It's That Time Again...The Ultimate Garage Sale!

I'm off again tomorrow for Upstate NY for

the Annual 'Ultimate Garage Sale'.

For those who weren't here last year...It's a

Garage Sale with Several Hundred 'GS' folks selling in

One Place!!

They do this twice a year and in the past, I've found some great bargains.

The Weather is going to be

perfect for doing my favorite thing.

Wish ALL of you could be with me...sooo

I'll try and take some pics again to share the experience.

I'm SOOOO jealous! Yard sales are petering out here and I'm starting on withdrawl already.

Well now, I'll comment on the witch's name first, Sally huh, sometimes I do look like that, just ask my Ex! At least she's smiling. Next, Cait, I have been wondering just what the heck you have been up to cause we haven't heard from you in so long. I thought maybe you were totally engrossed in your Lady Gardyn and all I could figure was you were out in the "back 40" moving pillars around like it was Easter Island, you know, lining them up with the Sun, the Moon and the Stars! LOL. So how is that Gardyn going, can you share any pics with us just yet or are you keeping that for a surprise? And please do tell, now that's it is early Spring up North here, is it turning to Fall where you are? I'm curious. That mosaic garden is awesome. I could only dream of having a place like that. Great stuff for only $14 Sooner. I find great stuff at the Thrift Town thrift stores here around Fort Worth. There are three of them that I like to go to, Richland Hills, Fort Worth and Arlington. I still shop GW and SA because every now and then I find something really cool at a good price. But I hardly ever get to garage sales, except this weekend - I held one - had a ball, glad it's over. Shopping at them is sure a lot more fun than having one. I LOVE metal stuff-can't wait to see what you do with your new...uh, thing. Cheryl

Been checking back in on this thread with interest and hope the original poster lets us know how it might all be resolved. I have a few random thoughts that I hope doesn't put me in the grinch category: 1. Even though the mother is housed comfortably elsewhere and not in need of funds, the possessions left behind are still, in effect, hers. If she wishes that someone benefit from the sale of the things left behind, that "someone" is the person who should be doing the lion's share of the work to dispose of them in a meaningful way. If the OP is the one expected to take care of things, she should have carte blanch to handle it how she sees fit - possibly not taking the niece or brother into account. 2. Again, read up on the possible IRS pitfalls of going over the $500 non-cash donation threshhold. 3. How much time does one wish to spend going through and pricing things right down to the last Flintstone jelly glass everyone seems to have in the far reaches of kitchen cabinets? How much is that beloved family dish really worth to someone not in your family? 4. What charity is going to send a truck to pick up everything that doesn't sell? How many trips do you want to make to the dump or how many months of storage fees at a U Rent It place would you agree to? How much time do you want to devote dragging things back and forth to flea markets? 5. You need a few people to help with garage sales - someone to watch the cash box, and one or two more to see that items don't simply walk away while you're distracted. I'm not heartless when it comes to the disposal of other's things; but I've never had to do it while the owner was still living so that sense of "violation" never came into play. But since the responsibility of having to do these things fell to me and my brother on a couple of occasions, doing what was easiest and most expedient for us was the most basic consideration.

I love going to garage sales. Here's my take on it. Some people have garage sales where they are selling about $15 total worth of stuff. My sister who comes with me sometimes always marvels at these sales. She can't fathom why anyone would sit in their garage all day for that bit of money. My answer is, well, because they enjoy it! There are people who really don't have a lot to do and enjoy sitting there, striking up conversations with customers, etc. For them, a low $ garage sale isn't so much about the $, it's about the activity itself. The $$ are just a bonus. So... in your case, I'd say donate. I love going TO garage sales, but in my life I've had only about two of them, both times selling large items (furniture and such), thus making it worth my while. You kind of have to use dd50's logic. Estimate how much you will make vs how many hours you'll be sitting there and come up with an amount per hour. Then figure if your time is worth that or not. If not, skip it and donate.

On second thought, is the cat REAL, Karen?! I have a little stinker who has learned that she can get immediate attention if she jumps onto the back door screen and hangs there! ugh! Luckily she's more important to me than the screen which can be replaced. :)

Yes, the cat is real. There's a site with hysterical cat photos on it, new ones daily, and the captions added to the pictures keep me in stitches.

Hi Everyone..
Got back late this afternoon and I'm so 'pooped'!
The size this time was larger than last, with so much to see.

Karen I LOVE that cat picture ... It says it all with 'No Words'...
PM... I don't know where you are in upstate NY, but the Sale was on the Stormville Airport grounds - in Stormville, NY. Are you anywhere near there?
They hold Flea Markets there (also huge), several times a year... and are also somthing to go to. My family and I have been doing that since it bagan...waaaaay back in the '70s.

Magpie...Luvs...Candy....I'm going to post pictures later on a new thread...right now DH is preparing home made Pizza...and I've got to help out...like set the table!! lol
