Pricing on 1/2' low iron shower glass?

Today we got a jaw-dropping quote for a frameless, low iron, factory-applied coating shower enclosure, two-sided with a door attached to the wall (no channels, just clips). This is a standard 3' x 5' shower, but with 82" high sides.

The price works out to over $70 a sq. ft., which seems nuts. Is this reasonable?

What's the total price? Is it a door plus one panel, does it turn a corner, etc. Channels are cheaper than clips.

For some reason, I can't post a comment to your message, so I'm starting another thread. A 1/2" shower door may be very heavy, so consider 3/8" for the door, while keeping the fixed panels 1/2". You really won't notice the difference in depth for the door. I'm speaking from experience.

I ended up getting the Starphire but couldn't get the showerguard. One local company said they "used" to order it but since you can't see it on the glass, they had all sorts of trouble with it being on the wrong side or them installing it backwards? My doors were just installed yesterday and I love the low iron glass! Now I am trying to get one of the glass coatings done-diamonfusion. I think it runs about $150 so it wouldn't have been much more to get the showerguard if it was possible. I guess it all depends on where you live. We could have ordered from about 2 hours away but we were worried that if we had a problem, it would be tough to get them back out!

Starphire is a brand name for Low Iron (PPG now Vitro). The fact that a dealer is going to charge you one price for low iron and another for the same thing but the Starphire brand would make me quite skeptical. As far as whether Low Iron is a benefit, that is a personal opinion, but the tile will definitely pick up the green hue in regular glass over low iron.

Surface protectant is not included in the price. After researching on this forum and elsewhere, I opted for Showerguard in my master bath. It is actually impregnated into the glass and is not a surface substance. So far it is working great as I have no splotches or streaks - I just hose it down when I finish showering to get off any blobs of soap or shampoo. I do use liquid body soap which is supposed to be better at avoiding crap buildup but I have hard water. I knew I was not going to squeegee every time the shower was used so I took precautions. I did not use any kind of protection on the shower in the guest bath as that shower is never used. Prior to the remodel, it had frosted glass and I used it as an additional storage closet for Costco size packages of toilet paper and paper towels along with anything else I could reasonably fit in there :-). It now has clear frameless glass enclosure and beautiful tile work so it is no longer operating as a storage facility :-).

Total price over $7500, straight corner, door plus two shorter panels (door is on 5' side and attached to wall). Classic L-shaped installation. Invoice doesn't even specify door size, so I suspect it is standard 28", but I will ask.

Hate quotes without decent breakdowns, so I'm unhappy already.

I don't think DH is up for DIYing this. It's part of a whole house remodel and addition, so we're overwhelmed with projects and need to get this bath done.

How much do clips cost?

Also, we have hard water and calacatta tile in the shower, so both low iron and good coating are a must, even though I know they are adding some to the cost. Still, 1/2" Starphire for fish tanks sells for $15 a square!

Have you gotten more than one bid? That seems extremely high to me. When I got bids, one was twice as much as the other two.

sounds high to me too. get another bid or 2! also, decreasing your glass to 3/8" will bring down your cost... also, i know when we were getting measured for glass our glass shop said there was almost no difference in price between ~ 74-76" ht vs 84", which is the ht we got...
