Windows 7 Question

I've been computing a long time and am new to Windows 7. Over the years one thing I did a lot was right click on start,click on explore and for many things, use that list showing all the drives and folders. I can't seem to find it anywhere in Windows 7. Does anyone know if they got rid of that option or is it that I'm looking in the wrong place? In the past it was on all Windows versions including XP.Not sure about Vista.

Interesting. I have Windows 7 Professional. When I right click the Start button 2 options appear. "Properties" and "Open Windows explorer". Don't you have the Explore folder on your task bar by default? Mine is there but as I use it a lot I may well have done that myself, the brain does not keep up with the fingers these days.

You can click Start, All programs, Accessories then right click on Windows explorer and click to pin to the task bar.

I get the same as Owbist on Windows 7 Home Premium. And the explorer folder is on the task bar.

When you speak of upgrading "my Dell computer", you're not speaking of installing an upgrade over top of XP are you? If so, I misunderstand, so disregard the rest of my post. :) So I'm assuming you intend to purchase a retail version of Windows 7 and do a clean install. In the first line of your post you mention 512 MB of RAM, a date, and then 2.00 GB of RAM. Does that mean it now has 2.00 GB of RAM or maybe 2 1/2 GB of RAM? Either way, I'm no expert but I'd think 512 MB is less than enough, but either 2 or 2 1/2 GB would be fine. I don't know much about Office, but wasn't Office 2003 was the last version that had the old style menu, before the newfangled ribbon came along. According to this, your Office 2002 would not be compatible but according to this, Office 2003 would be. Would your 2002 macros work in 2003? I don't know. Would it be worth the expense of buying a retail version of Windows 7, as well as Office 2003(or at least Word)? To me, probably not, to you, only you can decide. Personally, since it works, I'd probably just continue using it. Continue running a good real-time AV, occasionally scanning with a couple on-demand malware tools(Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware come to mind), use Firefox or Chrome(lie detected), using the WOT add-on(trusting it somewhat less than fully), and being careful what I open(email) and what I install. From my experience with W 7 & 8...I would google Classic Shell and see if it is compatible with W 8.1, if it is I would go with it. I think every computer I have had except ME has been faster than the last one. Classic Shell is a great software that converts the W8's into a computer more like the version we are use to. My Acer laptop is very fast and the monitor part moves to comfortable positions for your vision, especially if you have mid range vision. It converts from a laptop to a tablet, a very large tablet.

The only other thing I could do is look at a hijackthis log and see what's running on the computer. Click Here to download HJTInstall.exe Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop. Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop. Right click the Hijackthis Icon and Run as Adminstrator if you use Vista or Windows 7 By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Click on Install. It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop. Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis. Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad. Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" and Paste the entire contents of the log into your next post. DO NOT use the AnalyzeThis button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted. DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what HJT lists will be harmless or even required by your Operating System.

Thanks everyone. mikie, that sounds a little complex. If necessary, I'll try it, though. An update... last night after posting here, I decided to try to get those Windows updates redone and out of 'stall' mode. So, what happened was the latest version of Windows 10 updated - it was a long one, took about an hour. After that, my computer is working like I think it should as far as speed with no lags. I haven't used it enough to see if that "HD Intel Graphics Display driver has stopped working and has recovered" popup happens again. So far it hasn't. While doing the Windows 10 update, I could see it was installing new drivers for quite some time, so I'm hoping that will resolve the issue. If not, it looks like I'll have to return it because it's really annoying to continually see this popup whenever I try to navigate the internet. I'll post back to report what happens. Thanks to you all for your help.

I hate that too I am so used to the type of windows explorer we have had in past versions where we can go through the tree and find what we are looking for. Windows 7 has a very abbreviated version and has libraries which I am NOT fond of.

It also makes it hard for the security help forums to have people find file paths as they have in the past with xp or earlier versions.

I have found the windows 7 forums and their tutorials very helpful

one of the first things I did to windows 7 was go in and change the theme to the windows classic so things look more familiar, googling make windows 7 look like xp led me to several good tips and tricks.

Thanks for the input.I do have what they are calling Explorer but it doesn't contain half the info of the previous versions of Windows. I could easily access anything on my computer from all the drives to every file or folder using Explorer. I had hoped it was somewhere or other and I just hadn't found it yet.
