Advantium 240 or Miele Speed Oven

I need a single thermal/convection oven and a smaller speed oven above it (with a warming drawer below). The speed oven will act as my microwave also. This site is full of information about the Advantium and it sounds like a great way to go but there is not a lot of information on how the Miele Speed Oven compares.

My hesitation is the carousel bothers me a bit in the Advantium and the fact that when using the microwave feature it only can be set in 15 second increments. Does that seem to be a problem for anyone?

Any thoughts?

Just as a sidelight, there is a new Advantium 240 coming out in August 2008. It will be able to accommodate a 9 x 13 pan but the height will be a little less since there will be an optional drawer beneath it to fit the plates.

janetz, I have also been considering these two smaller ovens to go above a convection oven. I have the same concerns about the turntable.

How much can I bake in the Advantium given the turntable shape and size?

Can it really replace a second oven when I'm doing an evening of baking and for holidays? Everyday grilling hot dogs, hamburgers; baking a pizza, cake, a few cookies, meatloaf, roast, chicken, and baked potatoes might be more energy-conserving with a small oven. (But no one can give me energy usage info.)

How do people use their Advantiums?

Would I do better with a steam oven as a second oven, such as Gaggenau or Miele steam, or a speed oven, like Advantium or Miele?

Miele has a new steam cooker: DG 5060 Steam Cooker. Just not here in the States yet. In fact, Miele has launched their new Generation 5000 series of cooking appliances elsewhere. Don't bother calling Miele USA to inquire about them as they are totally useless with any pertinent information that would be of any value.

Worth noting that the 120v/15a versions of the Advantium built-in oven can be placed under a countertop, but not the 240v/30a versions (don't think there's a Cafe 240v, only Profile or Monogram). Also, the 120v Advantium is available in a 27"w version as well as 30". However, I wouldn't recommend a 120v Advantium if you use the speed cooking function often, as it has only 1/4 of the wattage available to it (1800w rather than 7200w, since it's not only half the wattage but also half the amperage), and thus relies more heavily on microwaves when in speedcooking mode, so your food won't get as crispy as with the 240v models, even though it takes twice as long to cook. For pure microwave or convection use, the 120v Advantiums are almost as good though. Also check out the Electrolux speed oven. Think Kitchenaid and/or Jenn-Air or some Whirlpool-owned brand has one now too.

I've been looking at the Advantium 120 wall oven and the Miele speed oven. I really want to go with the Miele but threads on this forum have led me to believe it is difficult to clean due to bumps that increase surface area. Then I read (here?) that a new easier to clean model is coming out. My salesperson asked his Miele rep. (I'm in the midwest) and he said release will be Feb. (read: or March, or April...). Also, the Miele is quite a bit more expensive since I am considering the 120. 4 times faster then a regular oven is fast enough for me. Miele has such a great reputation...sigh. As for the wall ovens, I am going a different direction (Bosch dual fuel 30" range) but when I was thinking wall oven, my plan was to go with the 30" Miele since the difference from 24" was @ $650 plus the trim kit for the speed oven. In the scheme of our planned major reno that didn't seem a lot for what it would accomplish. I'm the 'go to' house for family gatherings and that's usually @ 25 people. Do both the Advantium and the Miele speed oven hinge from the bottom or is the Advantium side hinged? I thought Advantium came both ways. That said, I must admit I just can't do a GE wall oven b/c that is what I am replacing (not Monogram) and it has not been a favorite of mine for a variety of reasons. I also have a GE Profile microwave that has been and continues to be great.

The Advantium won't do that for you either, really. You can warm frozen food on speed cook mode but some of the limits of microwaving apply. The smaller the serving, the better it works. Family sized portions take longer, and you have to work harder to make sure the interior is fully and evenly cooked. There is a loss in quality when you take short cuts. Some people can use a speed oven to cook many things as well as they could in a standard oven, in about half the time. That's cooked from raw. With anything frozen, especially if it's large and dense, you'll have a much better result if you thaw it first. From there, speed cooking could cut the time for warming. And the Advantium isn't bad at defrosting. I have both a Gaggenau combi-steam and an Advantium, but I don't have the time pressures most of the time to need to speed cook. If I had to choose one, I'd choose the combi- and a basic model microwave, because there are things that I like to microwave. You could probably do all of them in the combi-steam though. Part of the reason I have an Advantium is for the third oven space it gives as a convection oven. And I thought I'd use the speed feature more. Not sure what small holes they are referring to. The only small holes that I see are on the very back where the convection fan is located. I try to keep the really splattery foods away from my Miele ovens. That's what I have the big oven in my gas range for. And if that one gets dirty, I just don't care as much. It gets minor cleaning any time there is a bigger spill. And then it gets thorough cleaning with a chemical oven cleaner every couple of years. Having said that, the SpeedOven does occasionally get dirty, and I find with Miele's coating on the stainless steel, it generally is pretty easy to wipe off as long as you do so while it is still relatively fresh. The only area that is challenging is behind the broiler element as that is hard to reach into. But then, you also don't really get a chance to look there. So, maybe it really doesn't matter. With the exception of the top, all the other parts of my SpeedOven still look pretty much pristine, and all I do is a wipe-down with a wet cloth. I have to admit though that my combination steam oven is even easier to clean than the SpeedOven. They are very similar in design overall, but I guess all the extra steam really helps loosen any grime. It's also a lot more useful, so it gets turned on almost daily and has a much bigger chance to get dirty. But it always cleans up easily. My parents have a 30+ year old SpeedOven (I think, it's a Bosch). I has never really been cleaned. Looks quite dirty and burned in, but still functions just fine. So, that gives you some perspective for an alternative approach to that problem.

From the post I gather the oven is not avilable in the US yet and since I'm having to make a decision in the next two weeks on appliances -- Miele Speed Oven or Advantium 240 (the new model, I can live with a hole in the cabinetry for a month or so)?

There were several posts last fall about the Miele being a PIA to clean. We priced it at $3000 compared with the $1200 Advantium. Decided to go GE (just installed today!). Who needs a problem to clean?

starfish, I believe teched is talking about the 120 volt Advantium. The 220 model is twice that price.

Sorry, I missed the "240" in the title. Yes, I got the 120, but that was after extensive reading here. The 120 seemed like a better deal--more space and only slightly slower than the 240. Also, it was pretty comparable to the Miele Speed oven. I did not price out the 240, but just looking on line now, it still appears to be only $1300 to $1500 vs. $2700 + $300 for the trim kit of the Miele.

teched -- can you give us your feedback on the 120 Advantium so far? I have to decide (today!) whether to go with the ((risky?) new 240 Adv. (when it comes out) plus Miele single oven or the Miele doubles plus regular MW. Would love your any advice.

Oh Starfish, sorry that I have been absent. DS has been sick. I have the Adv 120 over the Miele MC. I think it was a good choice. I reheated soup in the Adv and it has this sensor that calculates the time--Goldilocks perfect, not too hot and not too cold (I'm picky about temps). The melt and soften options were perfect for getting butter to to right consistency for baking. Used the speed oven to make hotdogs in the buns. The dogs were juicy and warm and the buns were toasty. Yum. Also made some biscuits using the speed oven. It wasn't any faster per se, but no preheat time and the oven was cool so it did not heat up my house. Hope that helps, even though late.

teched -- Hope DS is better, and thank you for the feedback. I've committed to the Advantium for now but that doesn't stop me from continuing my research, so I appreciate any info.
I'll keep checking back in case anyone has more to say on this --thanks, all!
