Shark mop rises electric bill?

Well, i just received my precious shark mop and it really is great!! Thanks Ree, errett, and all for the good advice you have been giving us. I tried it and loved it. Even my DH is amazed, but here comes DH's little question...How will it affect the electric bill??? He says it is like an iron. Can anybody add about this? have you seen an increase because of our great cleaninig helper?

It was an ease to use it. just straight forward! I was a little aprehensive because uf the resistance it could provide while pushing, but let me tell you is almost none. I am completely in love...no mater electric bill..I will let DH deal with that!!!

The cost to operate an appliance is:

Power in watts X Time in hrs. X Price per KWH, then divide by 1000.

Steam mops probably use about 1500 watts. So if you mop 1 hour a day for 100 days a year,the hours used would be 100. Assuming a cost of 10 cents per Kilowatt Hour.

1500 X 100 X $.10 = 15,000.00

Then divide 15,000 by 1000 = $15 per year

Thanks jobird! I will probably use it more that 100 hours at least at the beggining. It is my new toy and I cannot take my hands of it! My floors are terrazzo and it was smilling back to me when I started using the mop yesterday.
Now my daughter in law wants one!! And she knows she'll get it.

I am reading all these posts with interest as I have now received my first electric bill for a FULL month with my new system. I put in a Carrier standard blower 13 SEER 2 1/2 ton heat pump/AC system with Puron. It replaced a 20-year-old Trane heat pump/AC. It is certainly not an awful electric bill but I was hoping to see a little bit of savings: Oct 07 with 31 days, I used 612 KwH, and avg. temp was 71. In Oct. 06, also 31 days, I used 703 kwh but the average temperature was much cooler: 64. Since I probably used some heat a year ago and I have been using AC this month , I figure these are probably pretty comparable months. My bill is: $88.42. For the year-ago period: $83.37. The price per kwh now is: 10.86 cents per kwh; a year ago, it was 11.03 cents (this was back when we were getting that "reduction" from the enormously high bills, as those of you in Md. will recall). I work from home and so tho I have a programmable thermostat, I never use that function, just adjust. I keep the house as 76 (75 if it is truly awful out) in the summer and in the winter, 72 (again, the truly bitter cold will get me to aim for 73 or 74). I turn the AC off at night most nights and just use a ceiling fan; it is often off during the day as well since I work in the (almost always cool) basement. Nothing else has changed "electrically" here; my hot water, refrigerator, and other power uses are unchanged, nothing is broken, etc. Obviously, I did not purchase "high efficiency" system but I assumed all NEW systems are more efficient and hopefully a little less expensive to run. I guess this was a wrong assumption.

ilene is right about city codes and grey water and black water use. I use water from rain barrels for the vegetable garden, never grey water. Laundry rinse water (unless you ply it with softeners, and even vinegar can cause an acidic condition to your soil) is a low-risk grey water source. Water from dishes is high-risk. You're also supposed to keep grey water within your property bounderies. Grey water should only be stored for 24-hours or less, due to microbes. You should also filter your grey water to reduce solids. Reduce health risks- Suggestions include: -DonÂt use grey water on vegetable gardens. -DonÂt use grey water if any member of your family is suffering from gastroenteritis. -DonÂt irrigate your garden with grey water in wet weather, or if the soil is already sodden. -DonÂt allow grey water to form pools or ponds in your garden. Not sure if I am reading it correctly? Did you say he set it up so the heat pump shuts off when the emergency strip heat is on? I have done tons of research as I am replacing my system. In the "old" days people didn't think a heat pump could produce heat below 20-30 degrees. The modern heat pumps can produce heat in very cold temps. They won't be able to heat your house completely if it is below zero however it will still provide some heat and help out. With a new system I don't think you should ever shut your heat pump off unless it is physically not working for some reason. I know when I first moved into my current house a tech told me to shut my heat pump off because temps were close to 15 below zero. When I got up the next morning it was only 59 degrees in my house with the stat set at 65 degrees. (my strip heat is undersized). I turned the heat pump back on and it was back up to temp in a couple hours. It will produce some BTU's at those temps.

live_wire_oak: I agree that remodeling a bathroom is a complex job and I am approaching it with caution. I have learned a lot from my unfortunate experience. Some of my lessons learned: Insist that the architect include an electrical and lighting plan in the specs, even if he/she claims it's unnecessary Ask each contractor to provide, in writing, names and license numbers of all subs they plan to use on the job. (My crooked GC "discovered" part-way through the project that his favorite plumber had allowed his license to expire several years earlier, and added him as an "employee" retroactively.) I am glad you are enjoying your mop!!! honestly, I never noticed a difference in my electric bill and I have had a steam mop for years.. In my book, it doesn't cost any more than turning on a lamp. There is no way this mop will cost 1,500.00 a year..so don't worry..and just enjoy the ease of cleaning your floors!

Jobird is correct, but here is an easier way to figure it.

A 1500 watt machine uses 1.5 Kilowatts per hour. A kilowatt hour of electricity costs about 10 cents. So it would cost 15 cents per hour to use the mop.

With Jobird's scenario, that comes out to $15 for 100 hours.

In my area, the price of electricity is 10.86 cents per kilowatt hour, so the cost would be 16.29 cents per hour or $16.29 for 100 hours.

It's a good idea to take your electric bills for a few months and see what your actual electric costs are. Just don't be fooled by the "per KWh" rate they have on the bill. You'll need to calculate it. You take your total electric bill, including all taxes, fees, discounts, etc and divide by the total number of KWh used. You should not include any credit from payments or refunds that were applied though.

For instance, my total electric bill this month is $40.66 and I used 330 KWh. $40.66 divided by 330 equals 12.32Â¢ per KWh on this bill. When I used to monitor it, my bills ran about 14Â¢/KWH so I was a little, although pleasantly surprised when I saw the decrease. So for me to operate a 1500 watt appliance costs about 18.5Â¢ per hour. So if used the estimate above, my bill would go up $1.55 per month. With my bills, I'd probably notice it, especially in the spring and fall, but during the hottest summer and coldest winter I probably wouldn't notice it. But I'd still be aware of it since I'm pretty aware of energy useage. For someone who has an electric bill running hundreds of dollars, you'd never notice it.

Also when you're computing appliance costs, remember not all appliances will be running full power all the time. Presumably the steam mop would be, but for instance something with a thermostat like an oven will turn the power on and off as needed to maintain. Just a tidbit of info for you if you're interested.

The problem is measuring watts and multiplying by the price for a kilowatt. Theya re not equal!!
