Show me your shower curtains and rod installation!

Please help. We are entering the final lap on all the picky details for our new build. One bathroom for the grandchildren has the standard Kohler Villager 14" high tub and the ceiling above the tub is 7'4" high. The water supply for the shower is at 78" high. We intend to use a curved rod. At what height should the shower rod be mounted? I have been presuming we would use a standard 72" length shower curtain liner but now I'm wondering if the curve of the bar will make this too short if the rod is mounted at the usual height of 76".

The other bathroom will function as a guest bath and powder room and will have a Kohler Memoirs tub that is 17" high. The ceiling over the tub in this room will be 8'5". With a ceiling this high is it okay to still mount the curved shower curtain rod at the standard height since the water supply arm is at the standard 78" high? Or would a longer curtain be more appropriate for the high ceiling? I have been told by a friend that there is such a thing as a "hotel length" shower curtain that would be better for the space but haven't been able to find any information.

I'm very design challenged and can't visualize any of this. Opinions and pictures will be appreciated.

Margie, I have replicated Cindy's experiment with the curved rod and verified her results. Mounting the rod at 78" gives plenty of curtain "drape" inside the the tub for a 72" long curtain. Even at 82" it was workable though it was starting to look skimpy. Our tub is the villager with the extra wide ledge along the long alcove wall but I still think the extra elbow room may make sense. The house is a construction site for the next 3 months so tomorrow I'm going to replace the rod in my daughter's bath with the curved rod and see how they like it.

Casey, great tip on the door swing. I had never thought of that either. Since the doors haven't been ordered yet I still have time to change the swing of the door. Also after thinking it through it makes more sense to hinge it the opposite direction anyway. Every time I think I've caught every little detail I realize something else has slipped by but thanks to you I did get this one in time.

I'm not at home and don't have the measurements, but we just did the same thing, same tub. We were afraid the curved rod would pull the curtain out. It doesn't. ;-)

I bought a $10 extension shower rod and the hooks and curtain that I was planning to use. We hung everything on the cheap rod first, and used the shower, testing the height of the rod (easily movable) and moving it around on the tile. Then I bought the curved rod, hung the hooks and curtain on it and got my daughter to stand in the tub, holding the rod in place at the height we liked while I was checking length, angles, etc. We fooled around a bit with it, and discovered that the curvature of the rod doesn't require a longer curtain.

My DH and GC mounted the rod when I wasn't home, and ended up mounting it further in toward the tub than I had planned (as the instructions advised), but it worked out fine and we love the results. The extra elbow room from the curved rod is great, especially in a 30" tub.

Here are some pics of our tub surround although it's not cultured marble. It's from Onyx Collection. I would've preferred solid white but not with the white tub (too much white and never the same shade). The small soap dish was included and the larger one we bought as well as all the trim. We also got color-matched silicone which you'll have to think about if you decide on a different color trim. IMHO I think it would be tricky to pull off different color panels and trim without looking choppy or unintentionally striped but of course you'll have to decide how it looks in your bath. Maybe your room is short and different trim would draw the eye up to make the shower look taller? TorontoTim is right that despite very specific measurements, they sent the pieces a little too big so we had to trim. "We" means DH with me following directions lol. I guess a little too big is waaaay better than a little too small! Trimming was interesting because, while the actual trimming was pretty easy, the material started sagging if left for very long unsupported. So keep everything very flat (if your cultured marble acts the same)! It's also pretty darn heavy despite being 1/4" thick. DH had to get a very strong friend to do the back panel as I couldn't even lift it iwth DH. Also, we couldn't have moved any of it without the little suction handles. And, we borrowed some wall jacks for the panels while the silicone on the back (clear but bought from Onyx Collection to best match their panel material) cured. Anyway, I got the glossy finish for easiest upkeep and it has been that. We've had it for a several months now and I use 50/50 vinegar/water spray and squeegee to clean--easy peasy! Show me your living room drapes with sheer curtains

Normally I don't open the sheers, but thinking I might like to on occassion. So if I put the sheers on a decorative rod, how do I hang the drapery panels? My old drapes had a swag valance - very formal - that covered the top of the sheers where the pleats are. Now that would be exposed if I don't do a valance and not sure how that would look with a rod over it that the drapery panels go on. Hope this makes sense.

Here is ours in out tiny MB. It is hard to tell in the pic, but I used a black sheer poly over a tan cotton. Made simple button holes for hook placement. The combo creates a kind of depth. I have a basic white liner on the inside. All coutesy of WalMart's $1/yard fabric.

There is a web-sit that I was on that had extra long shower curtains. I imagine it was to be used in a situation like your with high ceilings. I will try and find it and post it for you.
Have you already decided where you would hang it?

This is not the site I was thinking of, but even BB&B has extra long shower curtains that are 84" long. I know there are even more sites out there. Do a google search and you will find them. I hope this helps. Margie

If there's a door that swings toward the tub, make sure the bar is above it. Or you'll have to adjust/install a stop so they don't hit.

Boy Casey, I'm glad you mentioned that about the door swing. I hadn't thought about that. My plan is to do the same thing Cindy did, but I don't think I thought about the door swing. See, there's another reason we should have a pocket door, but the budget had to be cut somewhere. Oh well!

Great flsea...I love the curved curtain rod. I don't even feel like I am taking a shower in a tub. It is so roomy. I do not have the glass door, only the rod.

I took a couple of photos yesterday of the shower rod. Hope this helps you visualize!

(I bought the fancy double hooks, planning to put an outer curtain up. We like the fabric liner well enough to use it alone for now.)

Cindy, Now that you have lived with it mounted according to the instructions do you wish it had been further out? From your picture it looks like the mount is centered on your outer tub ledge and I think it looks perfect the way it is. If you hadn't told me I would have thought that was the "fancy curtain". Very nice!

With a 84" shower curtain and curved shower rod mounted 86" high-wouldn't that defeat the purpose of the curved rod giving more space. I want to put up that curved shower rod but I'm thinking by the time it gets to my height in the shower curtain-there would be no curve or additional space. Has anyone ever mounted one that high and been happy. Did it really give additional space. Thanks

flseadog - I'm fine with the location as it is. When I came home and learned they had moved it in a bit, I was ready to be upset, but it is just fine. Since the master bath is under construction right now, four of us are showering in there daily, and we all are happy with the elbow room. Thanks for the compliment. An outer curtain made the space seem smaller, and it's minimal already.

I'm not thrilled with the fancy hooks though...they fly off the rod when you take the curtain down - I've been hit a couple of times. My husband threw his towel over the hooks yesterday, and when my daughter pulled it off to shower, a hook flew in the toilet. She was not pleased. Oh the joys of togetherness!

cassie 225, I don't think you would lose much width in 10-12" of height. It doesn't curve in to the tub until the very lower part. But that's why we did the temporary rod experiment first -- I didn't want to drill holes in the tile until we were sure where we wanted it. Well worth the $10.
