cleaning white ceiling fans

Please help! I have a white ceiling fan in the greater kitchen area, in the cathedral ceiling. The height is one huge challenge in cleaning, which I can obviously address with a very tall ladder. (it is next to my staircase, but just out of reach.) The blade edges are a lovely black. I tried cleaning it a couple years ago, using one of those contraptions with the stiff bristles, that supposedly slide over each blade. Well, apparently grease is also trapped on the blades, since the duster thing didn't work. I then sprayed some 409 on it, which only smeared the mess. Any easy solutions? It just looks terrible.
