looking for a more 'modern' forum for homes built with different

Most of you have probably already decided what type of home you will be building.

I want to look at alternative building- maybe shipping containers, pre-fab, but any sites I have found are either a couple years old, or are 'fallen' sites- meaning they are no longer in existance.

With todays interest in recycling, isn't there a greater choice of forums/companies/whatever to look at? I don't seem to find any- which maybe says we really are not interested due to the fall of housing- too many foreclosures to buy..why be interested in being innovative??

If anyone has knowledge of shipping container housing that it currently active- or any other known active places to 'talk' to people, I would love to know! I don't want to do a boring stick-built house again...

I don't know of any forums - perhaps Dwell magazine or website might have helpful information.

I think the idea behind transitional style is that you end up with something looking like it evolved naturally, rather than being chosen to fit a certain design era. Some of the "silvery" colors look pretty bad with golds, but others look fine. Similarly, a lot of Georgian design is pretty simaple in lines, as is a lot of modern, so there are probably a lot of things you can find that are at the modern end of transitional, but also look good with the more traditional. Why not bring home some knobs and pulls you like, and while you're checking them with your kitchen finishes, check them with the other rooms you want to tie in? Check the color, shape, details, etc., and see what you like the looks of. If you're bringing your traditional rooms into your new style it doesn't matter if they're supposed to go together, just if you like the looks. Keep a sample of all of the ones that you like with your rooms and with each other, and only return the ones that look bad. (That is, keep everything that looks good, not just the one(s) you use for your kitchen.) Do the same with paint colors, fabrics, etc. And make yourself a pouch or small box or binder to hold all your samples. Now you have a reference point for all the touches you want to do bring into your new design philosophy. Start small. Choose some candlesticks in the style and finish of one of your knob samples and put them in the vicinity of the gold mirror. Buy a throw or a couple of decorative pillows in one of the colors you want to introduce that looks good with your upholstery. Paint a wall or two. It doesn't take a lot to make a big difference. You don't have to change the brass bail pulls on a Georgian highboy. They're appropriate to the piece. Instead, put a striped runner on it in red and gold (if that looks okay with your decor) because the red brings in the wood tone and the gold brings in the brass. Put a good sized modern shaped, brushed pewter vase on top with some fresh flowers, interesting twigs, cattails, or whatever, in it, and maybe a small silver and marcasite box, and another small doodad to make a grouping. These are just the for instance things, to say it doesn't have to be a big redo to get the effect you're looking for.

Cpartist, so even my front door needs to open out? I haven’t seen one house in Florida custom or not with all doors opening out. Are you sure? Because where I am, every single new build has all doors opening out. Read up on best practices for wind resistance. Also we are customizing the interior floor plan to suit our needs. When you are 4 blocks from the beach, something’s need to give...smaller lot, more narrow home, no side load garage, etc. I'm 3 blocks from the water on a narrow 9100 square foot lot in a downtown SW Florida city. The other houses in my new build neighborhood are on smaller 6100 square foot lots. Every single new build house here has windows in the kitchen and is light and bright throughout. As poorly designed as most of the houses in this small development are, they did manage to build with windows on at least two walls in all major public rooms and in the master bedrooms. Which floor plan are you using? The Cordova? I ask because it looks like your interior will be dark. The kitchen has no windows and are on the interior of the house. Plus how will your dryer vent since it's not near an outside wall. A fox, we will have French doors in the back of the house for a cross breeze. For cross breezes, you need for it to open up between the two with it being no deeper than 1-2 rooms deep. These homes show rooms 3 rooms deep. The screen issue has been a question for us, and we were told in Florida, they don’t use screen doors. No we don't use screens because doors open out. We are planning on 6 light French doors to align with the 4 light front door w/side lights. Also, we were intrigued by the look and indoor/outdoor living, and it makes our home different than the rest of the same floor plans in the subdivision. This room will be our formal dining room, so the door will not be open that often. The depth of the patio is a consideration, too. So the study will become the dining room? I assume you'll have a walkway from the kitchen through the pantry? Even if you are not in Miami-Dade county, you may get a lower insurance rates if you have impact windows and doors. Similar comment regarding roof lines. Hip vs. gable Exactly!

