cell phone monitoring..

I guess this must be a computer they are talking about, so will ask here-My neighbor and her son/daughter in law came over this evening and asked me a question- boy they should have gone to someone who has much more knowledge than myself.... Anyway, there are twin 17 year old girls- one seems very nice/outgoing, the other sullen and sneaky. My neighbor and son/DIL want to 'trace' the sullen one with a cell phone gadget that can listen to her conversations both on the phone and off the phone if the phone is close by. I have heard about this a couple years ago- it just seems too scary that people who want to do damage to the US can use this stuff legally... Anyway, I think they should just talk/spend time with the girls, but I am not family, so I can't get in the middle... Anyway, I did Google this, and I guess it is legal.Has anyone done this? Do these gadgets really work? (I think it would be a blast to do something funny to a friend/co-worker/family member).

I'm not a lawyer, nor do I play one of TV but I believe electronic eavesdropping can be illegal in many circumstances. I'd suggest not getting involved in that.

There are GPS devices that can track the location of a vehicle. I've seen them advertised for people who suspect a spouse of cheating and used car dealers use them to track cars of buyers with poor credit. I also believe there is a way to use the GPS function of a cell phone to track it's location (I think at least one of the cell phone companies advertised this as a "parental control" function).

yes most of the smart phones now do have the GPS location in them so that the location of the phone can be traced.
I am sure there is a device that can do what they want but I sure would not even go there. What they need is communication real face to face communication with the child.

But I also think there are exceptions to the exception. Like taking a kid to a kid movie? If the whole theater is kids and their parents, I'm much less concerned about the little one sitting still and or being quiet. No one else is, and I fully expect a lot of the leeway that I am giving. Cell phones/laptops are standard business practice at meetings. I cannot see cell phones disappearing at meetings. Cannot. It's only gotten more prevalent over the years, and I think you're trying to fight a rising tide expecting it to be limited to what you find "acceptable". Now none of my associates who would bring a phone to a meeting and read emails before/after a meeting, would bring it to lunch and text all lunch long. Maybe you're not so lucky, and that's the problem? Not here. Honestly, I really don't understand the mindset of the whole cell phones are evil thing. People have always carried on conversations. For some reason, it is absolutely acceptable when the participants are standing nearby, face to face. But put a cell phone in one of the participant's hands and have the other person be somewhere else, and it's evil/wrong/bad manners??? Cell phone conversations being overheard is becoming more acceptable, and less seen as bad manners any more. I never saw it being a problem, except when someone couldn't hear and they were yelling. Which has gone by the wayside too, so maybe that's why it's more tolerated. I truly don't understand cell phones being in business settings as being wrong. Just don't get it. Even if I didn't have a son to watch. I saw colleagues using their phones before I had one and it didn't bother me then. I really am beginning to wonder if this is a generational thing?

It depends on the phone and the carriers. There's a number of different types of service out there too. For instance different carriers use different frequencies (CDMA, PCS, GSM, etc) SIM cards are suggestive of GSM technology used by Tmo and ATT. If you're looking to use prepaid service you can sometimes use the phones but won't always have all the features. If you're looking for a contract service, then as cautioned before, beware of costs to change. Often the smallest thing will extend your contract. For instance, if you get a new phone, you generally get a new (extended) contract with hefty cancellation fees. You'll have to get more info from the companies, but generally speaking, Tmo will not be interchangeable with Virgin and Verizon. Tmo & AT&T are more likely to be options. Probably not answering your question, but not an easy question to answer!

We have 2 phones with Virgin Mobile, each phone cost under $20. I am on an old plan where we pay $20 every 3 months. I mainly have the phone for emergencies/long distance as I detest talking on the phone and we have a land line. I do have an ipod touch for many of the fun things at home but if there is no wifi when I am out and about, I figure I can live without. When my phone needs to be replaced, I will be looking at Trac phones or the like prepaid because it is pointless for me to pay even $20 a month for the limited amount I use it and my current plan is no longer available. However, I do feel that I need a phone as I live in a rural area on poor roads and have a daughter with diabetes so if there is a problem, I want to be contacted. DH's phone we pay $20 a month for. I cannot remember what it includes but he uses his a bit more for work and never uses all of his minutes. I should also add that my 16 yo and 13 yo do not have phones. When the 16 yo starts driving, we may have a prepaid family phone for emergencies or he may be able to borrow mine, not sure yet but it is not a huge necessity in their lives yet. What you are contemplating doing is prosecutable in many States and possibly federally, and you've just posted your intent in a public forum. Good luck with that when it blows up on you.

This isn't any of my family- no kids here.. My neighbor just asked, and I Googled it- didn't find much.
But...the girl who is the not so good one just turns off the GPS on her phone-
If it was my kid I guess I'd just lock em up in a closet and let em out when they turn 21!
(No nasty remarks now-just kidding- there aren't any kids to lock up now anyway...darn). Not populating the planet sounds better and better sometimes..
