The Season is Upon Us

I bet you thought I meant the Halloween/Thanksgiving/Christmas season, right?

Nope! The Number 1 season around here is Football Season.

At least that's what 50 percent of the people who live here think.

Having been Tailgating Fools for so many years, we have just about any tailgating item you can think of:

rolling gas barbecue, 10 by 10 tent, mammoth ice chest, chairs, gas heater,

rechargable blender, roll-up table and my personal favorite, dishes and glassware up the kazoo.

No longer as young as we used to be, we limit our tailgating experiences to one or two a year.

But ladies, I still do the dishes thing!

Here's our opening weekend bar set-up.

I used the grass placemats I made for Earth Day last April. Even Mr. I-Hardly-Ever-Notice-Stuff

recognized them as artificial turf.

Soon after purchasing a set of Penalty Glassware we realized they were too awkward to use

(awfully heavy, really), so they ended up being more of a decorative item than a usable one. I put

paper bag cones in them to convert them to french fry holders.

Napkins are "penalty flags" and napkin rings are whistles.

Centerpiece is made of a number of things I've collected over the years.

Fantastic! I always love seeing how you decorate that wonderful area. Its a great Sports Bar!

I wish my son could see this (actually I will send it to him!) He lives and breathe college football, especially Alabama Crimson Tide! But also likes the Pro teams too. In fact he just bought another TV, so now he has THREE big ones mounted on the wall of his "man room" and said he won't miss ANY games on! (My DH goes over to watch a lot of the games.)
So I do know what THE SEASON means! LOL.

Mmmhhhmmm...maple syrup! Just had some last night on blueberry/chopped walnut pancakes I made. Super good. It is interesting to hear that about Acer negundo -Box Elder-sap working well. We could tap the hell out of those crudballs! Maybe we'd get a little of that red color in the syrup sap, like the heartwood on box elder. You guys must have seen that, right? In any case, all tree sap has as one of its key aspects, the carrying of sugar from place to place within the plant, so it should be no surprise that species other than Acer saccharum should work for this, albeit pehaps some not as well. +oM ps...........A friend from long-ago days, grew up poor on a ramshackle farm. His dad wanted to do a little of everything, but the methodology wasn't always the tightest. They'd tap trees out in the sugarbush, bring the sap into the saphouse, and boil it down, just like you're supposed to. So what was wrong you ask? Old tires were burned as the fuel to boil the sap down!

A big favorite of mine is a simple Japanese preparation called shioyaki, which means salt broiling. I like it made with a flavorful, fatty fish such as mackeral, bluefish or salmon. Of course, with those types of fish, freshness is especially important. The method can be used with just about any fish, however, and I have had good results with trout. SHIOYAKI ********** Whole fish are sprinkled generously with kosher salt 30 minutes before grilling. During the 30 minutes, the salt will draw some water through the skin by osmosis, firming the flesh and partly desiccating the layer of fat under the skin. Some salt will penetrate and flavor the fish. If you have steaks or fillets, sprinkle with just the amount of salt you would use to season them well to taste, because the exposed flesh will absorb salt more readily than the skin and heavy salting will make them too salty. Again, allow 30 minutes for the salt to work. When 30 minutes are up, brush excess salt off the whole fish or blot water droplets off steaks or fillets. Then grill over a medium fire, following the "Canadian Rule" (10 minutes cooking time for each inch of thickness). For most steaks and fillets, this will be approximately 10 minutes. Whole fish are more variable in thickness, therefore in cooking time. In the end, correct timing depends temperature of the grill and on your grilling skill. Japanese accompaniments (miso soup, rice, daikon salad, etc.) are nice with shioyaki, but shioyaki is a good method of grilling fish for any type of cuisine. Jim

Hi Rhonda,..I had no idea that Englewood was your childhood vacation spot. I love all of Florida but think this area is one of Florida's best kept secrets. but realize I am prejudiced ! ( smile ).I felt the same when I first experienced living here as a skinny young sailor back in 1956 when I was transferred to Pensacola for 2 1/2 yrs. Then in 1992 when I went from married life to single life, promptly drove down to the Keys, roamed around the lower Keys for 1 1/2 yrs, then bought a gas station & waterfront home in the Upper Keys ( Islamorada ) where I lived till 2000. All were special places, but when i moved here 16 yrs ago, I knew my roaming days were over. By the way, my offer of a dozen mangos also extends to Deb. The least I can do,..have 4 trees ( discovered more panicles on the Glenn this morning ), and am only one person,..so no compensation wanted. . The least I can do for all the knowledge youse two dispense on this site for 1st graders like me ! ( smile ) PS : Who is Chris Kattan ? Hi Nancy : nice to hear from you again. Have always admired your tenacity in growing mango's up where you live. Yes I agree,..in fact we are all at the mercy of Mother Nature ! Will never forget my 2nd winter here in Englewood,..the 2009/2010 one,...where I lost 4 of the five new, young, robust mango trees I purchased in Ray's Nursery in Homestead, - hauled 'em all up here and planted them in March 2009. Install strings of Xmass lights & wrap the trunks w/towels in early December when the dangers were broadcast ?? Naw, hey, this is zone 9b/10a right ?,..will be fine ! A big lesson learned then,..thought I was still in the Keys where no fruit trees freeze ! Anyway, the 4 trees I now have are old & tough enough to survive our rare short-lived dips down to 43 - 48 degrees,..don't want to think of lower temps ! But realize you do,..every year ! I hope 2017 is a banner year for us both !

