Can one make their own system restore date?

tech tweeked my font back to normal, and a couple days later this annoying little box comes up with program not responding, click now to end. I do that, but I know the program should be responding, I am just in email, and shutting down.

This occured before a system restore date on the program, and since the tech changed my font. Wondering if I can make my own date for a restore? Not sure I explained well, but asking anyway. XP is OS, everything fine but this.

I am always in muddy water it seems. As always appreciate any insight.

If I understand you Shaddy you wish to restore to back before the issue of 'not responding' but after the tech did his work. If there is a restore point created in between those 2 dates then yes you can. However if there is none then you cannot restore to that time frame.

This is why I like to suggest (but often forget to do myself sadly) that people should create a restore point before making changes to their computer. Then if those changes do not create the desired effect the computer can be restored to before the changes made.

On the issue of 'not responding' take a look in your Event viewer next time this happens. To do so
click Start
click Control panel
click Administrative Tools
click Event viewer

Now you have a new window, look on the left site and click on System so you can view the results in the right side. Scroll down if needed looking for red error marks or yellow warning marks. Double click on any of these for further information. Much of it you will not understand but there will be a link there and if you click that you will be taken to the Microsoft site and hopefully an answer to your problem. If not then report back here with the error number and any pertinent comments they make.

owbist, there is nothing there for red error marks, or yellow warnings, so I will just keep clicking the box and let it go, not a big deal, just annoying. But I guess as long as I am on this, why are there sometimes 2 days in a row that system restore can be done, as boldened on the calender, and sometimes over a week and nothing? Is this something we should be aware of and watchful of?

well you do need to be updating your IE to IE 7 at least very soon because support for 6 is ending or has already ended and you will be with out security updates for it so that is critical. I would remove aol then try to re-install it if you just insist on having it, I try to steer people off of aol because it is such a problem child and it really is not needed. as zep said we need more info on exactly what is happening when it is happening and what error messages you are getting.

Here is the skinny, Get yourself to the site raven suggested. If you are infected with System Check it is important that you do not delete any files from your Temp folder or use any temp file cleaners. This is because when the infection is installed it will delete shortcuts found in various locations and store backups of them in the %Temp%\smtmp folder. It does this so that you when try to launch a program from your start menu, none of your shortcuts will appear and thus making you think that your computer has a serious problem. Therefore, you do not want to delete any of the files in your Temp folder as it will remove the backups that we will use later in the guide to restore your Windows Start Menu. To make matters worse, recent variants of this family have been know to install the TDSS or ZeroAccess rootkits as well. These rootkits will attempt to stop you from using security programs that may help you to remove this infection. Good luck. Joe

One somewhat popular problem that xp had/has with restore is with an improper shut down it can corrupt the last restore point. Sometimes Undoing the last restore point is the fix, but if its a corrupted restore date before the last restore its unlikely you can fix it short of turning off system restore, which deletes all of the restore points and then turn it back on ...turning on after a fresh reboot is a good idea. But that's not going to fix your internet connection. What happens with your internet? Dial up , DSL, cable ? It should be easy to make a new dialer or network connection from the steps usually on your isp support pages. But if the problem is configurations within a dsl or cable modem that's a different dohicky to check configurations or reconfigure.

Hi, everyone (ravencajun and Zep too. :) ) I meant to reply last evening but ran out of time. The other situation ravencajun is referring to was an extremely nasty rootkit. That does not appear to be the situation here. msjean, I suggest you reinstall System Restore. I checked the instructions presented at a number of sites but found the best information is at the site referenced below. Bert Kinney is a Microsoft MVP and a respected expert. His instructions are clear and the most complete. (Note, in particular that there are multiple locations provided for the needed i386 folder.) It appears that the easiest method is to type or paste the command shown in the instructions at Bert's site (rundll32.exe advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection C:\Windows\Inf\sr.inf) into the Start/Run box and pressing enter. Since you have Service Pack 3 installed, you should have either the i386 folder or the C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 folder mentioned in the list Bert provided. See "How to Reinstall System Restore in Windows XP" by Bert Kinney at http://bertk.mvps.org/html/reinstall.html and let us know the results. Notes: A. You should log on to the Administrator account to perform this. B. You may need to show hidden folders: 1. Click Start > My Computer. 2. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options. 3. Click the View tab. 4. Locate and uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types. 5. Locate and uncheck Hide protected operating system files. 6. Can't help on the restore thing Shaddy, I know very little about it and only ever used it once myself. But you can create them yourself as often as you wish. When I create one I add a comment so I know what I was attempting if things went wrong and I had a need to restore
