I have gone your route weeks ago and made the round of finding a nice fake marble tile . You can look at my threads if you are still considering a fake marble tile . There were many options suggested by a lot of members on this web . If not than I think with your white walls and cabinets the only solid color that you can have on the floor is grey . I personally didn't like grey and went with the real marble . There will always be a difference between the real and the fake . You can see the difference on my threads too with the choices that I had and the real marble end result. Good luck.

ALthough I'll agree with most of that post, there are a couple of things I don't. First, there IS a big difference between the "high dollar" sealers and Home Depot's Best (Tile Lab). The better sealers will last alot longer. Same thing with the difference between water based and solvent based. The solvent based sealers penetrate much deeper, and as such, last alot longer. One last question-- who makes an unsanded epoxy? Lastly, I don't know what you're calling "tile sealers". The only tile sealers I've ever seen ARE penetrating sealers, also used for sealing stone, and in fact ORIGINALLY meant for sealing stone.

Here in Detroit, the subway tiles were mostly used in the basement laundry or secondary basement kitchen areas or other areas where servants worked. Our 1920s and 1930s bathrooms were done in beautiful 6 x 6 tiles in pottery-style glazes. These are the kind of glazes where there is variation tile-to-tile, so that there is a feeling of texture to the walls. The walls were usually tiled to the ceilings in the kitchens and in most of the bathrooms. Very pale yellow, peach, greens, blues, some tans are found. I believe that our long period of low housing values was a savior to our Detroit ceramic tile in older homes. No one would remodel a house that was not worth much, so we still have house after house with original tile and plumbing. We have an art pottery works called Pewabic here and some sun rooms have floors and fountains done in their distinctive darker Craftsman colors. There is a series of websites for each big city in the US called "Curbed [city name]" and Curbed Detroit shows these old homes and mini mansions and real mansions when they come up for sale. If you like old homes, check and see if you have a "Curbed" site for your city and subscribe. I have learned so much about old houses and the renewal of Detroit reading that website.

I am in the process of building a master suite with white subway tiles and "marble" hexagon floors. My top is a solid surface carrara color. I choose a light grey vanity that picks up the grey in the marble veining, and I painted the walls BM Hale Navy. Pictures don't do it justice. It's glorious. (Don't mind the dirty walls. It's a construction zone. lol)
