Where did you get your dutch door? I want one soooo bad for our laundry room. I want a mission or shaker style...no raised panels. It will have to be made in a wood that can be stained to match our other doors and trim. So far I haven't been able to find anything like what I want. I will appreciate any information you can give me. And also please post pictures soon!

I am not Klabio, but do have a dutch door. It is my mudroom/laundry area. I had one as I was growing up and knew that it was a must for me. I had my door company take one of our doors and make a dutch door.I am not saying it was inexpensive but I looked for months trying to find the right door. Finally this was a good option as it had the look I wanted and matched our other doors

I found a picture for you of the door before it was installed. It came from TruStile. It took some googling to find a manufacturer. My cousin was building at the same time and also put a Dutch Door in her new house that she got from the lumber yard she was dealing with. Hers was fir. Mine is exterior MDF. Mine is 3/4 inch thick and Trustile uses bolts on the joints of their exterior doors.

My window and door guy who deals with TruStile all the time didn't even know they made it until I told him. There is extra weather stripping required on an exterior door like mine. Since your pantry door is interior you could cut a door like acountryfarm did for her home.

Well, enough jibber-jabber. Here is the photo:

One thing to note is that detail obsession can sometimes go too far. The window on the top leaf is covered with film, but you can see the muntin bars are not shaker style. I tried to match the window part to the windows and the door part to the doors. This was probably a bad idea but I'm stuck with it.

I have one other glass door in the house which goes to the basement. It is a TruStile square stick muntin and it looks much more visually consistent to me.

As I typed this I realized that I could just walk outside and take an installed photo for you. How many unfinished projects can you find in this photo?

Hi, Judy. They aren't really that hard to find, but they also aren't inexpensive. I'm guessing that's going to void the warranty. :-) Also think carefully about your environment and where on the house you want it to go before you decide it's a good choice. I really wanted one, too, but my builder sort of talked me out of it. My climate is pretty severe, winter and summer. And mosquitoes are our state bird. Screens are a must. We opted to maintain a good seal on the exterior with standard doors, and save the Dutch door for the pantry. After all, it doesn't do a lot of good to build a super tight house - and finish it with a door that leaks like a sieve.

This Paint did not drip???? Then they have changed original formulation. We've used this Dutchlac/Hollandlac for 5 years or so (our whole exterior was painted in this). THAT ORIGINAL FORMULA (oil) WOULD DRIP ...UNLESS...painter learns technique required (ie.very little ,spread out) My wife is expert at it... Our exterior house painters COULD NOT DO IT WITH OUT IT DRIPPING. NADA>>>NO WAY>> With that spread out technique it went a long way and was BEST GLOSS AROUND....BUT...last Gallon we used in December did not perform the same,but maybe due to pre primed sub finish...

For some strange reason, ready made dutch doors seem to be very expensive. cutting a hollow core door in half is relatively easy. After you cut it in half, there will not be a frame piece across the cut edge. the hollow will be about 1 to 1 1/8 wide. cut a 2x2 or 2x4 down to fit this exact width. make the length a snug fit between the side frames. You will have to remove some cardboard or foam from the inside of the door to make room. Glue the piece in place and clamp the door skins to it. nail thru the side frames into the new piece. Do not nail thru the door skins. Practice on the top half first then do the bottom. The top edge of the bottom half will show. You need to make the split above where the knob usualy goes. There is an extra block of wood inside at that location to support the knob. It may be a good idea to mount all four hinges with the door intact, and then take it down and split it. This should make everthing line up right when you rehang it. I have done something similar many times when I had to shorten a door more than the width of the bottom frame piece.

^^ Was going to suggest that, I saw it on Ask This Old House a few weeks ago. The door in question had a solid wood piece in the center (it was a 4-panel door I think) that could be cut across to make the two pieces.

I re-read your post and noticed you want to match species with other doors and stain. TruStile can build them in any species you want, not just MDF like I used.

I'm feeling like a regular TruStile cheerleader now. Gimme a T! Gimme an R!
