Thanks everyone for all of your comments. I'll take some photos asap so that anyone who has ideas can offer them. We really aren't capable (anymore) of doing any of the work ourselves. I myself, have physical problems which would prevent me from doing so. My BF is just not detail oriented enough (as I have learned from watching him this past year since we took possession of the house). Seriously, he tries hard and in a pinch can take care of things but honestly it's like his eyes don't work right or something and then he gets all hurt feelings when I have to point out what is wrong; so it's just not worth it. Thankfully, because of all the work already done on the house I have people I trust. We do have another small bathroom - but it's only a Powder Room but, at least it is somewhere to use a toilet and wash up in a pinch. The shower, as I mentioned, will not be touched since it was recently redone. We don't intend to reconfigure anything for the most part - plumbing will remain in place (except for moving the tub's plumbing over a foot or so - there is room, the wall is long) and while I would really love a double sink I suspect it would mean changing the entire layout of the room including re-doing that shower; which means $2000 already spent down the tubes which would just gall me; so I'll live with the one. It's only two of us living here anyway. At least I don't have a desire to make it a show piece. It's not a fancy house, I don't need a spa bathroom. I just want something up-to-date and which works well (I put a lot of thought into my kitchen; also not a show-stopper but one which "fit" into the existing style and materials of my Craftsman home. I intend to do something similar for the bathroom.

Hi everybody! I have been waiting all summer for it to cool off. It seems that the heat makes my dizziness and nausea worse. I have lost about 15 lbs with being too sick to eat throughout the summer. I just this week got my helper here to help me clean the garage and then I moved the vanity out there and sanded it a bit in the easy places, and got it up on a table. I got the brass floor protectors pried off the bottom of the legs and was pleased to find no holes have been drilled in them. That means that I can drill holes for the feet I bought. I have adjustable feet that will give the vanity an extra 1/2" of height, and that can be screwed up to give another 1/2" if we want. That would make the legs appear to float way too high in the air, so I don't think it will work. the extra 1/2" will have to suffice, with the ability to make the vanity level so that the sink will drain properly. I have also decided that the bail-type handles that came with it are not going to work for us. I can't see us fumbling around trying to grab the bail that has recessed back into the grooves of the handle around it, standing there with water or soap in our eyes. A knob is much easier to use. I had Hubby try using the bail and he vetoed it on the first try and said, "replace 'em!" I am using these on doors of a set of shallow cupboards that will be recessed into the closet of the the neighboring bedroom. I figured they were a sure bet for the six drawers, too. I am not going to use the center drawer anymore, what with all the plumbing going on above it, so I will just fill in those holes. I need to cut away the bottom of the drawer space, then move the drawer support piece to the left or right. It is at dead center right now, and the sink's drain will need to go there. I just have to sand down the fluted areas of the vanity table, then it will be ready to be primed and painted. I am still leaning toward painting it the violet Peace and Happiness. I have purchased more components for the plumbing. I have all of the shower controls and the rain shower head and regular shower head. Still need to get the hand-held and some safety hand-hold bars for the shower area. I still have not finalized a wall tile (looking at fake Cararra tile for the room's walls) or floor tile or the surface for the top of the vanity. We HAVE concluded, though, that we cannot get this job done until Toby, our ever-more-confused beagle/golden retriever mix, dies. He will be 16 at the end of this month. He has spinal arthritis and began vomiting every time he was given his Tramadol or his glucosamine/chondroitin pills, then quit taking them. He had to go on prednisone to control the pain. He is peeing a lot in the house, always on a rug or quilted mattress pad put down for him. The bathroom is his main place to pee. I will not have my new floor grout saturated with dog pee. I don't think the poor guy would cope well with the construction, either. He is now blind in one eye and somewhat deaf. It would be too confusing for him to do all that construction. So even though I can't get Jim over here to do the work, if I could, I would not be able to do it until Toby passes on. So, instead, we are getting new gutters and trim, and getting our four remaining windows replaced. We did the other three windows when we remodeled the kitchen and made the living room into the library/music room. I am in the process of cleaning and decluttering so the window guys can get in to measure!

Thanks both. mvcanada, we were thinking of buying a vanity/sink combo online so not necessarily able to buy extra material for backsplash and counter shelf, though if we go with a basic white it shouldn't be too hard to match, right? I can't decide if I would prefer a shelf that extends from the sink countertop, or one that is separate and between the sink and mirror. Might depend on which vanity we choose (still looking, as evidenced by my other post). But good point on running whatever we have to meet the large mirror. pamal66, can you clarify your last bit about the metal strip or pencil liner? Is that for the end of the backsplash on the edge of the sink so it doesn't feel like it just ends by accident? We did consider tiling the wall with the sink/toilet but we were feeling like the current half wall of tile was making the room feel smaller, and with the layout, we'd have to tile everything or just the tub (because tiling by the sink/toilet plus the tub but not the last wall where the vent is would just feel unfinished). We haven't decided on wall or floor colors yet, though the fixtures and tub tile will probably be a basic white. We love this floor: And these are some of our vanity inspirations: (this last one with a white top instead) One thought I had about the tile border was that if it doesn't match the tub tile, it could match whatever we put in the shower niche, but that's as far as I've gotten in finding an actual tile!

Beth H., do you know more about the fixtures / hardware in that first photo you posted? It doesn't look quite as brassy gold as some of the gold finishes I've seen. It's a beautiful color. Thank you for all the thoughts on breaking up the black/gray/white. If we end up with our gray vanity and plain brushed nickel / stainless fixtures (may be necessary due to budget constraints), can I add a wood frame or other colored metal frame to our mirror or is that too many different colors / styles? We're planning on an extra large mirror to cover the sink and toilet (the wall is about 60" long) and were considering doing it frameless or just slightly beveled, but could go with a frame if it's the right look. The sink has to be flush with the wall on the left, so I can't add much framing otherwise it will push the mirror too far to the right, but something narrow is possible. Given the size we will probably have it cut by a glass store so can likely add any simple frame we choose.
