I have a chair with casters that I have used for 9 years. I have one of the clear pads with teeth under the chair that has been there for just as long and so far it's held up all of these years.

Bob that is wonderful! Mine will get cracks in the pad and then finally it's too bad to roll the chair on.

I hope it's not my chair. It wasn't a cheap chair as the arms go up and down and the back can be positioned too.

I've the cheapest clear plastic with the teeth from one of the office supply stores. I probably got it in November 2001 and it's still functioning fine.

I'm at the computer a few hours each morning. I just read mostly so the chair doesn't move around much.

Yeah actually like Albert my chair is set so it doesn't move much when I'm on the computer... which is several times a day. Might be why it's lasted so long.

Thanks everyone! I am in and out of my chair all day long. It's rolling and moving a lot. I guess that is what the problem is. I do feel better about it now after reading your answers.

I wonder if it might be the pad under your carpet or the carpet itself having more "give" as you roll over it that's wearing out your pads.

We don't use any protective pad at all on our carpet and it doesn't seem any worse for wear from computer chair wheels. Used all day long, lots of rolling in the last 8 yrs.

This carpet is just a large oval flat nap with jute backing over hardwood floor without padding underneath. We'd had it for years when we moved in here and just plunked it in this spare bedroom, which has become our computer room.

Thanks for the idea but I have been in two different houses with the same problem. I have padding with a nap.....if that's what you call it. It is too hard to move the chair on this type of carpet.

I guess I'll just have to buy a new pad every couple of years. :-(

Just a thought... you could try putting a piece of luan under the chair or some other type of wood laminate that the chair would roll easily on and probably last for a long time.

Mine does not last, it breaks and someone could cut their feet if they used it barefoot. I was wondering if one of the non plush area rugs would work.

Stargazzer, that's what I'm using--a large oval area rug. No pad and no problems rolling or ruining the rug. Feels a lot better under my socks or bare feet too.
