Kitchen Renovation...Decisions, Decisions!!!
Comments (5)I recommend instead a Blanco Silgranit sink over the Americast. You can do a search on this forum and find all the enthusiastic lovers of their Silgranit sinks. Especially those with hard water who dislike the water marks on stainless, have converted to Blanco Silgranit sinks. Americast can chip if you bang a heavy pot on it. Silgranit is granite composite, made up of 80% granite, with the durability of granite. It won't chip or scratch. Silgranit comes in several colors from very light to very dark. Since you are thinking of an enameled cast iron sink also, I am assuming you want a sink in the white family. Check out the Silgranit in biscuit, which is a creamy white. I'll link a thread below with pics. If you want a white-white, there was also a thread just posted of a white silgranit sink which I will link. Silgranit sinks come in many sizes. Also think long and hard about whether you want a single-bowl or double-bowl sink. How wide will your sink be? Last comment - be careful about buying a sink from your contractor, only because contractors usually charge a middle-man markup, which they should, since they are doing the work of ordering, etc. But that may make your sink significantly more expensive than if you bought it yourself, especially if you buy online. I'm not saying your contractor is definitely going to do that, but I would ask him how much he will charge you for the sink, and check his price against what it would cost to buy it yourself at a place like Home Depot, or online. Comments (21)Jb1176--Black Diamond and Diamond Black, believe it or not, are not the same. I've seen Black Diamond, Black Pearl, Angola Black, etc. both online and in person and they are even lighter than the Andes. Diamond Black was considered a "rare exotic" but we both loved it so much that we were willing to pay the higher price. [Black Pearl, btw, was a lower price category then Diamond Black @ EXPO...another indication they are not the same.] BethesdaMom2008...actually, if you can get the Verde now it's very inexpensive. They got a great deal on it (they told me why, but I don't think I should repeat it online) and are passing it on to us, if we get it. I don't have the price, but I think they said it would be in price category 1 or 2 (1=least expensive, 7=most expensive)--I'm not positive the exact #. BUT, this is only for this lot. Normally, it's a 6 or 7. I know that at EXPO the Diamond Black was $79/sq ft (category D w/A=least expensive, E=most expensive) and Avanti told me this lot of the Verde was much cheaper than that. If you want the Verde, I would get it NOW and have your fabricator pick it up and save it for you. We've pretty much decided not to go with it...and as of Saturday they had 5 slabs left (including the 3 they set aside for us.) All, I appreciate everyone's suggestions for stoneyards and I am making a note of each place; but we are constrained by who EXPO deals with and right now I only know about Granite Source (Chantilly, VA), Avanti (Frederick, MD), and Universal (Catonsville, MD). But, keep those stoneyard & granite suggestions coming, b/c I'm going to talk to my KD Monday about these other places since Avanti did not have anything I'm in love with...I plan to check Universal next. I know they don't let you pick your slabs (only the lot), but as what I'm looking for is pretty uniform, I may be willing to go along w/that...plus I may talk to my KD about it. She appears to have some pull in a few places (like Avanti! They made an exception in our case b/c we weren't necessarily ready to make a final selection...but they let us come by Saturday anyway!) Avanti, BTW, was great! They were so helpful and friendly--especially Frank & Brian. I highly recommend them for those of you granite, marble, soapstone, and even engineered stone shopping! Note: They hold granite for up to 2 weeks...and they mean it as we looked at some that they told us was not available as it was on hold for someone. [We didn't want it, but it was nice to know that after all the horror stories I've been hearing lately!]...See More99% done - appliances, best and worst choices
Comments (6)lucy, such a tease... would love to see pics. igloo, LOL my miele DW is one of my top favorite items in my new kitchen. after we had it a while it did start "crying" for something... rinse aid I think. I had to look through the manual and punch in a series of codes and it stopped beeping. that was when i realized that it has a VERY sophisticated computer running behind the scenes (which in general scares me... particularly given the quality of repair men these days). Since then, all has been fine. The cutlery rack was a big risk for me. I didn't know if I would like it... had never had anything remotely like it before and I have to say that I love it. Maybe with time you will too? My middle rack is adjustable so can be raised to allow for more room in the bottom rack for tall items but so far I have been fine even with saute pans, stock pots etc going in. My worst appliance so far has been my GE Monogram fridge which has already met three repairment in its short 5 month life. so sad. (but on a happier note is currently running fine. am keeping fingers crossed... wish i went for the subzero which was $2K more... in the long run that doesn't seem like much)....See MoreBest and Worst thing you have ever done.
Comments (41)cyn, thank you sincerely for your posts, as without them, I would not have known that others may have interpreted my post, as you did, and I need to correct that immediately! Firstly, thanks for informing us that the word 'racism' was actually coined in 1902, much earlier than I thought. Since many people obviously behaved in ways in the late 50's/early 60's that were definitely racist, I actually don't recall ever hearing the word 'racism' when I was little, so I guess I thought the words came into usage much later. But more importantly, roarah is precisely correct in understanding that I meant racism was APPARENTLY 'acceptable' meaning it was WRONGLY TOLERATED. Yikes, I hope everyone will now understand (with my apology to those who didn't) that I was not accurate and precise enough with my wording to make that perfectly clear! Also, I guess I need to clarify that I had never heard the 'N' word before, so I did not have a clue what it meant. It was NEVER said in my house by my parents, or said on our street (that's why I mentioned "I did not even know what the 'N' word was, nor did my friends, I'm sure.") I had never heard it until starting school, where it was used in "Eenie, meenie..." before a game was begun, to see who was the starter of the game or "It." So I was meaning that I regretted participating in the schoolyard chant with no knowledge of the word, having never heard it at home or among my little friends on our street. Thanks again cyn, for giving me the opportunity to fully clarify my poor wording....See Moretreasuretheday
