Is this the right amount of protection?

Or is it overkill? I have Norton Internet Security 2009, I downloaded Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, and I have SuperAntiSpyware 4.25 free edition. I also downloaded SpywareBlaster 4.1, but I'm not sure what I should do with it. It doesn't seem as obvious as the others. Any how, could you tell me if these are the right programs I should be using, or am I missing something, and, if I should use SpywareBlaster, could someone tell me how?

Forgot to say I'm using Windows XP and Internet Explorer on a pc.

It is not always a case of what you are to use , but rather what you have available to you. If your decision is to use the NIS so be it particularly when it is a free promo on a new system. When the limited subscription expires there are other free applications that when bundled will do just as adequate a job. Also, historically NIS is a resource hog and configures itself deep within your system.

The spyware applications you cite are ones which are regularly recommended here at the forum. Keep them updated and available if a problem becomes evident, and for use in a regular maintenance protocol.

I've never used SWB so I will leave that topic to another member.

Howard, I'm going to have to part company with you this time. IMO, you are generalizing the light thing too far here by implying that catts won't scorch without cover if they are acclimated. As the Bishop said to the Actress, it depends. Today it's about 95 here, but the winds have been maybe 50 mph, and have been high all day. Even the phal leaves stay cool with that much wind. It's the heat generated in the leaves that causes the burning. And wind has a cooling effect, reducing the likelihood of a scorch. I can *see* the wind very clearly in the tops of some tall trees in a woods behind my house. Those tree tops are almost always in motion in the morning and late afternoon. However, I've noticed repeatedly that on most hot summer days, any wind dies down a lot around midday and it's perfectly still on my deck during the hottest part of the day. That's when the burning happens, when there's blazing sun and no wind. But that's most of the hottest days at noon. From what I've seen, usually the hotter it is, the less likely there is to be any wind. I've had plenty of scorch on well-aclimated plants that had a leaf tip or two sticking out from the shadecloth on one of those windless days in July or August. And I mean mush-level of scorch. These are plants that went thru all of June in full sun. But those hot windless days... About your rooftop, I read somewhere that the wind doubles every 10 (or 20, I forget) feet off the ground. So my second story deck gets more wind than the ground level, and the tree tops still more than my deck. And your rooftop-- I assume it gets more than the tree-tops. So that accounts for your burn-free rooftop summer. As far as lattice goes, it does cut the average light to 50%, but what actually happens is that there's a darkness/ intense light pattern, with very hot light getting thru the holes. I have seen the checkerboard of red and green on a tall plant like a big hoya that was against the lattice. It might be possible to burn an orchid that way. I was trying to not give total assurance to whitecat that the lattice was enough, tho it does give a lot of protection. About acclimating-- of course we do that. We learned all about that the hard way :P

I personally use floor and table lamps for my everyday lighting. The only time I put on an overhead fixture is to clean or look for something that I need extra light to find. There are the three layers of lighting, so you need to make sure you have enough of all three for the room to look balanced and to serve its' different functions.

How to use just the right amount of solder?

Very little solder is needed for a proper seal. Since the pipe and fitting is almost a perfect fit to begin with, you are simply filling that rermainng space. Here are some steps and tips: Clean BOTH the pipe and fitting with the proper wire tool, steel wool, sandpaper or scotch brite pad. Apply flux to both surfaces with a small (acid) brush. Connect the pieces. Apply your heat to the fitting, this draws the solder into the joint. Try not to overheat, the fitting doesn't need to glow. 50/50 and 95/5 are the most common types of solder. The 50/50 has become harder to find, since it contains lead and not recommended for water lines, but it melts easier and seems to flow more evenly. Works well for heating jobs. After a few seconds of heat, apply your solder, it flows around and into the fitting. If you have that drip at the bottom, just take the brush and sweep it around the connection. When the joint has cooled, wipe with a clean cloth, since the flux is an acid, it's best to remove it when finished. If you look at older connections and see green around the joints, it's the flux reacting with the copper. Hope this helps

Need brand, model name, model number of furnace, evap coil, and outside AC condenser....that first number may be evap coil model number...looks like York but that's your job to provide the info requested, not mine to guess. IMO

I have had Spywareblaster on my computers for a number of years. It runs in the background but does require a manual update perhaps once a week. No idea if it is really useful or not - I stay clean so........

Spywareblaster is an excellent tool in your arsenal, all you have to do with it is hit the update button let it get the updates then hit the enable all protection button so that the shield is green, that is it, do that once a week, it just sits there in the back ground keeping the nasties away.

Yes you have some good programs as long as you do remember to update them then run the full scans about once a week.

As to Norton I personally had issues with it on my computers so do not use it and it was a bear to get off of them but if you have it and like it and want to keep it till it ends feel free, if you decide to change it later be sure you get the Norton removal tool from their website and use it to try to get it all off of your pc.

Just an added note about Norton; I also had it on my computer because it was pre-installed when I bought my HP computer. I did pay the $49.99 after the trail period and when the year was up then I got rid of it! I did download the Norton removal tool, ran it then ran CCleaner. (BTW, The removal was done only after I downloaded Avant and PC Tools firewall.) So far so good and everything seems to run very smoothly, but was I ever suprised at the programs Norton was allowing to "Call Home"!! The Norton firewall built in had been letting alot stuff connect for updates etc. everytime I was on the internet and I didn't even know it until PC Tools was installed. I've come to the conculsion that HP had setup Norton to allow all their preloaded programs to just run amuck *lol*

Personally I'd dump the Norton and take control of your computer instead of letting Norton do it for you.

For the first time, Apple is recommending the use of anti-virus tools to protect Mac systems.
Long something of a phantom menace, strains of malware capable of infecting Mac machines have gradually been increasing in prevalence over recent months. In addition, VXers are making more use of web-based attack and applications specific vulnerabilities to infect PCs whatever their underlying operating system might be.
Windows-specific malware attacks are still orders of magnitude greater than assaults on Mac machines, but the risk to Apple fans is now enough for the Church of Jobs to admit a risk exists.

Sites visited can definitely influence your security. Tread carefully. Sysopt.com has a definitive ranking of software
Personally I depend upon a good firewall ((not MS), run AVG as an antivirus (free), keep spyware blaster and Zone Alarm on the pc. Important don't click on a popup box that appears to be from MS which wants you to download antivirus 2009. If you do there goes your computer.
