysprings, that plant ledge is deleted in our plan. My thoughts were similar to yours. JenBL, I would not have been against lowering the ceiling if this could have been incorporated in the planning stages. Now, to lower the ceiling to 8 ft. means the ceiling is within 2 inches of the window, which seems to me like it would look low and weird. But maybe I'm wrong? And then how should the rest of the ceiling be framed? Still cathedral starting at 10 ft? Or cathedral but start it at 8 ft? It is really frustrating having this sprung on us last minute. Plus it is hard for me to visualize what it would look like.

We are planning a remodel of a first floor bath, that will now be a mudroom/bathroom when using a small bedroom adjacent to the current bath. I'm using this beginning layout, which shows the bedroom that will remain, the middle space that will be a mudroom and exit to the backyard/garage and the bathroom space that we will be working with is the top room on the drawing with two windows and a radiator on the Backyard/West side of the drawing. As you can see, the hallway entrance from the Dining Room, is narrow and we can get a wheelchair through there, but need room in the projected mudroom to turn to enter the bedroom and bathroom doorways. I think there is enough room there to do that. The doorway to the bathroom is 36" wide. The mudroom will have a stacking washer/dryer and hopefully other cabinetry to accommodate vacuum, broom, laundry basket, etc. We're thinking that there can be either a store bought bench or built in bench under the window in the mudroom extension facing the exit door. And hooks on the wall behind that door. I'd like to plan an attractive bathroom space, that allows for the extra space of a wheelchair, with room under the sink, next to the toilet for transfer and entry into a curbless shower. The window that faces the garage in that bathroom can be replaced with a taller awning window. All the windows are 35" wide double hung at the moment. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I would agree the best think to do is add a bathroom fan, Panasonic makes a great one that turns on/off automatically as needed. You very well could have mildew or mold growth behind the trim or sheetrock. So contacting a mold expert to do some simple testing may be good for your health and future mold damage. Also when buying a bath fan make sure to buy one that is above minimum code they do not work well enough if you don't have a straight run out of the house when venting it.

Unfortunately, your going to have to call a pro now, A Corian Fabricator... Corian shops usually have scrap around to choose from and they can make you a 1 piece integrated window trim kit that will completely wrap the wood and sill. It will cost a couple bux for this bust a great option! Plan, plan plan...
