Old Computer

Yesterday, I purchased a new computer. Once I am sure I have everything of the old one...what should I do with it? Is it enough to delete everything...and perhaps reformat the hard drive? It is a 6 year old HP with windows XP. It still works great and I could perhaps give it to someone, but would want to make sure all my information is gone from it.

this is the best I know of to clean a hard drive so that you can then donate it or give it away.

if you still have the original recovery discs you would need to give those with it for them to be able to re-load the OS.

Another option is a little program called Eraser. You can choose to remove only those things that you wish. I would definitely remove any personal items, such as documents, pictures, music, website history, address book, bookmarks, etc. Do a good cleanup first using CCleaner or some such utility, and then use Eraser. That way you can leave the Operating System intact.

Oh yeah vista is almost as outdated as xp. You can still find a lot of new ones with windows 7 but the newest will have windows 8 on them. As to transfer of files I too would not let BB touch my computers. It is not difficult to transfer files, pictures, etc. You can plug in a thumb flash drive into the old pc select the files or folders you want to copy to the new one then drag to the flash drive icon or right click on the selected files and select the flash drive to copy to. Windows 7 has a built in feature for doing this easily, you will need to install it to the xp machine but it is pretty easy. What I would like to know is-is there a way I can clear out the old one so that whatever is in there can't be found by anyone else? We really need to ask who is "anyone" and what kind of information they could possibly recover. Are we talking about classified materials that might be used by enemy government? If so, you need to physically destroy the drive. Otherwise, something like Boot and Nuke works just fine. Understand that it destroys ALL the data on the drive including the operating system. If you have the original disc, then you can reinstall Windows or just give it to the new user.

Is it an HP? My son put 6 new hard drives in his HP laptop and they put in multiple motherboards in a 2 year period. It was a lemon from day one and I had to fight tooth and nail to get them to completely replace the computer. I kept escalating until they ran out of people to send me to - had a record of every call and the resulting lack of follow-up. I know every computer mfg has customers who love them and those who hate them. None of them are a bargain in the customer service arena as far as I'm concerned.

As one who often cleans "house"...there's no perfect "yes" or "no" answer to your question. "Yes" you can do it if you examine the contents of each folder and know your system well enough to recognize whether you may need the info contained therein sometime in the future. Some of those old computer files contain old info...or old programs...that are still referred to and needed by your current system to function the way you want it to. Old photo files...old apps...etc. Have I discarded old files? Yes...selectively and without regret. "No" if you're not absolutely sure what's in those files and whether your system...or you...may need the info contained therein at some future point. Generally...I agree with Fudd and azinoh. If you don't need the space then leave well enough alone. If you need the space...proceed with caution.

As I understand it, the Eraser program only securely deletes things you are choosing to delete now. The problem is that your hard drive has many things still on it that you previously deleted normally, and are no longer listed, but could still be recovered from your hard drive. If you want to do a thorough cleanup of your hard drive, ravencajun's suggestion is the secure way to go.

I will try ravens suggestion. But now I have 2 more questions.

1. Does the computer have to be connected to the internet, or can I download the program to a thumb drive and do it that way?

2. I have the recovery disks that I made, would those work, or, my computer is an HP, can I use the recovery partition to reinstall OS?

If you have the recovery CDs for that particular model(by the way, is this a laptop) Then go ahead a do it that way, as it will return the HDD back to when it was taken out of the box.

No, it's not a laptop. It's and HP desktop.

I guess now I am confused. Is it enough to just reformat my hard drive? Seems easier to just do that, then to use programs I am unfamiliar with. I am pretty computer illiterate :-)

Yes simply reformatting the drive - or as Gene notes just using your recovery CDs is good enough for the average person who has nothing to hide. Very few 'normal' folk have the capability or interest in trying to see what you had on there before.

Someone will no doubt be very pleased with that computer as a gift. If it is going to an older person it might be nice if you have the time to find and install a few free games for them.