You could certainly paint your Hardie siding. I wouldn't replace perfectly good siding just for aesthetic reasons. And that style, while appealing, will also quickly date a home. Please don't do what everyone else is doing, that gets old really quick. Your house is lovely. But I agree, the color could use a "jump." Have you looked at navy homes? It would look fabulous with the white trim and your porch... Oh, and paint your downspouts to match the siding.

I don't like the dark paint. With your light roof and light stone it looks like someone tied a dark green ribbon around the top of your house. A lighter color would be an improvement. I dislike the planters and would remove them if possible. I would remove the rail if it is not needed for safety. It is probably original but it makes the door seem inaccessible You can buy a full view storm door and paint it and the house door the same color. I love your lamp post. Do you have a porch light? I made an amateurish image of a lighter house with no planters. Do you think the stone is original?

I think what you are seeing is that those were fads in green building. Prefab is always more expensive than stick built - if you want an efficient house, prefab isn't it - SIPs, ICF, or well designed stick built are all more efficient. Containers are metal boxes and need a lot of work to be habitable.

And how you build a house has nothing to do with if a house is boring - that is about design primarily.

Kayak...i want to find a forum. I am not a designer.
Archie.. I love!! Dwell! That is where i find most things/styles i like. But want to finf site where i can talk to people about what they did/didnt do.. Dont want to just read...
I agree that alot of 'green' sites are horribly expensive. That is major reason why i want forum.

A shipping container seems like it would be a bit extreme, but I have seen homes built from tires, bottles, etc. The nice thing is...it still looks like a 'real' home, when it's done! Dennis Weaver (I believe) had a beautiful home, built from tires, covered in stucco and it was quite charming. Just my opinion, but the green homes that bring innovation and good style together...are the ones that will last and become popular with a larger consumer base :)

I saw a shipping container home(I guess you would call it a home) on that reality show "Doomsday Preppers" on the Learning Channel or maybe the Discovery Channel. That one didn't look all that "efficient" to me but I don't think that was what they were trying to achieve! LOL!

A few of the responses seem a bit hostile or negative to me.

I am of the same mind as the OP and have always strived to investigate different and new ways to use materials and technologies in my building projects. We used SIPS and a concrete floor when people told us we were wasting our money. I think this website is sorely lacking in a place to discuss alternative building methods and energy efficient options for home building.

It is one of those areas where you need to discuss, read and digest all the info so you can make the best informed decision that works for you. I could actually point you to some wonderful container homes that easily have resale value but this is not really a forum geared towards those who revel in the different.

That's where you are wrong. This isn't a forum that revels in the different for difference's sake. However, the unique and innovative will always be celebrated, if it is cost effective (and sometimes even not) and if it utilizes the principals of good design. Too often though, "alternative building methods" are neither cost efficient or well designed. They are too often the flip side of the coin of an architect who designs some pie in the sky gorgeous design exercise of a structure that is impractical to live in.

I've seen a shipping container "house". It was poorly insulated, noisy, and frankly hideous. It didn't have to be any of that, but the builder was so focused on "re-use" above all else that he forgot basic construction and design principals. And that, in a nutshell is most alternative construction. Too much of a religion and too little of science and the arts.

You have actually proven my point. Instead of being interested in the projects and building techniques that are good and work you tell me that it is a religion not a science.

This forum is more main stream and there is nothing wrong with that, it is just not that conducive to actually discussing the pros as well as the cons of alternative methods. People are too quick to shut down what they are not use too.

try googleing Joel Egan and HyBrid Architecture - they work with shipping containers in Seattle. That might lead you to some other forum or resource.
