How Hot is Too Hot for Range Oven Exterior?
Comments (9)thanks jakvis for the info. since my granite has not been installed yet- last evening i disassembled my cupboard from the wall that is beside my range, went out and purchased an infrared point and shoot thermometer -- the temp on the exterior sides ranged from 145 degrees to 240 degrees farenheit which is way hot. i can not imagine that being good for the custom painted cabinetry installed beside the range- the temperature on the outside of the wood cabinetry was extremely hot also- the inside of the cabinet was ok, however towards the exterior of the front side of the range was the highest heat and that's where the custom drawer-fronts are. i even had heatshields applied to the cabinetry but they are pretty useless since they are just 1 inch metal strips that also got extremely hot. ugh, i'm hoping someone knows of a way to rectify this problem. thanks again for all the help....See MoreBlue Star oven failure
Comments (39)I had a sudden oven failure in my older 30" RNB, and happened to see the obvious cause. I don't have a wiring diagram, but the circuit is so simple that it's not really necessary. The line from the plug goes along the side of the range to the control knobs, spark unit and igniters. It delivers 120v to the thermostat. When the oven or broiler is switched on, the thermostat passes that 120V back to the thermovalve, which in turn sends it down to the appropriate oven or broiler igniter, which in turn connects directly to the neutral wire from the plug. My range's problem was caused by a misrouting of the wires that bring power up to the oven igniter. Instead of having been passed through the big hole that's obviously provided for them at the front of the range, they were pinched between the side panel and frame of the range, squeezing them very tightly. Finally the insulation degraded enough to cause a short, with a moment of sparking that made the location of the problem obvious. The short damaged the internal circuitry in the thermovalve, which is not protected by a fuse, so the thermovalve is shot. It only hurt the oven-side circuitry; the broiler, which is handled by the same valve, is fine. It's conceivable that such a short would knock out the thermostat, but in my case it didn't. I will have to replace the thermovalve and the wires going to the igniter, rerouting them to avoid a repeat performance....See MoreDoes your BlueStar oven singe cabinets next to it?
Comments (17)Thanks crl for the link! The cabinets are standard depth frameless. I don't doubt that moving the stove forward would help, but the stove installation specs said zero clearance. It's already set forward the thickness of the backsplash. It's odd that others are have the same installation (crcollins) with the cabinet door overlapping the edge of the stove, and they don't have this issue. I'm amazed deb's cabinet maker replaced the door. I guess I won't keep my hopes up and contact them as well as Bluestar next....See MoreIs your Blue Star Range door too hot?
Comments (2)There are quite a few posts on this issue. I have an RNB and the door is warm, but I don't find it too hot, though I wouldn't rest my hand on it for any period of time. While I haven't measured temperatures, my guess is that the outside of my weber grill is much hotter. Is there a dealer near you, ask them to turn it on and check. No matter what stove you buy, once the oven cavity is 450, the door will be warm to the touch, so will the outside of a tea kettle, etc. Often, if an oven has a self clean mode, it will have more insulation and airspace on the door, so that with the oven at 450 , the outside of the door will feel cooler than a non self clean, but when you run the self clean mode, the interior of the oven will go over 850, and the door will be hotter than it was when the oven is used for normal baking...See Morethull
