what dishwasher should i invest in?

What is the best dishwasher? I want stainless steel to match kitchen but don't care if it's the top of line. I just want it to wash, be quiet, not leak and not have to be repaired often. I need reliability. Would like DW drawers but they don't get such great reviews. Have looked at Consumer Reports but I don't know how accurate the evaluation is. I've had a GE profile for 14 years. It's been ok. Repairs have been for door springs and a little leaking. It makes a lot of noise but has cleaned my dishes adequately if I prewash. It's still chugging along but black plastic trim is cracking. Am ready for something a little nicer. What should I buy? Thanks, mameie

When our kitchen was remodeled 4 years ago, we went with GE Profile on everything (expect the Fridge, which we got a KitchenAid counter depth). Anyway, the GE Profile dishwasher had about 8 repairs in the 1.5 years that we owned it, as the water pump kept going out (making loud noise when filling) and the metal glide arms for the upper rack kept jamming up. After all the repairs, we talked to the Manager of Lowes and they agreed to accept it back for a refund, which we used to buy an Electrolux wave-touch dishwasher. That unit lasted about 6 weeks. It was quiet and cleaned well, but there was a few problems. The two door springs on the side of the unit were quite big and would rub on the wood cabinet on either sides (even though the space was the 24" standard). Also, the side-mounting hardware kept scratching the sides of the stainless door finish. Three different install/service companies came out to see if anything could be adjusted, and it couldn't. So 6 weeks later that went back for refund.

After doing a lot a research, I decided to go with Miele, but had to wait due to some other expenses. Three weeks ago I purchases the Miele Diamante G2143SC for $1399 and had it installed due to the 20% Florida appliance rebate that was going on at that time.

To touch on your post....
It is has a Clean Touch Stainless Steel exterior so that it looks good and resists fingerprints.
It is very quiet (more so than the GE and Electrolux).
Everything that I have put in it has come out clean, no prewash is required.

Now that I've owned it for 3 weeks I can tell that the build-quality is quite high and is designed to last.
So with the 3 brands that I've owned, I go with Miele again, and wish I would have know about them 4 years ago so I could have got one in the first place.

If the Miele Diamante is more than you'd want to spend ($1399), you can go with their introductory Inspira G2142SC model for about $1250.

I vote for Method Smarty Dish Dishwasher Tablets. They were a big improvement over my previous Cascade. I used to love Cascade, but they changed the formula after the ban on phosphates a few months back, and I don't like Cascade anymore. I like that the Method Smarty Tablets are non-scented. Also, it has proved very effective for cleaning my dishes (I never rinse the dishes before putting in the DW; leaving the dishes pretty dirty gives the detergent something to work on). Also, when my DW load isn't that dirty, or not completely full, I break the Method Smarty Tablets in half, and it is very convenient and cost-effective. In a complaint filed today in U.S. District Court in New York, investors in two different Vanguard-managed funds claim the firm's chief investment officer, George Sauter, portfolio manager Duane Kelly and eight trustees violated U.S. racketeering laws and breached their fiduciary duties to investors by acquiring stock in the Web-based businesses. ``Defendants caused the funds to become owners of illegal gambling businesses,'' according to the complaint. The plaintiffs seek class-action, or group, status on behalf of all similarly situated investors, plus unspecified compensatory and punitive damages. Vanguard, based in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, has more than $1.25 trillion in assets. The company itself is only a nominal defendant in the suit that plaintiff investors Deanna McBrearty and Marilyn Hartsel styled as an action brought on the company's behalf. I agree with GWlolo, you don't need your DW for cabinet install. They just leave the appropriate space based on specs, which are pretty much the same for most Dishwashers. A few DWs are extra narrow or extra wide, but even so, as long as the installers have the specs, you don't actually need the DW on site. Typically, you choose a sink base size based on the size of your intended sink, so you don't really need it until your counters are ready to be templated. You may need to carve out bits of your sink base top to accomodate your sink (normal), but if so, your GC will take care of that.

well, if you sold the place someone could pull out a dish drawer /drawer in the kit and put in a full dw if they need it. it is a huge house... if you plan a lot of parties/gatherings where food will be cooked/brought in and real dishes (vs paper plates- what I use!) then I think it could be a great option for you. the dishes could be stacked in there til guests are gone, then you could rinse / scrape and load the dw. turn it on and leave the room. And not need to look at it til the next day or so. That would keep the mess out of the 'party' space. unless you see a lot of use for it in your near future, I'd just prepare the space/plumbing for it in case down the road things changed - like you take in 3-5 roommates - lol! If your mom, a sibling, friend etc would come to spend the summer (swim) or winter (no snow/cold) with you then you might be glad to have the full dw and have it in that room away from your living area. will the counter across from sink be an open counter or flr - ceiling cabinets? what's in the space behind the w/d and sink? (to the left on drawing)
