One or two showerheads in walk-in shower? and where to place?

We're remodeling our master bath and will have a new walk-in shower with a sloped floor. The shower is approximately 2'9" wide by 5'5" long, with an 2'3" opening along one of the long walls and no door.

I was planning to place a hand-held shower head on a vertical bar on the short wall, farthest from the door opening. Do I need to be concerned about water splashing out of the shower area on to the tile floor?

Also, I think I'd be happy with just one really nice hand held shower head. Plumbing supply lady is encourage an 8" overhead rain shower as well. Is it worth the extra $? Hubby says do it because you can't change your mind later.

The plumbing codes prohibit installing a shower head where it will point towards the door.

Have you built the shower yet or taped it out so you can physically see just how big 2.9 x 5.5 really is? And are those the measurements before tiling? I'm asking because we took out a 3 x 5 ft tub & built a shower in it's place. After allowing the applicable inches for building supplies, the shower ended up being about the same size as yours is and for us, that was too narrow to be comfortable, i.e. no elbow room. We ended up bumping a wall out another 12 inches to add some depth to the space. Even then, after allowing for the curb, tile, morter & backer board, the space is only 42 inches deep. (Just food for thought)

In answer to your question, no I would not waste my time or money on a rain shower. In my honest opinion, they are nothing but the latest "trend" and if you do a search for "rain shower" you'll see several posts regarding the rather negative experiences others have had with them and it will help you come to your own conclusion. Also, I would not put 2 heads in as I believe the shower will be too small to comfortabely accomodate them. I would save the money and just stick with the hand shower that's on a slider placed in a spot that's allowable by code.

I was a spoiled child and had everything I asked for. As an adult I became very frugal and save 50% of my income. I want to retire at 60. If I die before that time comes I still would have no regrets. I am able to sleep well at night because I have savings and absoulutely no debt. That feeling alone is worth the sacrifice. I don't have any family that could help me financially in my old age. If I live into my eighties or nineties, I don't want to worry about whether I can afford to pay bills or medical care. Everyone has different needs. The things that make me the happiest don't cost any money. I love going to the lake and bringing a good book. The only thing I want to do differently when I retire is to have a weekly massage. I don't have any heirs so my money will go to helping homeless animals. Peace happy Thanksgiving, Donna

I recently remodeled and changed the double sinks for one sink plus a nice area where I can sit down for my ablutions. I wanted the increased counter space as well as the increased storage space. I don't spend that much time over a sink anyway so I don't see what the big deal is to have one sink. I especially think it is ridiculous when I see two sinks crammed into a small vanity with a tiny bit of counter space - so big deal you have a dysfunctional bathroom space but you have two sinks. I remodeled for my needs and my aesthetic vision. I am not planning to move and if someone doesn't like it, they can fairly easily just reconnect the plumbing and add the second sink. In terms of mirror treatment, I did a ceiling to counter wall to wall mirror but then put two different mirror treatments above the sink and the "grooming area". The wall to wall mirrors lightens and enlarges my rather small space and the two different mirror treatments differentiate it as well. I also have two Art Deco style sconces above the sink and a version a makeup lighting above the grooming sit down area.

chriskim,,,was going to say exactly that. take out that window and raise the shower head. Tile all the way up. you could also put in a handheld w/a sliding option. I did one in mine. (ignore the bullnose marks on this pic) The shower head I got didn't come w/a long arm. I had to get a different brand and went w/the 12" extension. the head also tilts. handheld can slide up or down. I got one valve that controls BOTH (make sure you look into that) and can have both on simultaneously on this one we gave them a larger window. you might think about this for yours wish I had a better pic of this one to show you the window. This shower was enlarged, which is why the window is now off center. it's also a slider. make sure the tile person waterproofs it well. you can tile all around the window.

Minimum suggested shower is 30"x30", with 36"x36" being recommended. If your dimensions reflect interior space after walls/tile you should be ok width wise.

Our shower is about 4.5x4.5 of usable space. We have Kohler rainshower and Kohler fixed multi-function shower and love it. Multi-function usually on 'massage' setting while the rainshower provides overall coverage. Heaven.

Rainshower is centered in shower.

We wanted the doorless, which we got, along with flooding. Fortunately we had a stud placed to support a door should it be needed (it was). If you do go doorless I would make sure your plan can accomodate future install of door.

Very highly recommend the rainshower/multifunction combo.

I've never heard of 30x30 being the "recommended" width/depth for a shower, I just know when we SAW what 30 inches offered space wise, there was literally NO ELBOW ROOM.

Maybe the combo rain shower is the exception to the rule, but there are MANY posts of folks in the forum who have regrets regarding their rainshower head installations. So if you plan on using that as your main shower, you should probably be sure it either has varying spray options or that you have another alternative for washing your hair.

Hi all, thanks for the info. The 2'9" x 5'5" is finished space (I estimated losing 1.5" from the each wall of the framed dimensions). We will investigate popping one wall out a little. And will likely have just one, really nice hand shower.

For the record, 30"x30" is not a recommendation, it is the code required minimum measured from finished wall to finished wall.

Casual observation, most of those regretting their rainshower heads did not have a fixed or handheld as their 'primary' showerhead. Bottom line, its personal preference and cost.
