Long Crevasse Tool for Vacuum Cleaner

Anyone know where I can purchase a long crevasse tool for my home vacuum (1.25" hose) cleaner? I'd like one about three feet long, but even two feet long would be helpful.

The intended purpuse is to get into deep narrow places, for example my heatpump has a 30" deep pair of air filters. The opening is a little over 1" wide, but not 1.25" or I could run the standard floor extension on home vacuum cleaner back into the slot.

I have a Dyson. It's a great vacuum, and emptying it is no bother. I wash the filter once every six months (I don't think it's actually dirty though - but the instructions say to do it). Since I also have several Miele's, I can compare bag to bagless. Bagless allows me to get rid of the dirt after each use. Bag cleaners do not. I don't like 'storing' my dirt in the closet - so bagless is the way to go for pet hair problems. I understand the differences between Dyson cleaners and other bagless vacs. The way it works is different. Apparently, spinning the air at high speeds throws the dust out of the air stream through the cleaner. Other bagless vacs have a filter in the middle of the dirt bucket, like my Shop Vac, that clogs immediately with dust, and is a filthy mess to empty. If you get a bagless, get a Dyson. That said, the Miele is very quiet. But the bag does start to stink after holding dirt for a while, the dirt itself just deteriorates inside there. And there's food particles and God knows what else in there, all sitting in the warm, dark closet until we take out the machine next week and blow air through the bag. That's why bag vacs smell so bad. If you changed the bag every time that you vacuum, no smell. Hence the reason I like my Dyson so very much. By the way, Dyson makes canister vacs too. With an excellent bare floor tool and a power brush for your carpets, and a turbo brush for your stairs. Easy to empty. DC23 is the model number.

Well, this is my SAD saga regarding vacuum cleaners! I was married 50 years when my husband passed away last summer, so I have seen A LOT of vacuum cleaners! The one I remember very well is a Sears canister over 20 years ago that cost me at that time about $400.00. It was nothing but trouble. So bad, in fact, that it went in the trash. My Mom also purchased one and so did my best friend. Both of those shortly went in the trash, also. Then came the Hoover Dimension 1000 canister vacuum. I brought it with me in 1988 when we moved to a new location, where we still are now. And the Dimension 1000 still runs! That's nearly 30 years! But the hose desperately needs replacement (as the wiring runs through it to run the power head) but I doubt I can still get the parts. I should have replaced it at the time, when it cost $100.00, but I had no idea how these vacuums were going to go downhill. I have it all taped up with electrical tape, but I'm afraid to use it. So it's sitting in the basement. I still have an older Hoover Windtunnel upright with the "Dirt Finder" that actually works! The entire vacuum works well but it's extremely heavy to push. I found that with the newer ones, the "Dirt Finder" doesn't work--I was actually told that in a Hoover store--and the rest of the machine doesn't work, either. Again, I was told in a vacuum store that the newer Hoovers are no good. Well, that vacuum was sold in my last garage sale for $5.00 and I was glad to be rid of it. Now, to the present time...I purchased a Dyson DC 41 for $600.00 about three years ago and it just quit on me. I hemmed and hawed about what I should get to replace it and I wish I had seen this forum before making a purchase. Believe it or not, I bought another DC 41 because WHEN it worked, it was great! Fortunately, since it now is an older model, it was somewhat less expensive. Now I'm hoping I will have better luck with this one. I also decided it was time to replace my heavy, aging Hoover Windtunnel, and I purchased a Shark Rotator Powered Lift Away (the pet model) for upstairs because I love the ease in which I can get under the bed. This set me back about $350.00, which I didn't think was bad, because I LOVE this vacuum. And I have 7 cats in the house (yes, seven) so I'm glad I got the pet models in both. But I have it less than a month, so only time will tell. Had I seen this forum, I would have looked into the Tacony products, a Simplicity or Riccar. After all, I spent enough money that I could have considered one of those. And there is a vacuum store right up the road from me.

Bissell PROlite Multi-Cyclonic Upright Vacuum, Bagless, 17G5 Love it, we have hardwood, tile and carpet and it cleans all surfaces and has brush switch at the handle. Bought it on Amazon - with free shipment it was $50 saving on the price compared to Target or Lowes. The only thing -it is a bit heavy but still best so far. Here is my review posted on Amazon, you can read others on Amazon. "came quickly, time to take out of the box and set up - 5 minutes with one screw driver. Suction is amazing, I can't believe how much dirt and dust it got in first 10 seconds. Yes it pulls on your carpet especially when you are working at the edges. It is a bit heavy and takes a bit of effort for me to move it around, so that is the heaviest I will ever buy. I have hardwood floor and carpet in bedroom, and I followed with dust whiper on hardwood floor -- almost no dust to speak off. I will not get under your couch without attachments - too thick front body. Still, I like it for the price and quick clean up. Have not tried the attachments yet."

WIshiwereintheup, I am still using the bare floor tool, extension hose and other extension tools from my first vacuum -- a Hoover bought about 45 years ago. It came with them -- in those days few upright vacs were designed with a hose that comes off for tool use; the extension had to be plugged into the unit when I wanted to use it. I've jerry rigged various adapters to allow them to be used with later vacuums. They are perfectly good; the bare floor accessory and extra length hose for my current vacuum was ridiculously expensive. I don't remember what happened to that Hoover. I think maybe when my DH used it to vacuum the garage without a bag in it (I clearly remember that!), that ruined it, but not sure. It would have been about 20 years old then and still a good vac.

Thanks, there seem to be some possibilities. I guess its time for me to become more aquainted with e-bay. I have never used it and I don't participate in the palbucks or whatever it is called, so I'm not sure how to pay, and I didn't look up the information no the web site. I may do that next.

You're welcome Jerry. And anymore these days, you can find everything including the kitchen sink on ebay (years ago it used to be a more "true" auction, now it's that plus an internet pitstop for wholesalers, retailers, etc.)

A note about PayPal. Ebay bought out PPal a few years ago and I don't hear so many complaints, prior to that, there were anti PayPal websites everywhere. The way it works is you go to PayPal and register with a credit card (I use a credit card that I keep a low limit on, under $1,000, strictlty for internet use. That way if it's ever stolen or hacked, they won't get too far with it ). When you win an auction or use "buy it now" feature, you can log into PayPal and the screens will walk you through the steps of sending $ to the seller. The charge then shows up on your credit card. Others might disagree with this next part: PayPal has what they call "Verified" buyers and sellers. Those are the ones who have provided them with bank account info. Never in a million years am I giving them my bank account info (I had a friend who had so many problems, too many funds taken out of her bank acct, not enough funds put in, I just won't risk it.) So you can still use paypal and only use a credit card. Don't let all the hype about being a 'verified' member convince you to hand over your banking info. You can still buy and sell perfectly well on ebay with PayPal and just registering with a credit card.

If you scroll down a bit, under "General Discussion Boards" you'll see "New to Ebay". You can read and learn a lot from those posts, or register and ask away!

Oh, and a critical P.S. Whatever you do, always check the sellers Feedback (you can read it by clicking the number to the right of their user name). If they have more than 1 or 2 Negatives, be very wary. There are plenty of sellers who have 100% positive feedback and those are by far the ones best to deal with!

Thanks for the turorial on e-bay, it says a lot in a few words. I made a keep-copy to read again next time I think "e-bay".

I like the idea too of having a low credit-limit credit card. I get many offers for credit cards in the mail and shred them all, given they all have my name and address pre-printed on the application. I'll give some more thought on taking a low credit-limt card from one of my favoriates, maybe Continental Airlines.
