i didn't go on a search for colors, but did need to find a 4-gang that had a standard switch in the first position. be aware that if you use a timer, it may not fit in some of these plate covers. i ordered one from kyle designs and my standard leviton timer did not fit through their decora sized hole. they were unwilling to work with me and just kept saying that all of their products are created based on caliper measurements and would not accept my tape-measure measurements (as if all of us have calipers lying around) and said that my timer must be oversized, which leviton says is standard decora size. home depot has some modular plate covers (leviton as well i believe) where you can choose the shapes of the switches you need and click the pieces together. these also did not work with a timer because of the overlap where the modular pieces click together... but it may be an option for you if you only have switches. not sure what colors they have available since i needed white... (1) is the source of power, as you surmised and determined empirically. One of the cables goes to another room and the switch does not affect it. The black from that cable is paired with the black of the cable from the power source and a pigtail from that junction goes to the switch to power it. The other two blacks are one for the fan and one for the light. Since there is just one circuit, the whites can be left spliced together. The blacks for the light and fan each need to be controlled by separate switches. A 2-gang box must be installed instead of the single gang you now have. The existing single gang must be really crowded. It probably exceeds box fill specifications.

The black jumper is the hot jumpering power from one switch to the other and then to some other unswitched device. Connect the timer white to all the other whites. Take the hot black wires off one terminal of the switch and connect them to the black wire of your new timer. Take the wire from the other terminal and connect it to the red wire. Connect the green to the ground.

While the pull chain switch in a damp environment could be an issue here, I really don't know, and would rather leave that to someone more knowledgeable of any specific code that may address this. However, from a strictly utilitarian approach, the switch should be wired in before the receptacle in the enclosure that the plug on the fan unit itself plugs into, and of course on the hot side. Many bath ceiling fan/light enclosures are wired like this (with a plug-in for the fan) but they are then controlled by single, or individual, wall switches. Where is the current pull chain switch that you wish to replace wired into fixture?
