Would this be a bathroom don't?

I am keen on the idea of a blue vanity for my master bath. Would this age like mint or peach tiles? I don't want to set myself up for shuddering at my own bad taste 20 years from now!

Although for today this color looks pretty ... well.... pretty!

It is a milk paint which is a lovely hand finish that I think will age beautifully in my Nantucket/old beach feel bathroom.

Your opinion?

I love that color! I don't think it will age badly just because it isn't trendy, as pink & black bathrooms or avocado green fixtures once were. Not everyone is rushing out to buy this, so it won't be dated.

Anyway -- who cares? If you love it, get it. It's just perfect for a Nantuckety bathroom.

Go for it! Unlike tile, it can easily be painted if you feel that it's showing its age.

Les really has the right idea here. It is very much dependent on the mirror and lighting. Here is a case study for an old MS color called Honeydew, a vibrant saturated yellowy green. I used this in my powder room in my summer house back in 2002. No windows, tiny bathroom, big mirror, plenty of Reveal light from a typical three-light over-the-sink fixture. Honestly, my skin looked really great in that bathroom, absolutely contrary to what one would expect. My daughter, who has different coloring, also loved the way she looked in there...enough to request that color for her current bathroom. Flash forward to last year, another gallon mixed and up on the walls in her bathroom. She has a pitched ceiling and I painted it all with the green. The mirror is a tiny little Pottery Barn thing and the lights are the adorable little sconces from Rejuvenation. She has a huge skylight and overhead lighting as well. The color just doesn't work from the standpoint of good facial color rendering and makeup application. But, she doesn't care. I have asked if I can at least repaint the ceiling, but she likes it, so I am on to the next room! In my current and previous bathrooms, I have used MS Atlantic, a blue green "spa" color. In theory, this would not be a good color for the reflectivity problem, but it has been incredibly popular for the last decade or so. In my last bathroom, I had a large tiled wall of green Silestone and had no issues with reflection back onto my face. The first wall color...yes, it went minty...but my skin did not. I think that there is no one-size-fits-all answer for this conundrum. But, more light, better light and less wall is a good guideline for preventing the problem.

hlove: Ah, we have similar taste! My sister-in-law designed our bathroom and gets credit for the floor idea (I picked the green accent tile and showed her pics of what I liked and she did the rest). The floor tile actually comes all white. It was her brilliant idea to pop out a few of the white tiles and insert the green glass tiles as accents. Honestly, I ADORE how it came out! It gives the floor the perfect amount of sparkle! If you want, I can ask her where she found the white floor tile (the green glass tile came from Lowes). Yes, I like clean simple lines too and don't want to clutter things up. I'm glad you agree that the light would look too high if we moved it up (yes, DH would NOT have been happy with that request, the poor guy has been busting his butt on our new house for so long, the last thing he needs is unnecessary added work from me). "Try different temperature LED light bulbs" You might buy one of these Commercial Electric NS01aA10ER1-259 (for example) which have selectable color temperatures. Screw the connector into a portable lamp and try several color temperatures to see if one of them makes the tile and countertop look more consistent. Maybe another wall color would help. The entire room looks rather beige now.

Thanks for the additional pictures. Gotta say, I would have been thrilled to have this vintage bathroom in my house. Even the vanity and counter look to be in tip top shape. Bathrooms are one of the most expensive and disruptive rooms to remodel. Working with quality vintage elements can be such a huge time and money saver!!! (Btw, I love the skirted toilet. Not vintage, I know. :) Could you share the brand? It looks to be on the compact size which is what my bathroom needs.) The flooring is sheet vinyl? Usually easier upkeep than a tile floor. More comfortable underfoot too. The vintage pattern is subtle and the colours are harmonious with the dusty pink tile. If it's in good condition, I'd totally let the flooring and tile determine the colour palette: dusty pink, ivory and gold. The vanity looks to be in good shape as well. If its storage worked for me, I might consider changing its hardware if the current handles didn't feel comfortable in hand. (Hard to see in pictures but the shape of these door handles remind me of those thin vintage metal handles with edges that feel sharp in hand.) If they're comfortable though, I'd just see if a bit of polishing would work. I'd want a subtle gleam for the hardware. Three other elements I'd consider in this bathroom: 1) Lighting: Is it optimal? You might want to assess the quality of artificial lighting in the space (does it cast a yellow light on everything? Is it positioned to flatter?) and upgrade if budget allows. Decide on the lighting situation before painting the walls because you might want to install wall sconces. (Straight on light is more flattering and functional than overhead light. The lack of casted shadows is appreciated when shaving and doing makeup, for example. ) Btw, the current light fixture makes sense style-wise in this bathroom but you certainly could consider a different style direction if you wished. 2) Window dressing: I love the unparalleled light control and privacy blinds offer but these look at bit "heavy" and utilitarian in this room. Depending on privacy needs and budget, I would consider something softer. Maybe privacy film and soft curtains? Plenty of options. Depends on your style direction. 3) Storage: A recessed medicine cabinet is a treasure in my books. A hinged mirrored cabinet door could be made for this one. If you don't like the look of the wood vanity, you could probably paint it. Or even sand and stain it, depending on the quality of the wood. I'm tempted to search for pink and gold bathroom images but I'm rushed for time. Besides, by the time I hit submit on this comment, I'm sure 10 other comments will have been posted. I do ramble. :P

And you are right. I am living in what I hope to be my forever home so I should do what is pleasing to me!

Vanities can always be re-painted. I would recommend sticking with white fixtures (sink, toilet, especially tub, etc). But I think that a cheerful blue vanity would be fun. Go for it!

I'm just agreeing with everyone else: go for it! I think the color is beautiful, but if you want to change it someday, painting is pretty easy. Definitely go with white toilet, sink, tub, and tile. Those are the things that are harder to change. Use a pretty color on the walls: sand, light yellow, paler blue?

Thank you everyone. I posted about a month ago asking how you come up with a bathroom "look" and the responses told me to go with what pleases me!

I love the marble bathrooms that are so popular right now, but I just felt it wasn't ME. So I am going with my heart and my heart is always dreaming of being on the beach.

Thank you. I will get to work on quiet white tiles and flooring to let the vanity speak it's volume.

When I read, 'blue vanity' I went "ewwww" but clicked on the link anyhow and when I saw it, I went "ahhh, beautiful!". Go for it and don't forget to post photos when the bathroom is done.

that's the way to do it! you have to live with it - make it something you enjoy. it can always be repainted if your taste changes. as it often does for women!

Of course you'll hate it in 20 years...who wouldn't hate the same vanity in 20 years LOL But the beauty is you can just repaint :)

It took me a year to make a final decision on my kitchen cabinets. I kept going back to my first love - green. But I thought, like you, that it would be dated and I would hate myself for going against the norm. But, I loved them as soon as they were installed and I still love them - enough so, that I used the same in my master bath. If I ever try to sell the house, it will have to be to someone who has the same tastes but I don't really care. So, my advise is the same as others - if you love the color, get it!

I agree...white sink and tub. The blue and white to me just screams nautical...I love the look. Like everyone says...if years later you want a change...there is always paint.

Go for it!!! It's easily changed later if you get sick of it. I assume we'll all be sick of what we're doing now in 20 years!

Love it and agree with everyone above. It's unique. Breaking from the norm and avoiding what is popular and "in" is a perfect way to prevent a room from looking outdated. If it was never in, it can never go out. I also think it's great for a Nantucket bathroom and I'm a strong believer in going with what you love.
