where can i find a simple cast iron tub?

that will be surrounded by three walls ...it will have to have a finished front, it's not a drop in or mounted on a deck. it needs to be 5' x 34" (right hand). i'm in new jersey if that matters. how much can i expect to pay for this seemingly elusive product? and can someone tell me when this will get easy?

Try American standard. I'm using their Princeton model but it's 60 X 32. They might have a larger one. Many other styles to choose from. What I like is it's about 13-14" high which is also an easy height for a shower too. I think they are about $200-$300.

If you use AS keep in mind their standard white color is a bit creamy and not the usual blue white in matching your other fixtures.

We have Toto 1525's (?) on order--I believe they are 60" X 31" or 32" (info s/b on their site). We'd read good reviews about them here, if that helps.

We ordered them at Hardware Designs in Fairfield NJ (our salesperson Sean has been terrific BTW!).

I think the tub probably is cast iron. When I tap on the slope of the back, I hear more of a bell sound. The tiling on the apron may be muffling any sound when I tap on the sides of the tub. On the drain cover, it says "Made in Taiwan," and it looks like cast iron tubs may have been imported from Taiwan in the 80's. The main incentive for the bathroom remodel is a serious leakage problem with the shower pan in the stall shower. A secondary reason is that the entire layout has never been ideal. Third reason is that all the small tile and grout is a pain to clean. Fourth reason is the decor (tile) is dated. I don't know if it's possible or cost-effective to remove the tiling around the tub without damaging it. It would be challenging to design a new bathroom around the old tub with the existing tile. I need to operate the window; it is the only source of ventilation in the bathroom. Changing the layout would provide easier access to the window. I've thought of several alternatives - add a fan, add another window, change the window configuration (awning-type window), or find a window treatment that provides privacy without sacrificing ventilation. While the exterior length of the tub is 66", the interior length is 44". The depth is 15". I'm 5'1" and this size works for me, but probably not for the average-size adult. My teenage son likes to take baths. He's a foot taller than me and has long legs. I took him with me to try out some longer tubs - even some of the 72" tubs are too short for him, depending on the slope of the sides. Given that I'm accustomed to a cast iron tub, will I be disappointed if I replace it with a new acrylic / fiberglass tub? There are some other types of materials, such as Victoria & Albert tubs and WetStyle tubs; I'm thinking about looking at these.

I used a 60x32 20"h tub with fairly thin sidewalls for a recent remodel, and though it's a bit more of a step into it, I don't find it that much more difficult than with shorter tubs (i'm 5'8"). It's easily worth it to have a deeper tub IMO, and it's good for showering too because the floor is wider, longer, and flatter than in most 5' tubs. I wouldn't fret about resale value; people moving into a small house may not have kids, or the kids may be over 8 y.o. who can usually climb into anything. Or the new owners may want to rip out a tub in favor of a shower. Changing to a shorter tub costs almost nothing compared to the cost of the house, so I can't imagine someone not wanting to buy it because the tub is too tall. I bought enough extra wall tiles so that if a future buyer wanted a shorter tub or a shower, it would be easy to retrofit one without having to retile the whole wall because the tile didn't come down far enough.

enduring, we ordered the 30" Bellwether today. I was really hoping he'd change his mind and decide on the 32". We would have had a lot more options. The 32" I saw today had a really bad case of the "dimples" :o The entire outside surface was very dimply. I'm hoping mine won't be as bad. Is yours like that? Ohhh, turn the overflow upside down! Thanks! My plumber will do anything I ask (at least he has so far) :) roadrunnerrita, I considered having his tub refinished but learned that that has it's own issues. As grungy as he gets, I'd be concerned about the finish getting scratched and what I could and couldn't use to clean it with. He said he didn't want a "plastic tub". I like my acrylic air tub but I can't use abrasive cleaners (like Scrubbing Bubbles) and it can scratch pretty easy.

I renovated my 1939 bath and had my cast iron tub refinished. It was never removed during my renovation. During the renovation, my carpenter removed the old tile (was 1950s, not original) and backing from the walls. The walls and ceiling are plaster. This opened up enough space for him to flash, then use appropriate waterproof board and sealing to install the new tile. I was certain I had "in progress" photos but can't find them -- sorry. I used this shower for a year while the downstairs was renovated. If there had been a leak, I would have known because this is over the living room with plaster ceilings, and I saw what happened when the original sink plumbing leaked and caused the living ceiling to cave in! American Standard's Princeton is Americast, not cast iron. Kohler makes a number of cast iron tubs, but I think you'll find that most 5 ft tubs tend to be 30 or 32 in wide, depending on depth.

thanks everyone. i went to home depot and was set on getting one of the americast tubs from american standard but they had a kohler cast iron for the same price ($299) so i got that one. i couldn't believe it. why are they so much more expensive on the web? well, anyway, if you're looking for a kids bathtub head on over to you local HD!

It depends on the model. The Orange store and the Blue store buy a whole heck of a lot of the models they stock, so their pricing is outstanding on those. For special order stuff, it starts to get less competitive.

Home Depot had one called Princeton, that I banged on and could have sworn it was cast iron. Will have to go and check tomorrow. It was under $300. What is the Americast made out of? Is it durable?

Americast is very similar to cast iron, in that it's a porcelain surface, but the underlying material is steel coated with acrylic, more or less. So it's nice and solid like iron, not flimsy feeling like uncoated steel, but much lighter weight.

There are a number of threads here about it, both pro and con.

I'm considering the Cambridge, which is the larger version of the Princeton myself, but it's not cast iron. :)

The Toto tub is nice but it's 16" high. I take mostly showers so 16" high is less comfortable stepping in and out of than a 13" high tub for me. I also like the simple apron on the Princeton. Didn't care for the boomerang design of the Villager. Are there any other choices?

We take mostly showers too, but the Toto was lower than some tubs we sat in in the showroom (I felt like I was sitting in a hole in the ground in some of them!). It'll be nice for those occasions when we do want to soak in the tub if it isn't too low I guess.
