Congrats! Glad to see you have made it this far. We are actually pouring our slab today. Charlie and everybody at OBCH have been great. Any tips besides be patient?

Make sure the mortar they use is the same as what you want. If its colored mortar make sure it's mixed properly when they are bricklaying. The mortar is frequently a bigger difference in how things look than similar bricks.

Are you sure you want a flush joint vs the traditional raked joint (or even rolled/scraped) ??? Flush joints look kind of commercial.

rachel-you need to email me. I have several suggestions. Especially on which framer not to use. Who did you use for foundation? We used Pace and they were awesome. Congrats on the pour.

anthem-yes we want a flush joint as we are going for an old, antique look. I can't say that I've ever seen a flush joint on anything commercial in this part of the country. What part of the country are you in?

Flush joints are not the recommended joint for an exterior application due to the risk for water penetration. Have you considered a grapevine joint? That would give it an older look (at least early American, I'm not sure about "old, antique") and provide better water penetration resistance. I've attached a link to the BIA guidelines. We're using a grapevine mortar joint on our house (it's an historical reproduction) with a brick that is similar to the one shown above, and IMHO, it looks perfect! I love your brick...gorgeous!

Like I said, are you sure you want flushed ? The picture you gave looks to be a concave or rounded out mortar joint and not a flush joint. Here is a picture from old virginia brick describing each joint :

I am from Virginia, where there is a lot of brickwork and in the general area where a lot of the best brick is made (NC and VA).

txgal06 that brick looks great. Do you mind sharing what color and brand it is? It is just the color on my monitor for what I've been looking for to bring to the architectural review board and see if they'd ok for a porch floor and steps.

It is called Tanglewood and I am not certain of the maker. It is not Acme, General Shale nor any nationwide manufacturer.

I don't see any water drainage for the brick. Water will get in behind the brick and I hope you at least have a 1" air gap behind it. Hopefully it is a detail that is not visible.

The gap is there as well as wall ties, weep holes, etc.
