Should I move the closet door?

We will be starting to build our new home in the next few weeks, however, there is still time to make a few tweaks.

This bathroom will be shared by my two boys. It is 8ft x 8ft. Currently, the linen closet door opens inside the bathroom. Do you think it would be better if I moved the door to the outside where the red line is?

Another option is to move the tub next to the toilet and put the vanity where the tub is.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

We have the exact same layout in our son's/guest bathroom that is (still) being renovated. Our linen closet previously opened from the hallway but we moved it a couple of feet and reoriented it to steal some space during our adjacent masterbath reno, Now it opens from the guest bathroom and, at 24" deep, opening to the hallway was no longer an option. I think it's going to function very well for us, although I do think that I'll be storing extra pillows and comforters elsewhere. We'll have a highly efficient vent fan and have a louvered door on the closet because I didn't want to have to be concerned about any dampness in the closet. I don't foresee a problem with the doors swinging into one another because it's easy enough to close the hallway door to fully open the closet door.

I like your layout as shown and would not consider switching the tub and vanity. Putting the tub right inside the door would make the room feel more closed off than looking in to a vanity with mirror)s) above. Placement of the tub/shower as you have it allows for a standard alcove tub.

I just wanted to add that, in your situation, it's really about how you feel you'd use the linen closet and which access makes the most sense for you. If you have sufficient storage in your masterbath that you won't need to utilize this storage regularly, then I wouldn't be concerned about it opening into your sons' bathroom. If it is your only linen storage, I might be more inclined to open it to your hallway.

On of the deciding factors in choosing the specific model we chose when shopping for a new home was whether it had a laundry on the second floor (where the bedrooms are). The superior layout of our model along with the laundry made the decision. The only home we like better had the laundry in the basement and that was its death-mark. If you're doing hockey equipment it makes total sense to have an additional machine. That idea seems like the perfect Male solution as well, so I'm surprised your husband didn't agree. The laundered items ideally should stay on the same plane they're used in. So that means clothes near the bedrooms and sports stuff on the main floor so you don't have to cart them up or down. Makes perfect sense to me. And if you're happy with the performance of a top loader, you can get another cheap one for downstairs or move the one you have now and get a nicer front loader for upstairs with higher speed spin and some other bells and whistles like delayed start. That looks like a William Poole plan. If so, you can check out similar plans to see how they are done. He often uses that detail of a big fixed window between two doors, which doesn't always work. BTW, in general a wood burning fireplace draws better if the flue is relatively warm, and where it's at least two feet higher than the highest point of the roof. But in this case you are limited because of the balcony. If you can cut that back, you have more options. You could also put a smaller woodstove up against the kitchen sink wall, and eliminate the extra great room doors. That gives the bedroom more space. The entertainment bookcase is almost obsolete anyway, given flat screen tvs.

Lily (BTW, that is my cat's name!) The entry to the bedroom is to the right of the cat room. When you are walking past the cat room, you take a right and pass by the opening of the cat room, and then by the bathroom entry on the left and the closet entry on the right, then you keep going until you get to the bedroom. I don’t have a door on the closet because I will be able to see a pretty view through a big window in the opposite bathroom. The closet its huge so I don’t technically need more space, but having a 6 ft wall with just a mirror on it seemed wasteful to me. Yes, the negative would be if I found a great sculpture and it’s bigger than I could fit in the niche!! Other than that, if the casing of the foyer is okay to create the ‘wall/border’ of the niche, then that is great! I love your idea about forming a casing on both sides of the sculpture to really put a frame around it. Hopefully I’ll find something before the house is built! Because I have the space, I AM going to get one of those 3 way mirrors :) I was going to do one of two things. One option is to have 3 mirrors on entire wall opposite the cat room and the niche, and the two outer mirrors would adjust when I wanted the 3-way function. And yes, I was hoping for storage behind all 3 mirrors but it works even if I don't add storage (the mirrors would be the cabinet doors). If I didn’t care about the niche, I could have full hanging space behind the mirrors too. OR, I saw this photo and was wondering if this is a good option if I don’t add more space to the closet. I could keep a little storage behind the two outer sides that project, and the center mirror would be flat against the wall. Then you adjust the side mirrors when needed. The negative is the two side mirrors (the wings) would be a little bit in the way of accessing the hanging clothes on either side. I imagine I don't have space for the shelves on the sides so the side mirrors may look odd just hanging out there.

Definitely not pink or purple, unfortunately that would be a deal breaker for some people. Grand Canal seems to work with the siding, but I don't really like it. Really Teal is not quite right. I like the teal that you posted, similar to the Dartsmouth Green, would like to see that mock up. If you can't decide on a teal (or blue) quickly, go with black. Black sounds boring, but it isn't always. With your stone and house style I think it will make a statement.

Treasuretheday: Thank you so much for your insight. There are actually several other linen closets upstairs so storage isn't a huge concern. I plan on putting towels and extra shampoo/soap in the bathroom closet. I was just more concerned that the door swing would be cumbersome. Thank you for the suggestion of putting in louvered doors.

Remember that you don't need or want an especially deep linen closet. You'll want it oriented the way the gives you the larger opening and shallower closet, imo.
