Is my 24' DW opening too large for a Bosch or Miele?

Originally I was going to purchase a Bosch 800 series stainless steel dishwasher. Cabinets were planned according to those specs - the required cutout width is 24". The DW width is 23 9/16". That implies that there will be 7/16" gap to be split on each side of the dishwasher.

I found a good deal on a Miele Diamante Plus dishwasher. Its width is also 23 9/16" (same as Bosch), but it calls for required cutout width of 23 5/8" (smaller than Bosch).

Does it make sense that 2 dishwashers of the same physical width would require cutouts that differ by 3/8"?

Anyone willing to post pictures of their Bosch or Miele "gaps"

Does my worrying about 3/8" gap mean I've lost my mind?

I have that Diamante Plus installed in a 24" cutout and it looks fine with the stainless door. But if I was using a panel ready Miele and put wood cabinet on it, then the gap would be more noticeable.

Library girl: you have NOTHING to worry about. Either the bosch or miele will look fine. A 7/16 gap divided by two is only aprox 3/16 on each side which is nothing at all to fret, in fact its quite good to have that small amount of wiggle room. The units will come with a flexible rubber seal that will completly hide the gaps.

Is it ss door or panel ready? If its a panel ready dishwasher, the panel could actually be made to to fit the opening instead of the dw door width so it would look perfect.

I find this quite curious. Both brands are working within the same space constraints: namely 24" (or 60cm) width x 34 1/2" height. At the end of the day the interiors are pretty close to even in total size. Sure one will be bigger or smaller than the other in volume, but really one plates' worth of size is going to swing your decision??? The racking layout will have the biggest effect but only in relation to your specific tablewear and how you choose to nest things. I don't think it's as easy as saying "brand x has a larger capacity, so I'll buy it ". Who measures the capacity ? Is it with a tape measure or with real dishes ? DO they use the same dishes that you do ? FWIW - I have both brand of DW's and a Fisher Paykel drawer too. They all have their strong points, and my dishes ,glasses, pots, and silverwear all fit in each one.

So glad to see more people post their experience with their machines. Thank you! alexamorrie, good to hear you're happy with your Kenmore Elite. I liked our old DW but I have to admit that I also like the 3rd tray Bosch and Miele feature. We always have a lot of flatware, spatulas, knives and such, more than we could fit in the flatware baskets in our old machine. Our old Kenmore had a small, long basket at the back of the top tray that came in handy but the new Kenmores don't have that, unfortunately. Buehl, good to hear from another happy Bosch owner. Thanks for letting me know that your dishes fit. I'm familiar with Pfaltzgraff (our previous dishware was Pfaltzgraff) so I know it's roughly the same thickness as our current Fiestaware. Thanks, rococogurl, for answering my question. I don't know how often I'll fold tines down or lift sections out but it would be nice to have that flexibility. Thanks, somersetlass, glad to hear you liked your Mieles. I'm glad you've had good experiences with your KAs, catbuilder. Our Kenmore badged KA was great, the previous KA not nearly as good. That said, neither lasted much beyond 10 yrs. And that's just crazy! Seriously, when did a 10 yr appliance lifespan become the norm? Karenseb, glad to hear you're happy with your Bosch. I'd love it if you'd take a pic of it in action. I'm curious to know what you mean by " more versatile double sided utensil rack." Thanks! sjhockeyfan, I think our old DW had fold down tines that we never folded down. But since the tines on the Bosch and Miele aren't quite as generously spaced as our old Kenmore, it might be an issue for us when we wash casserole dishes and fry pans. I think I'll need to take another trip to the appliance store to look at the machines again. A2, you are awesome for posting a pic of your Miele DW in action! I can't believe how much you fit in it! Do you remember which model it is? You mentioned on your 3rd year anniversary thread that you had a service call on the machine. What was it for? Thank you, everyone!

I am not home and can't check right now. But I recall that our Miele dishwasher has rubber gaskets all around that touch the cabinet. This provides a seal for better noise insulation. I think, but I am not 100% sure, that this gasket expands sufficiently to make the dishwasher fit the slightly wider cabinet. I have normally seen dishwasher being plugged into an outlet instead of hardwired. That makes it much easier to pull it out, if you need to service it. It also makes it easier to disconnect, if there is some sort of malfunction. I would try to keep this feature. Fortunately, installing a basic surface mounted mains outlet is really easy. And in many cases, it's almost as easy to install a new properly recessed outlet. So, I think that's the approach I'd take. If this is a newly built house and ask the builder to install the outlet. If this is an older building, ask a handyman or, if you can't find one, an electrician to install the outlet for you. Should be cheap, but exact cost depends on the cost of labor in your market. As a rule of thumb, this should take on the order of 30min of work.

Miele cut out for a snug fit and the minimum noise is slightly under 24". Consult the spec sheet if you're going with Miele. A strip can be installed to cover.

23 5/8" is actually 1/16" larger than 23 9/16".

@rococogurl - too late for the spec sheet, but it's good to know about the strip if noise is an issue.
@robj - maybe I should have been more explicit - what I was trying to express was that Miele's 23 5/8" cutout was smaller than Bosch's 24" cutout , since we were discussing cutouts... I had already said that the 2 dishwashers are the same size.
I guess that Miele is only going to give installers 1/16" wiggle room vs. Bosch's 3/8" wiggle room.

I have no issues with noise with the 24" opening, though some have stated over the years there is slightly less sound when using the recommended 23 5/8" opening. The difference I've noticed is that a fully loaded cycle is quieter than if there's only a few items in there. That is because with less items, you can hear more of the water-jets sound.
