Cleaning Cast Iron Grates on New Range

I've got a new Whirlpool range with the continuous cast iron grates and caps on it. No where in the instruction booklet does it tell you how to clean them, other then the standard "wipe off spills immediately". I'm talking about those spots you get when something runs over or grease splatters that get on the grates. I know you have to keep cast iron dry to avoid rust. One site actually recommended soaking them overnight in a dishwashing solution?! What!

I've been told not to use the Scotch Brite Green pads on them nor SOS. The guy at the dealer (not really very helpful) thought I could use Bon Ami or Bar Keepers friend and a non-scratch Scotch pad.

Whirlpool wasn't all that helpful either and did mention not to use the Green scotch pads, but that was about it.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
