Track lighting as vanity lighting - anyone??

I am having a hard time finding vanity lights that I really like for my master bath. I have plenty of lighting in the bathroom with recessed lights, but of course need a vanity light. Has anyone used track lighting? Or am I crazy for even going there? If you have, did it work well? Also, pictures would be appreciated. Thanks so much, Jeanie

No, not crazy at all... or rather, if you are then so am I.
That's exactly what I just had installed in my main bathroom last week.
Couldn't find any vanity lights that worked with the look I was going for, (sleek & modern) so I used two 3-track bars over the two sinks.
The electrician phoned to tell me the lights I'd bought were supposed to go on the ceiling, not the wall, but everyone who's seen them thinks they look great. They fit the room much better than any 'bathroom' fixtures would have.
Another big advantage is that they swivel to point in the direction you want.

I got the idea from an Ikea showroom. It opened up a lot of options to realize that you don't HAVE to use lights only in the room they're designed for.
If they suit the decor no buyers will even notice they're in the 'wrong' room.

You can do anything you want in your home, but it may come back to haunt you if you plan on reselling. Most buyers will think that is a bit crazy.

There's generally no problem mounting standard track on a wall rather than the ceiling. I'm not sure about the best way to connect the track pieces at right angles to each other, as they go around a corner from one wall to the next. I don't think I'd try this with the monorail-type tracks that are designed to hang down from the ceiling. I haven't seen a product line specifically designed to be used this way. --Jon

larke, that's a great idea to call local galleries on what they use. I definitely would want something simple, but aesthetically pleasing like the lighting in an art gallery. I am also a little worried about it looking odd. Honestly, I am not a big fan of track lighting on beams. While my beams are not terribly spectacular right now, they were one of the things we liked about the home and I feel like putting the track on them would take away from the beams. wi-sailorgirl, do you have any pictures of your lighting on one of your exposed trusses? Maybe I just haven't ever seen it done properly. I definitely would not want to do just regular track lighting. I would do something intended for the wall that stands out from the wall a few inches. I've seen some in an office building that looked fairly simple but pretty. I am really struggling to find pictures, but here are some ideas of the types of wall-mounted track lighting that I am considering.

I had those type of lights in my kitchen too. I broke the plastic panels early on with the mop handle! I ended up leveling the ceiling and installing recessed lighting. I like the pendant you posted. Will it provide as much light as those larger fluorescents and if not do you need the bright lighting? LED bulbs provide great light, and many options exist for color and brightness. I've always liked track lighting - but concerned that it might be dated? Perhaps you'll get more opinions on that. Best luck!

Is it just the typical "three lights in a bar above the vanity" kind of thing that you don't like? What about using the tracks with pendant lights, or simply pendants without the track? Sconces on either side of the mirror, maybe?

Thanks to each of you. Bill, this is our retirement home so hopefully resale is left to the kids..LOL.
jemr, I am so glad to hear someone has actually done this and are so happy with the look. In my head, I was thinking I would like the look.
hudsonleigh, it isn't that I don't like "three lights...", it just doesn't seem to be the look for the room. I was thinking of the track lighting. Sconces won't work as the "hole" is already wired above. Good thought, though.

I've been trying to find a long (4') vanity fixture to replace the one that's been there for 25 years but the existing one is "ceiling-mounted" to a top rail that is part of the cabinet installation around the vanity. Nearly all vanity lights are designed to be wall-mounted and long fixtures seem to cost a fortune. So I've been looking at IKEA led track lighting like Tidig or Barometer as possibly workable solutions at a fraction of the price.