Ha Maryl I am always surprised when people try to kill violets. They are so very pretty and scream spring to me . For me in my situation , I allow them to grow all over because where they grow dandelions don't and I HATE dandelions. I am surrounded by farmer's fields and am at the mercy of the winds when it comes to dandelions. One year I stood in my back yard and watched and prayed while the wind came up and blew huge field full of dead dandelion seeds across the field . Fortunately for me the winds that day were blowing parallel to my back yard !!!!!!!! Thank goodness . That is not always the case. Did you know that Pansies are a type of Viola ? I didn't till I did some research on them . The plant world fascinates me . They are it seems also an important food source for many moths who pollinate other plants. . I also make a violet concentrate that I add to summer drinks that is quite nice and a lovely lavender color. It is said to be good for suppressing coughs in children with asthma and did you know .(exerpt from wikipedia) that "Many Viola species contain antioxidants called anthocyanins. Fourteen anthocyanins from V. yedoensis and V. prionantha have been identified. Some anthocyanins show strong antioxidant activities.[21] Most violas tested and many other plants of the family Violaceae contain cyclotides,[22][23][24] which have a diverse range of in vitro biological activities when isolated from the plant, including uterotonic, anti-HIV, antimicrobial, and insecticidal activities." Also , found during my research many years ago that violet set seeds twice ? "Almost all violets have two kinds of flowers: normal, conspicuous ones that are held above the foliage and may be pollinated and set seed, and short-stemmed, inconspicuous cleistogamous (Greek for closed mouth) flowers that set seed without pollination and produce copious offspring identical to the parent." This is no doubt why they can be so prolific . So while many people do their utmost to get rid of them, I embrace them and enjoy violets in my gardens . I have white, regular purple , purple and white, yellow , red and a freckled violet ........and I love 'em all. They aren't dandelions !!!!

Love your artificial turf placemats--so perfect for this event! Great reuse of the heavy glasses, would never have thought of doing that but it's a great use for them too. Cute centerpiece with all the football items, and like Karen, I just love your sports bar area. Hope your team wins! ;o) Luvs

I love that 'Sports Bar' ..perfect spot to enjoy 'Munchies...A Cold Beer, and a Good Game'.
I remember your clever Placemats..nice to get extra mileage using them again like this.
Great idea for the French Fry holder and Love the 'Whistle Napkin Rings'...another clever idea!
OA...you've got a Million Ideas churning away with these tablesettings...Love them and keep em coming.

Ahhhh, what team are you cheering for!!! Oh, SF ...guess I've heard of them...LOL ! Are those a string of "football" lights!!! The flatscreen tv & bar set-up is cool! Turf placemats...10 yds, yellow penalty napkins..10 more yards, repurposed glass for french fries...touchdown! Rah! Rah! OA, you are so amazing with all your ideas. You keep us well entertained here with all your fun tables.

Jeanne what a great response. We have gotten out of going to all the games but my DB lives in Benica and loves the 49ers too.

I noticed you added fall leaves to your darling centerpiece. Does this mean we can expect some fall decorating soon?LOL Our weather screams fall and it takes me forever to get all my decorations up so I have to start early.

Yes, I have been having fun creating tablescapes lately. Hope I don't run out of steam when the REAL holiday season begins.

Punk, it's still very warm here too. So I'm not sure when my first fall tablescape will get off the ground.

OA, I love your fall/football decorations. I live in Florida so we really don't have a fall. By the time it starts to cool down it is January then before you know it we are sleeveless again by March or April. So I rarely decorate except for pumpkins. Yours looks great!!

Karen, my children and grandchildren love Alabama. Their pool rooms are decorated in football things, they wear their A shirts when there is a game, the flag goes up, etc, etc, etc. Real fanatics - however, my daughter's husband graduated from Auburn so they have a beautiful picture of Alabama on one side and Auburn on the other with the words - A House Divided. I just retreat to my painting room so I don't have to watch any of it.

Or I can play with my dishes which always makes me feel good.

Paintingfool, sounds like Jas and your family would get along great with their Alabama love. (He once told his wife he "survived that fire so he wouldn't miss any of their games". LOL.) Last year they did a family portrait for their Christmas cards, here is what he came up with.

Hey, it's Coach Bryant in his younger days! How cute is that. We have family ties to pro football, but our real love is college football. How fun that the entire family is so involved.

OA, Jas worships Coach Bryant!! His room is full of photos and portraits of him! The littlest one is an obsessed ball player of ANY and ALL kind. He comes home from school, and immediately changes into his full football gear and usually puts the black stuff under each eye too. He'd probably sleep in that outfit if they'd let him. You should hear him explaining game plays to me or his other grandmother. 7 yrs old and sure knows his stuff. LOL.
Suzie is actually a Notre Dame fan, but will root for Alabama. She knows that Ala RULES at their house. ;o)

I love your football cheering section spread, OA!!! What a fun idea! The penalty flag napkins with the whistle "napkin rings" are brilliant . . . and so are your artificial turf placemats! Your centerpiece using the autumn leaves and helmet is wonderful, too. We spent Saturday afternoon cheering on the Oklahoma Sooners, but I didn't do anything special for it. I know that DH & DD would appreciate something like what you've done, so thanks for the inspiration!
