how to transfer floppy's to cd

I want to transfer about 300 family photo floppy's to cd. I've got Roxio Creator DE9 cd burner and using win.Xp with a floppy drive.

Is there an easy way to do this?

I'm in my late 70's and not as sharp as I once was, so not too complicated please.

If you have room on the hard drive, I'd first copy the photos from the floppies to the hard drive and organize them however you want, then put them on CD.

There's probably an option in Roxio along the lines of Create Data CD. That's the option you want to use for this.

What's a floppy? ( LOL )

Those are somewhat low res pictures I aassume.
As I remember, 1.44 mb on a floppy?

Do it soon. You may not be able to buy a floppy drive in the near future.

I am always amazed when people say they have loads of photos or music that they do not want to lose or cannot replace yet have never backed up these valuables. If your hard drive fails tomorrow you have a very real problem. You are not alone in this and I am not trying to be mean spirited but if you fail to look after you and your possessions then who will? For less than $50 you can buy a name brand DVD-RW and for under $20 you can buy 100 blank DVDs. You can buy a lesser amount of blanks of course, that is a choice you can make. The DVD will come with software you install to use it. Or if you already have blank CDs you could use those in the DVD burner. If you back some of that stuff up and remove it from this computer it may well run faster because you will have more free space on the hard drive for the swap file to work better. Does your activity light come on frequently and stay on for long periods? If so this is an indication the swap file is have a problem. Then if you really want to get carried away you can visit Big Lots where they have (or did recently in the Buffalo, NY store) CD or DVD labels and the software to create your own labels for $10 or $11. Another option would be to install this hard drive as a slave in the new computer you intend to buy. You would need to check that there are compatible data connections in the new computer. Older hard drives are IDE or ATA but the newer and faster technology is SATA.

I think for the SanDisk to work on Win98SE you will need to download a driver and install on the 98 machine. SanDisk Windows 98 Driver Windows Vista has the Easy Transfer Wizard, you can read more about it here As far as transfering from one computer, you'll need a RJ45 connector wire and plug it into the ethernet card on each computer. They do make a Easy Transfer Cable. This is a special USB cable that is designed to work with Windows Vista and Windows Easy Transfer and you just connect USB to USB. Programs usually don't work if you transfer them, they need to be installed from the CD or a setup.exe installer. If you're lucky, the programs may have the setup-installer inside the folder of the program. Who knows whether they will install on Vista because of there age. If they do install and not work, you may be able to right click the program icon and choose compatibly mode for Win98.

RW type disks, whether it be CD or DVD, should only be used for short term storage. Either type disks will let you transfer files to a different computer. If you use the RW type disks you can edit the files on the disks. If you use the R type disks you can copy the files to a computer, then edit the files, and then put them on another disk, R or RW. RW type disks are not a reliable storage media. If you are just moving a file from one computer to another you shouldn't delete the original until until the copy is safely on the other computer. If you are just wanting to back up files on your computer, use the R type disks and make a new copy periodically. If you have a small number of files to back up consider using a web service to store them or get a USB jump drive. (very handy to have). Whatever backup solution you choose remember, it won't work if you don't use it. Pooh Bear

THANK YOU! This looks like something that would do it although I'm not understanding how the gadget plugs into the two ports at the back of the old Panasonic (perhaps it just needs another cord with the red and white plugs at each end). I also did more web searching and came up with the Ion u-Record Music Archiver at Think Geek I'm not sure how it works...as it too just seems to connect the computer with the old music outfit, but this one seems to need software installed and I'm wondering if it is for more complex stuff than I'm trying to do. Has anyone used this? As I said before, I'm not very computer savvy (I'm from the old LP era) and appreciate being able to do this without a lot of frills and hassles. I have 398 MHz 256 MB of Ram on this computer.

I'm showing capacity 74.4 GB . Used space 12.3 GB and free space 62.0 GB.

I have no idea what all this means except that my pie still has lots of pink and I DO know that means lots of empty space just don't know if this is enough for all these pictures.

I know what you mean about what are floppy's? I asked the grandkids and great-grandkids for help and they had no idea what I was talking about. When I showed them my floppy's they Wanted to know how to put that in their laptop's.
Guess I'm getting older by the day but I won't give up trying to learn. lol
Thanks to both of you for the quick and easy to understand response and hope I can get this done. That is my project for the day. Probably more like a week or month. lol

If you have 300 floppies of 1.44 MB apiece, and they are completely full, that's less than 1/2 of a GB, total. That would take up less than 1% of the free space that's available on your hard drive. You would need to have more than 50,000 floppies to transfer before you had to worry about filling up your hard drive!

Wow, that's amazing!! This computer age really is mind boggling. I'm glad I could get in on some of it.

The things I don't understand I can always count on nice people like all of you to help me.

Marie you have a long winded task ahead of you, each floppy can be counted on to take 2 minutes at least. So pace yourself accordingly. As stated you should create a folder on your computer hard drive to copy them all onto. Then drag them all to the CD player using Windows Explorer to burn. If you need detailed instructions just holler. One of us will give the the howto in simple to follow terms.

I went through this exact same task a couple of years ago, and it does take a long time. But just keep at it, and you'll get the task done. By the way, I had to buy an external floppy drive to get the task done since my XP computer did not come with a floppy drive. Now I have a nice stack of "coasters" and a floppy drive that I'll probably never use again.

And, I understand that CDs and maybe DVDs are on the way out, too!! So, in addition to having CDs of my pictures, I have them on my hard drive and also on an external drive.
