Question for those of you with french door fridges

I have been reading reviews on French Door refrigerators and have found a common complaint to be... that since the ice maker is in the refrigerator part, that it does not keep the ice frozen and it melts and water drips into the drawers on the door below the icemaker or else the ice melts together in a clump and has to be broken up. Has anyone here with a French door refrigerator experiences this?... Thank's in advance....

I have a GE Adora. I bought it about 6 months ago. I don't have any problem with the ice melting under normal conditions. What happens is that sometimes on the cubed ice setting, the ice jams up against the little styrofoam door that opens to let the ice out. When that happens then the ice starts melting bacause the door is open. I have gotten used to this and I can tell by the sound if there is a problem. I also found that pulsing the ice lever prevents this. The rest of my family can't seem to figure it out so I tell them to look up to see if the door closed. On the shaved ice setting, clumping is an issue. After I get the shaved ice, I chase it with cubed ice so the chute doesn't get clogged with frozen ice chips. Obviously this is a real dissapointment and no one should have to deal with this. I tried to call GE twice but never got through to a person. The system is automated and just wants to schedule a repairman for you. Since I don't have time to wait around for a repairman I just deal with it. On the plus side, I like the fact that it has a small icemaker on the door instead of on a shelf inside the refrigerator. Since the ice bin is small and sealed, we never get stinky ice like we did in our old refrigerator from not using enough ice. So far we have never run out of ice on the door and we have a family of 4. The Adora does have a second ice maker in the freezer but so far we have only tuned it on to test it. We will probably use the freezer ice as we get more into the summer. Temperature control is fantastic. It has something called Turbo Cool. I can't figure out what that is supposed to do. My best guess is that it just turns on the compressor but why you would turn it on manually when the thermostat will turn it on is beyond me.

I have the Samsung. Bought about three years ago. No issues like that. Good luck!

I probably have the same fridge as lynn2006 and jabelone except with the single door above in our utility room. We were originally looking at the single door versions because they were less expensive, but we decided we liked the single door better because the French door shelves block so much of the opening unless you can open them past 90 degrees (we have a wall to one side, so that was a problem). There was also that issue of not knowing what side something would have been put away on and figuring that we would wind up opening both doors in a narrow space -- meaning it was really tight on both sides. The single door has worked out well and I really like the bottom freezer. I don't find that I am bending to go into it that often since you typically open the freezer a lot less often. Everything seems to stay very cold in the freezer and so far has been very easy to find things. I am also thrilled to have an icemaker in the utility room before my youngest joins marching band. Two gallon jugs of ice per day would have had us buying ice. It's a little bit of luxury we would have done without before the Energy Star 35% off sale at Great Indoors. :-)

We are in the last minute stages of choosing pulls for our kitchen (in our newly completed house, yay!). We are planning to have a fully integrated french door fridge with the freezer drawers on bottom and cabinet panels on everything. I came over here to look around at the fridge we have already decided to buy (Themador Freedom) but I got sidetracked when a thread mentioned the appliance pulls on a french door fridge. The rest of the cabinetry in the kitchen is raised panels and I am realizing that the styles (isn't that what the border part around the edge is called?) are a tad narrow. Our dishwasher panel came and we were definitely surprised by the look - the scale up is not what we imagined and the pull we chose was too big so we are starting all the way over. The fridge panel hasn't been made yet (I don't think) and now after reading comments about integrated fridges here I am super nervous that we will have trouble with the appliance pulls being too close My question is - how can we plan for this? When the panel is made for the fridge door do all the dimensions get larger or should I expect the style to be the same width as it is on other cabinets? Maybe we can call the manufacturer and ask about teh dimensions of the panel? I can't believe we didn't think about this until the last minute!!! Of course, we haven't chosen pulls yet so maybe if there is limited space we could compensate some by not getting overly wide pulls. Here is a picture of part of our kitchen so you can see the cabinetry - obviously fridge will go there on the right. Excuse the dust the house is still under construction here I would love to hear experiences from other integrated french door fridges and even pictures of your pulls if you have them handy. Thanks!

We've had a Samsung just shy of a month (so no long-term info to pass on to you). It's the big one (29 cubic feet I think) with ice/water on the door. I especially love how smoothly the freezer door glides open and also how much it holds without things getting lost. Also the electronic display on the door showing the fridge and freezer temps is another favorite feature....no more squinting at the little mercury thermometer we put in our previous fridge and then guestimating how much to turn the dial to adjust for cooler or warmer!! It's those little things that mean so much. :-)

It's good to hear a variety of opinions on the Jenn-Air fridge. Chicgoans, yours might be three years old but Whirlpool sticks with a design for many years, no doubt it's not too different for Jenn-Air. We have lots of freezing going on in our current Whirlpool fridge, but I think a lot of that has to do with the constant opening and closing that goes on with a family of nine.... we must keep the temp down to keep the cabinet cold enough for the milk to taste good, but it freezes lettuce and strawberries. Even our eggs, sometimes. sskit: Where did you buy yours? You got a fabulous deal - what a price! I'm looking at $2900 as the lowest so far for the 72" CD french door fridge. That is so much money, but I have to have the SS all the way around the cabinet. I'm thinking this recession should have more of a downward pressure on appliance prices! Thanks to all who replied. Any other opinions or recommendations?

Thank you for the replies... but my husband was successful at fixing ours so doesn't look like I will be needing a new one, right now anyway.
